I respect the anti-Yankee bias, but Eovaldi is at least as much of a health risk as Paxton. Don't get me wrong, I like the Eovaldi signing. But the Paxton trade was a good move by Cashman.

Amounts that sit above the $40 M tier will be taxed at 75% to us in 2019. 206 million is the threshold. 206 million to 226 million will be taxed at 30%. 226 million to 246 million will be taxed at 42% (30+12) Over 246 million will be taxed at 75% (30+45) You're doubling up the 12%. The highest rate we can pay in 2019 is 75%. For a third-time offender the highest rate is 95% (50+45)

Players deserve some protection too, though. They have short careers. The only guys that get the ridiculously long contracts are the megastars, and that's because owners and fans alike want the big talent on their team and will outbid the other ones that want the same big talent on their team.

12% is the surtax if you exceed the cap by 20 to 40 million. I don't think this is right. As harmony said, FanGraphs estimate of the value of one fWAR when Cano signed was more like $7 mill. They adjust it every year but they don't make any retroactive adjustments. If there is an escalation in salaries, it does make long term deals look a little better, rightfully so.

The Castillo situation is so bizarre. The Sox can't let him even play one game for the big team without it costing them millions in tax. So instead they have to keep paying him about 11 mill a year to play in Pawtucket until the end of 2020.

Who knows. Larry was an integral part of the front office from 2002 until his departure and he probably made more good moves than bad. He brought Theo Epstein aboard. He helped engineer the Dodgers trade. Bottom line is, Sox fans should be happy the way everything has played out since 2002. There's been some weird stuff and blunders and all that, but the overall record has been fantastic.

I would expect Larry was the driving force behind Pablo. But if he was the driving force behind both, Ben was in such a weak position that honestly he should have quit.

I think that would vary from player to player. My sense was that Jon Lester did not appreciate being traded. But he seemed to give the Sox a legitimate chance to re-sign him. Theo 'overpaid' by 20 million to sign him.

I've seen a lot of those baseball documentaries. The one about the 1941 season is a classic. DiMaggio's 56 game streak and Ted Williams's .406 season. The clips of Williams when he was The Kid are amazing.

Personally I think it says a lot that Ben has not taken another job as GM. It's been over 3 years now. My belief is that he prefers a lower profile position. He strikes me as a pretty low key guy.
