  1. There's a difference between not wanting to give a specific player an obscene amount of dollars and not having money. John Henry himself said he's more than willing to cruise over the luxury tax. If someone knows exactly how much payroll flexibility the Sox have, it's Henry, because he writes the checks. My logic is based on what the owner of this team is saying. I suggest you check your own logic.
  2. Indeed, but also remember that he's a career 3.27 ERA, 123 ERA+ guy. If you read through the thread however, you'll notice that Mat Latos is my preferred Reds starter.
  3. What the hell is he even talking about?
  4. This is an interesting idea which i hadn't thought about. Good points.
  5. I prefer Latos anyways, and him i think they'll deal.
  6. But in the interview, Jocketty said that they're looking to trim payroll so they can get a LF. So again, if they can get their LF paid for by moving a pitcher, they could address other areas. In that scenario, it makes sense. The interview's up in mlb.con if anyone wants to take a gander.
  7. Well the narrative is that they want to go for it, so they'll trade an SP for an OF, and deal with the consequences later. At least that's what i gather.
  8. Yes, that's why i noted he was talking about "one of his pitchers". But if we focus on Cueto, and the Reds are desperately looking for an OF, wouldn't it make sense for Cespedes to be part of the package either way?
  9. I didn't say Cueto specifically. I clearly said "one of his pitchers".
  10. Yup, he ain't walking through that door. If they weren't willing to pay 150 for Lester, they ain't paying 200 for Scherzer.
  11. They'll be there if the contract becomes an albatross, which it likely will the last two years.
  12. The Reds' GM wants a LF and an SP prospect for one of his pitchers if he does trade them, noting the "1 year of control left" issue. Guess who has a 20+ homer OF and a bunch of blocked SP prospects just lyin' around......
  13. It's simple. The Red Sox were counting on Lester not having the absolutely best season of his career in his platform year, while Lester bet that he could. Lester won. The real problem here is that Lester probably saw that initial offer as a slap in the face, and i don't blame him. Those who assume he would have signed for way below market value, however, are either looking for mental masturbation help so they can whine, or they wanna be a jackass about it (looking at Jacko). The point is that the Sox could have handled the negotiations better, but if anyone here tells me they expected Lester to put up the season that he did, they're lying.
  14. Agian, they got the biggest gun they could find, then promptly shot themselves in the foot with it.
  15. Any trade for a Reds SP begins and ends with Cespedes. They are looking for a LF, and they are known to be in on him and have had talks with the Sox about at least Latos, who i like, but that's besides the point.
  16. You're ruining the moment. This is the calm before the storm.
  17. Oh. So what constitutes a discount, smart guy?
  18. Because pitchers are a much higher risk. That's the only reasoning i can see behind it.
  19. Sox looked for the biggest gun they could find, and when they got it, shot themselves in the foot with it during the Lester negotiations.
  20. All they need to do is pluck one of those guys in exchange for Cespedes (probably one of the Reds guys) and sign Shields. Then they can take their time deciding on one of the mid-tier FA's and pray for rain. It'll be much better next offseason, although some of those guys are bound to get extended.
  21. Next offseason should be the real boon for arms too. Funny how that works. Now there's pitching all over the place but it's near-impossible to get a power bat.
  22. All the best to him and the Cubs.
  23. The FO did its usual thing of assigning a value and not going past it. I still think the initial extension talks did blow up in their face, but if they adequately replace Lester, i personally won't be mad. Some here will whine (par for the course) but they have plenty of options.
  24. Sign Shields/ trade for a number 2. Ideally that number 2 would be Mat Latos. If they get Masterson/Porcello too, they're in business.
  25. There was just no way he'd take 20 million less. No way.
