  1. I concur. That is why I think the idea of the season beginning on time is unrealistic.
  2. The pandemic has reversed the trend and the decline in golf. The number of rounds has increased by 20 % the past year reversing a multi year trend. Even with the pandemic more than four golf courses here in southern Delaware have closed within the past two years. While the men's PGA is going well, the LPGA is a shadow of its former self, however.
  3. According to Forbes which had the above figures and more. It also shows that Sox had an operating income of 89m in 2019. So it is pretty clear that a loss of 40% of their total revenue which paid attendance represents would turn an approx 90 million operating income into a multi million dollar operating loss. Btw even Forbes figures are at best an estimate since MLB clubs keep their actual figures quite closely held. In any case even a cursory understanding of these figures demonstrates that it is simply not sustainable for MLB to operate successfully without paid in game attendance. To suggest otherwise is nonsense. It should also be noted that those figures and ratios of gate to total revenue are for the Red Sox only. Other teams in smaller media markets may be much more dependent on paid attendance.
  4. That fact that you actually believe that most MLB teams actually make enough money on TV revenue alone without fans in attendance to sustain their operations is incredible. Of course you know this because you are intimately acquainted with the balance sheets and economics of each club.
  5. Obviously the.owners know their revenue streams . They know that TV revenue alone does not compensate for the loss of gate to justify playing the extra games without paying customers in attendance. Moreover, I think it is becoming obvious to all professional sports owners that tv ratings of games without fans in attendance are lower then games with fans in attendance.
  6. Your assumption is that fans will return the moment they resume play. It is not a foregone conclusion that states such as California, New York, Pennsylvania Illinois Ohio or Massachusetts will be allowing fans to return before July if then.
  7. I think players' vaccinations reduce the expense and logistical issues that arose during last years season. I think it also may be a major issue with allowing seamless cross border travel to Canada.
  8. So it begins. The owners want to delay the start of the 2021 season until all players have been vaccinated. This means probably until May or June. The owners are projecting a 140 game season. Needless to say the players are opposed wanting to play the full 162. I for one think the owners have the high ground. I think it fool hearty to begin the season until most if not all involved have had the opportunity to have been vaccinated. I also think what the government of Canada decides regarding cross border travel will play a big role as to when the season begins. Here is an excerpt from yesterday's Athletic "Because a CBA is in place, MLB has no entrée to unilaterally change the length of season. No proposal on a shortened season has been made and there is no negotiation on that specific point, at least not at this time. The union does not appear opposed to any revision of the schedule, but if a reduction in games played is to include a drop in pay, the players are uninterested. If the games would be made up later in the year or player pay would be the same, there could be greater room for discussion. To this point, MLB has indicated interest only in a scenario that includes reductions for missed games." The Athletic De 15 2020
  9. The origin of the Braves nickname is quite curious. Growing up in Boston in the late 40s early 50s I was originally a Braves fan. My 1st Major League game was a Braves game. I always thought erroneously it turned out that the braves were named after the patriots who were dressed up as Indian Braves to throw the tea overboard at the Boston tea party. It turns out that the Braves got that name after their owner Frank Gafney in 1912 who was a member of Tamany Hall. Member were called braves after the Indian Chief who was the symbol of New York Democratic Political machine Tammany Hall. So the Braves are actually named after a corrupt Democratic political machine.LOL
  10. How many Mass regional high schools have Indian names? A lot! They honor the native peoples.
  11. Louis Sockalexis, a member of the Penobscot Indian tribe of Maine, played in only 94 major league games, but is remembered today as the first Native American, and first recognized minority, to perform in the National League. Sockalexis played for the Cleveland team then known as the Spiders. Purportedly the Guardians were named in his honor, although that claim is dubious. Nevertheless, one would think that Sockalexis would get more recognition than he has. My freshman English professor spoke of Sockalexis often since he attended Holy Cross which was a collegiate baseball power at the beginning of the 20th century up until the early 50s
  12. If all goes as well as possible, fans by the 4 th of July God willing.
  13. Tell that to Ccuomo
  14. Your reading comprehension skills are lacking. I never said BC doesn't deserve some credit. You are drawing an inference that was purely in your imagination.
  15. Biden will give Phillies fans first priority.
  16. Every club is actually wondering when and if there will be ticket sales or n 21.
  17. From everything I have heard in the national baseball media seems to agree with that point of view.
  18. As I get older my memory is not as good as it once was, but I never recall posting that BC doesn't deserve some credit for the Red Sox past success. So please stop mischaracterizing my opinion. To be perfectly clear the decision to bring in DD was Henry's. He obviously felt BC was lacking to some degree or another. In any case that is all in the past. DD and BC both now work for other franchises. Both face considerable challenges in getting either of their respective clubs back as contenders. Obviously the ownership of each club has confidence in them until such time as they don't. Such is baseball
  19. How is it hypocritical? Fact DD largely put that team together and they won the year after DD left. If you want to give Cheringtton credit for a team winning two years after he left, no one is stopping you.
  20. DD was four times baseball exec of the year. He and Theo Epstein are among the few MLB execs who has built two World Series winners with two different franchises. In addition he is largely credited with building the Marlins team that won it all in 2003. The Phillies went after him aggressively after he had refused two previous offers from them. As was said by ESPN, Dombrowski was brought on to retool not rebuild. Given DD's track record and the fact that Phillies ownership was persistent in the pursuit of him they know exactly what they are getting in Dombrowski. They and their fans could care less about their farm system. The Phillies need to win now and they don't give a damn how many prospects DD trades so long as he gets them to the playoff and to the world series as soon as possible.
  21. I guess the Phillies owner wants to win now.
  22. Sale E Rod and Eovaldi will need to travel with an entire wing from Mass Gen Hospital to keep them playing. They give new meaning to the term walking wounded. They might as well have Pedroia at second to.make a complete foursome.
