    It has always been a problem. He's never been a high-OBP type guy, although he'd shown some improvement. A lot of people thought Fenway would also make his BA/OBP numbers take a hit since he can't hit the ball the other way with authority anyway. These are the factors that make the signing so puzzling.

    Bogaerts is being rated as the Sox' number one prospect by most (if not all) reputable sources right now anyway.

    The problem is that the Sox don't have the major league OR minor league depth to acquire a guy like Teheran or the Canadian Strasburg. No on Bauer, who's about as wild as Charlie Sheen at a party hosted by Lindsay Lohan. Acquiring the assets on the pitching front that the Red Sox sorely will be a challenge of enormous proportions.

    He may know it better, but that doesn't influence their thinking. They're enamored with Jacobs' offensive potential, and they're really not that deep in corner outfielders with legitimate power potential. Remember that a lot of personnel decisions are influenced by depth as much as anything else.

    You do know Mellen has no direct association to the Red Sox or their FO's thinking? And Cecchini is expendable, i'll agree with that, but not because of ability but rather because of positional flexibility.

    But the offensive power potential is unlimited, and ultimately, it's usually the bat and not the glove that gets people to the Majors. Also note that i'm speaking specifically about potential and not present-time output.

    Brandon Jacobs, Blake Swihart have apparently been asked about and "End Call" buttons have swiftly been pressed.

    Brandon Jacobs seems to be an afterthought in your post juiced, and he's probably the highest-upside player in the Sox farm system right after Xander.

    Teams have supposedly inquired about the availability of Clay, Aceves and Morales, and were told no on all three counts. If teams are seriously offering something of value for Lester (who has officially become a reclamation project) and the Red Sox deemed him "untouchable" then that's as clear an indication as any that they actually think they can compete this year. Couple that with their repeated attempts to obtain JJ and Garza right now even though their price would be higher than in the off-season, and it seems as clear as day.
