  1. That defeats the whole idea of "building for the future" and the all-important mantra of "stop handing out stupid contracts" in one fell swoop. Not only do you overpay for mediocre talent, but you block the new wave of pitching prospects, and bloat the payroll (again) for several years.
  2. Who's to say Varitek isn't coaching Lavarnway though? A lot of times, on-the-side work that players do with coaches or ex-players (or even other active players) doesn't get any publicity.
  3. Jesus.
  4. This. I said exactly this in another post but it seems to be getting largely ignored. It's obvious from watching the way they're setting up the team that they feel the current crop of MiLB talent is close, but not ready. They have set the team up to have young talent methodically replace veteran talent, most of which is signed to shorter-term contracts now.
  5. I think the appropriate question would be if there's anyone who DOESN'T think Salty's a negative behind the plate.
  6. I doubt it. I think they'll carry an extra pitcher, and Holt as the extra IF.
  7. There's absolutely no reason why they shouldn't spend that money to improve the club in the short-term in order to hold the fort until the next prospect wave arrives.
  8. We'll just have to wait and see. I personally think they'll go with 4 OF and turn Ciriaco into a super-utility guy.
  9. This. And the funny thing is, that if they hadn't made the moves they did and had kept the payroll low, then the same people who are complaining about the high payroll would be complaining about the owners "pocketing the money". There's just no way to please certain fans.
  10. I didn't know the 25-man roster was set already.
  11. Are you serious? Hamilton, Greinke, Sanchez, Bourn, Upton, Swisher, and even Napoli and Victorino were guys who either signed, could have signed or will sign 4+ year deals and could have fit into the Sox. That argument holds little merit. They could've gotten themselves into more stupid long-term contracts had they wanted to.
  12. Perspective is the correct word. You can't have your cake and eat it too. People want the Red Sox to give themselves a chance to win without sacrificing the future, and this is basically the way to do it.
  13. But also a whole lot of upside, which seems to be the "thing" of the 2013 Boston Red Sox
  14. I keep saying this. At least velocity wise, pitchers seem to come back stronger from TJ surgery no matter the age with little exception.
  15. I don't quite think some here understand what the sabermetric approach is our how it works. Saying that the 95 win goal and this approach are even related shows a fundamental ignorance of the approach itself. And for the record, the Yankees have been using a approach to building their teams as well.
  16. It's easy to be right most of the time when you live by Murphy's Law.
  17. Of course it's an overpay, that's the whole point. Pay a higher AAV so you can get the guys you want on shorter terms.
  18. Since 2009, exactly three pitchers (James Shields, Jeremy Guthrie and Bronson Arroyo) have managed to pitch 200 or more innings with an ERA over 5.00. All three of those cases however, are statistical outliers since they all had what amounts to an awful stretch that threw their season under the bus. They all had an above-average amount of quality starts in those seasons as well.
  19. This is simply not true. The positions played by their main offensive prospects (Bogaerts, JBJ) are not filled by long-term contracts, and making space in a rotation whose back-end is filled with mediocrity is no problem. That argument makes no sense.
  20. This is outright fallacy. The team's currently set up in a way that their main hitting prospects' positions are filled basically on a year-to-year basis with CF and SS vacating just in time for Bogaerts and JBJ. As for pitching prospects, having a spot when they're ready to contribute will be no problem with Dempster's expiring contract and the carousel teams always have in the #5 spot in the rotation.
  21. I was about to post this. Smoak seems to have stagnated but he was a big switch-hitting power guy with excellent MiLB numbers and major league projections. Maybe Safeco has messed with his head and all he needs is a fresh start somewhere else.
  22. I've always thought, and always will think this is failthought. In the WC era winning the division is largely meaningless, but saying any team tries to build for a WC berth is beyond ludicrous. Not just the Red Sox, any team. Everybody wants home-field advantage in the playoffs if they get there. I just don't understand the thought process of some of the people in this board, looking for things to whine about where there aren't any.
  23. And in the meantime we'll have the pleasure of reading the diatribes of the people who should be running the Red Sox because of their great knowledge about baseball operations, but are stuck with the unenviable role of Monday-night quarterbacking.
  24. No i don't. There are several things they do that i don't particularly like (Victorino and Gomes come to mind) the difference is that i don't spend my time writing about how much the FO sucks, how much more i know than everyone else about baseball and insulting other posters. You can express your displeasure (as misguided as it may be) without being an asshat, but it seems like you're incapable of managing such a monumental task. And for the record, yes, some Red Sox fans around here are extremely entitled and they DO talk TOO MUCH. The point here is that there's nothing they can do that satisfies you, you will always find something to bitch about, and that gets old. IF they blow it, then you can bitch about it, but for the love of God, why whine whine whine about it now. Also, Cody Ross? Are you serious?
