    Of course they can get him. But after they set that value, the result is completely out of their hands. You're contradicting your earlier argument about mid-market team making splashy moves with the extra money they may have or are bound to receive. And unlike Stephen Drew, who's a mid-tier FA, Abreu could be (emphasis on could) a franchise-altering bat. Who'd have thought the A's, of all teams, would end up with Cespedes?

    Yeah the Red Sox have never been particularly kind to Rivera. Mariano's career numbers would probably look a lot better were it not for some punishing outings against the Sox.

    Because "who's capable of outspending" is not how it works. They will assign a value to Abreu based on what they think his production will be worth, and will not budge from it. If you look at it from that perspective instead of "We're the Red Sox, and we'll make the highest bid because we can", the playing field for any target becomes a lot more even.

    Back to this topic after what i'm sure was a very compelling baseball comment by a700 (thank you ignore list). Carp is an excellent platoon hitter/bench bat, but that's probably the position where he excels at. With the possibility of bringing Napoli back, Abreu as an enticing target as well as a fairly decent FA market, at worse the Red Sox could find a platoon partner for Carp without exposing him to LHP. This is made even easier by the fact that he's dirt cheap, not having had his first arb season yet.

    People are projecting Abreu way too optimistically. And people are also speaking with some certainty that the Sox will be able to sign him without much trouble. Both stances are very much unreasonable.

    ...and you'd also have a fantastic depth at all IF positions, with WMB and XB being able to play multiple positions, and Carp being a solid 1B backup.

    Signing Drew to "compete" with XB is a massive waste of resources. You're never certain you can unload these veterans at the TDL or how that can affect team chemistry. The Sox should go with a clear plan that involves as much certainty as possible imo.

    They can sign a veteran guy as insurance, and you don't pay 14 mill to a guy "in case" someone gets injured. On a side note, i'm all for re-signing Drew and moving XB to 3rd and WMB to 1st if they can't re-sign Napoli on their terms.
