The fact is that to obtain a pitcher of Cole's caliber on the free agent market, that was what you had to do. Reportedly the Angels and Dodgers were willing to go 8 years at the same rate and drew the line there. The Yanks went to 9 to win the auction. We're lucky in a sense that the Angels and Dodgers were there to push the Yanks to this level. If I was a Yankee fan I'd be very happy to have Cole, while also very aware that at some point this will be an albatross. It's just the way it works.

The bottom line on Perez is that the deep analytics show he pitched better than his ERA last year, and $6 mill is a reasonable price. It's exactly the type of signing Bloom should have been expected to make.

Updated tax numbers per Cot's and Spotrac. The big difference is in the projected cost for minimum wage major league contracts. Spotrac's number is for 20 players @ 585,000. Cot's is only for 10 players @ 575,000. But Spotrac also projects a higher number for minor league players. It's all a bit baffling, even to a budgie. He said that in reference to the idea of including any prospects to facilitate a trade of Price. My take is that they want to accomplish the payroll cutting without losing prospects in the process. That doesn't equate to a tear down.

They have to trade JBJ and Price, at minimum.
