  1. Not according to several people, including several sportswriters. No one could be convinced of it either way. We don't even know if they'll be over it for sure yet. They could dump salary if things go South. Let's not act like we know their thinking, because honestly, who knows what's the direction they're going. They're all over the place. If they were going over the cap anyway, as you are now so convinced they would, then this makes no sense. They should have blown it. Sign Ortiz, keep Scutaro and sign the pitcher.
  2. What i'm saying is that if, as reported, they are over the cap, then trading Scutaro makes no sense and Ortiz' arb shouldn't be a problem. If they're under it, they f***ed up either way, but this is not on the Ortiz arb deal. They could have kept him and still added a pitcher if reports are to be believed. Also, i don't understand your point using WAR here. What do you mean exactly?
  3. Funny, because 15 million for Buehrle would have been overpaying. In essence, the Ortiz thing isn't what has interfered with getting another pitcher. They've been playing hardball because they so desire. Look at the reports saying money is no longer a problem. Time to stop using Ortiz as a scapegoat.
  4. So how do you suggest the Red Sox deal with the situation? It's stupid to think they were just going to cut ties with the both of them precisely for the reasons you mention. You invite them to ST and you give yourself a triple-safety blanket: Not only is there a possibility they don't show up, if they do and suck, you can cut them and not regret it, and if they look good you still have no responsibility towards them. Let's be realistic here, the ST invite doesn't tie up the Sox in any shape, way or form.
  5. Varitek has always been awful with the bases loaded. He could still be an asset for half-a-season. The one who's really done is Wakefield. As for your earlier post, it still stands. There is no over-simplification, An ST invite means nothing. You've all been singing the praises for Valentine since he got hired, but he wouldn't have the balls to cut them (that is, if they show up)? Please.
  6. Overstating, to say the least.
  7. What? The speculation for Ortiz' supposed negotiations for a multi-year deal were rampant that winter. He wanted a multi-year deal, got the option picked up. This year, he wanted a multi-year deal, got arbitration. He got one year last year, one year this year. You are creating a circumstance where there is none. They are pretty much exactly the same situation. He will have to play for his next contract this year just like he did last year.
  8. ...which is exactly the same thing you could have said last year. Not to mention the Sox aren't the only team in MLB. He wants money, he'll have to play for it.
  9. He did sulk because he didn't get his multi-year contract. Just like this year. What can't be debated is that he produced. And he's playing for another contract again if he wants to keep playing, which he seems to do, so he's exactly in the same position as last year.
  10. He was "sulking" last year: .953 OPS, 8th in the Majors.
  11. It would have to be taken to extremes, which is the problem. A-Rod cheating on his wife and getting scourged by the whip of public opinion? Distraction. Ortiz complaining about an umpire? No-news.
  12. Does it matter as long as he hits? That's what i'm asking here.
  13. Fred, how are Wakefield and Varitek "embedded" in the team if they are free agents? That makes absolutely no sense. As for Ortiz, who cares if he whines if he keeps producing. He was the 8th most productive hitter in baseball last year. Would you rather he be replaced with a s***** alternative that keeps his mouth shut? All of these psychological examinations of players are ridiculous. Who gives a s*** how much they whine if they produce? Ortiz produces.
  14. Truth: The most painful of weapons.
  15. Pitcher A has averaged 135 IP the last three years. Pitcher B has averaged 195 IP the last three years. That is Jacksonian's main point of contention, and he is unequivocally correct. Also, Burnett's stuff would allow him to fare much better in the NL Central. Wake's health wouldn't improve going from the AL to the NL nor would the aging stop.
  16. They can't be cut, released or sent away because they are FREE AGENTS. They are not on the roster. As of right now, they are in no way, shape or form part of the Boston Red Sox. As for the rest of your post, what did you expect? They weren't going to tell two guys who are legends for the Sox to go f*** themselves, they had to ease the blow, and that's what they done. IF they show up to ST, they'd have to prove they have something left in the tank, and neither of them do. Also, i understand the dislike for Wake because he's sucked so bad the last three years, but the Varitek hate baffles me.
  17. ^ Best SoxSport post ever.
  18. Maybe the writers are comprised of certain posters from Talksox?
  19. I'm actually glad i let myself get dragged to that Valentine's dinner thingy now. Whew! On topic: The more i read, the more unlikely it seems Ortiz can win this arb case. All of his best comparisons (except Dunn with his miserable 2011) had similar stats while making a lot less money for 2011 and 2012, including his best stats/age comparison in Paul Konerko.
  20. Give it a rest bro. You're not a "straight shooter" you're just an annoyance addicted to negativity.
