    Food for thought: Over the last few years, the Red Sox have sustained a payroll that is roughly 80% of the Yankees payroll while reportedly perceiving around half the revenue. The 10 million wouldn't affect their bottom line, but the short-sighted part of this argument, is that most of the impact from the LT abuse will not be felt now, but later on. That is, of course, assuming they're still under the lux tax. If they're over it, then this is just retarded.

They have a battalion of dregs assembled. Some of them have to pan out. Also, we do have a SS, his name is Mike Aviles. He may not be the optimal SS, but neither was Scutaro.

    I disagree with this, on principle. The luxury tax had never mattered to the Red Sox before, but the new CBA is much more severe on those who stay above the luxury tax. The Red Sox are not the only team you'll see scrambling to get under the tax in the next couple of years. In essence, staying above the cap would hamstring the Red Sox from spending more money on future FA's. I understand that, as fans, we could care less about their bottom line and think they should just spend money, but that's not how it works.

    That's why people use the league in most arguments. The NL, with weaker offenses and more spacious ballparks in general, always has several teams near the top of the BP chain, specially and the NL West, and it is inconsequential to the discussion. The Sox BP was one of the best in the AL last year, which is a stronger league than the NL, and the point can't be contended. Also, if Aceves returns to the BP (likely) and the rotation gives them more innings (you mentioned Lackey but forgot the rest of the 5-innings and less crew conveniently) the BP has a chance for an overall similar performance, at least.
