  1. $10 mill is a lot of money, sure. But it's still a pittance compared to what it will cost to retain Mookie.
  2. I agree with all that.
  3. A little better positioned, and that's all. The tax savings of re-setting are a drop in the bucket compared to Mookie Betts's next contract.
  4. Henry replaced Ben with DD and Henry knew DD's MO. Those are simple facts.
  5. The Red Sox can easily re-sign Betts after 2020-if they're willing to be the top bidder.
  6. But when JH hired DD the mandate was obvious. JH was unhappy about finishing last back-to-back and worried about missing the playoffs again in Papi's final season. We had a poor pitching staff and nothing ready in the minors. We had lots of prospects. JH knew exactly what was about to happen.
  7. Hey, I enjoy a pointless neverending argument as much as the next guy...
  8. But let's not forget that there are plenty of ways for poor first basemen to f*** up other than not being good scoopers.
  9. The current state of the farm can be blamed on JH and Ben as much as on DD. Ben blew it in 2014 and 2015 and as a result, JH hired DD to do exactly what he did.
  10. Castillo might not matter to Luxury Tax Budgies, but I'm sure he matters to John Henry and the team accountants. The bottom line is, the vast majority of Mookie's contract will fall in the years after Price, Eovaldi and Pedroia are gone.
  11. I suppose Red Sox fans are less outraged about 2017 because we lost 3 out of 4, whereas the Yanks and Dodgers each lost in 7 games. Plus we only scored 2 runs in each of those losses in Houston.
  12. It's ludicrous to blame DD if we don't keep Betts. It's not DD's fault that Mookie turned up his nose at a $200 million extension offer because he has his heart set on something more astronomical like $350 million. It's not DD'd fault that Mookie is the second best player in the game and is all about the money. Also, after the 2020 season the team's albatross count will not be that bad. Price and Eovaldi will each have 2 years left. Pedroia will have 1. Castillo will be off the books. They will definitely be able to break the bank for Mookie - if that's what they want to do.
  13. You may have a point there.
  14. I mostly agree, Kimmi. But I do think pleasing the fans is a kind of necessary evil of doing business sometimes. After all, they are the ones who pump all the money into the team's coffers that allows the team to pay the salaries of the players.
  15. The other problem was letting Fisk just walk away for nothing, by sheer incompetence. There weren't many good moves in that time period.
  16. https://nypost.com/2019/11/18/world-series-video-shows-possible-astros-cheating-setup/
  17. So in the 2017 World Series video, there's a clip of Astro players coming off the field after a win in Houston, and the clip shows what clearly appears to be the cheating 'work station' just off the dugout in the area leading to the locker room, with a desk, monitor, trash can, the works. You can't make this stuff up.
  18. I'm not exonerating DD for Sale, Price and Eovaldi. I'm just saying that JH could clearly see what was coming with Mookie and our payroll situation. Now it's up to him to make the call one way or the other and whether the price for Mookie is too high or not. And in my opinion that decision is not affected by the money on the books for SPE. It's a bigger and longer-lasting decision than that. It's a decision that could be felt for a decade.
  19. You can pin it on DD if you want, but Henry hired DD, approved all those deals and knew this was coming with Mookie. So I'm sticking with JH as the man to point the finger at.
  20. Do you see an opt-out in there Swami?
  21. Ben was GM for 4 drafts wasn't he?
  22. I think if we lose Mookie, it won't be because of DD. It will be because his asking price is deemed too high by JH & Bloom, or because he wants to play elsewhere.
  23. Agreed. What I'm really saying there is 'Thanks Dave!'
  24. It might also be noted that we had zero depth in the outfield, as was painfully highlighted by the recurring sight of Gorkys in the lineup.
  25. I'm including Henry. He makes his money off the fans, and this will be palatable to most fans.
