  1. I think dgalehouse is correct that there is correlation. How strong the correlation is I would like to see as well.
  2. I'll just copy Kimmi's post from yesterday, including her editorial comments at the end: Baseball Prospectus ranks catchers defensively by framing runs, fielding runs, blocking runs, caught stealing runs, stealing runs, and throwing runs. Out of 117 ranked catchers in 2018, Leon ranked 7th and Vazquez ranked 14th. Swihart ranked 38th, which is not bad out of 117. As a team, Boston catchers ranked 3rd out of the 30 teams. Those are based on the measurable stats. I think Leon and Vazquez would rank even better when you factor in the intangibles.
  3. I've mentioned this before about Kimbrel, but I will mention it again. His WHIP with Boston is almost identical to his WHIP with Atlanta, but his ERA is higher. The simple reason appears to be more long balls.
  4. Plus it's a whole different deal with starters where you're facing hitters more than once and strategizing based on the previous at-bat etc.
  5. I think it's a combination of factors. It's pretty clear that some teams are just withholding spending because of the advantageous of tanking. It's becoming a complete mess.
  6. ******** right back at you. First of all, if you're actually reading the posts, a number of Sox fans are unhappy with the signing. Secondly, if it was the Yankees who signed him there would be a split on that as well.
  7. If the sample size is big enough, the luck will even out to some degree. That guy who only comes in for one batter will also get charged with runs sometimes even though only giving up one baserunner and then departing. But overall I think WHIP, OPSa and K/BB are more important for relievers.
  8. Only for a few more hours.
  9. We haven't dropped much. We've lost Kimbrel and Kelly, that's it. We've added 4 months each of Eovaldi and Pearce. Our bullpen is a question mark, I'll readily admit that. But that's the only issue.
  10. It's kind of a different deal. The sanctions levied on Rose were severe, but they occurred long after his playing career was over. What we're talking about here is being denied the right to play the game any more.
  11. I have such mixed feelings on this one. The guy was an idiot and probably deserves not to play again. Then again, he's still a young man, and hopefully he's genuinely sorry. Is the world a better place by giving him one more chance, or by denying him that one more chance? In real life, sad it is to say, people can kill other people and not get life sentences.
  12. It's like the song says: Mamas don't let your babies grow up to be catchers Don't let 'em wear headgear or squat in the dust Let 'em be shortstops, left fielders and such
  13. Catchers can't hit. It's a scientific fact. All that crouching down kills them. In 2018 the average MLB catcher hit 233/304/374 for an OPS of 678.
  14. Sale's numbers with Leon are crazy good compared to other catchers. Do you think Leon should get some credit for this or not?
  15. Closers do get a bit of a rough ride from fans. Maybe that's why they think they should be paid more LOL Who is the best-loved closer in Red Sox history? It's Koji, of course. There may not be any other contenders. Foulke, Papelbon, Kimbrel all fell out of favor with a lot of fans for performance regression.
  16. Right, but you also said we got 'zilch' from our catchers last year, implying zero value on either offense or defense.
  17. The arguments against re-signing him are that he'll be too expensive and that he appears to be in decline. If anyone says he wouldn't help this team, that would be wrong of course.
  18. You are a firm non-believer in CERA stuff?
  19. Yes, kindness should always be a prominent consideration in MLB personnel moves!
  20. Ah, I just like to mess around a bit cp. I think you do too.
  21. So basically what you're saying is that nobody wants any of the guys on our team, because we haven't traded them yet. Our players must all suck then.
  22. Dombrowski has no idea what he's doing, 119 wins and ring aside.
  23. moon has already explained why he thinks they're valuable a zillion times. You just can't be bothered reading or trying to understand anything anyone else says.
  24. You just like saying Carter Capps.
