  1. Not to quibble but I believe Elston Howard came up in 1955. Pumpsie Green in 1959
  2. Please don't equate conservative with racists. Liberal "Boston" has the reputation in the NBA as a racist town which is one of the problem the Celtics have in attracting top notch free agents. As a life member of the NAACP some of the most racist people I know are self identified as progressives and liberals. BTW Yawkey was the last to have a black player well over ten years after Jackie broke in in 1947. Aaron was signed in 1952 the last year the Braves were in Boston.
  3. Watch what happens with the Dodgers and the Mets. I could see a situation arise that various ownership groups who were unsuccessful getting the Dodgers could be interested in another opportunity. Re the Mets, reportedly that franchise's equity value has sunk to around 250 million making it a bargain. Don't discount the possibilty that Wilbon will be forced to sell. So there is a market out there and a lot of investors despite the economy. Such a climate is an opportunity for an entrepreneur. Who knows. I could see various possibilites once LL's contract is up in a year assuming he doesn't get the commisssioner's job
  4. Sounds like a platitude?
  5. Yes but, Someone could make him an offer that he couldn't refuse;)
  6. Yawkey carried his favorite players on the active roster while better players lanquished in the minors. Yawkey's record on this was pretty clear.
  7. Aren't you old enough to remember Tom Yawkey. He had his favorites and kept them well past their prime because he ran the Red Sox like his South Carolina plantation. It was because of him that the Red Sox were the last team to sign an African- American player, Pumspie Green. That's where the 25 players 25 cabs label originated. I believe he passed on signing such players as Willie Mays and Hank Aaron. .
  8. Not if he gets the right offer or sees the right opportunity:D
  9. Excellent observation!
  10. I happen to agree. In retropect I think Tito began to loose it after the 2008 season. I think the whole Manny affair took its toll. It probably caused the gradual erosion of respect that the players had not only in Tito's style but also in FO backing for him. If I recall correctly we began to hearthe first grumbling about Tito's status around that time.
  11. On that I can agree.
  12. I and others give examples which refute your absolute statements and you call call it a strawman. I cite more than a half dozen other managers who have used the media to call out players and you come other managers who may or may not have which demonstrate nothing to back up your original erroneous contention. The point is that many highly successful mangers not just BV use the press that was my original point.
  13. You are really stretching it to make your point. The facts seem too support the alternative point of view. The bottom line is however this is the hot stove so we have nothing better to talk about. None of us will know if BV's' approach will work until the season begins. If we win hoorah he was right. If the team blows up like the 2001 team and he gets fired we'll know it didn't. I think it will be the former.
  14. Well said! CC Beckett et al are their own worst enemies.
  15. You are changing the orignal premise of the discussion which was what I refuted. To state User's original premise " Smart big-market managers avoid giving the media fodder as much as they can. Valentine is doing the opposite. It's really that simple. He can pull off the necessary no-nonsense rulings and call-outs without going to the media. " I cited numerous examples of smart big market managers using the press to call out players. I am now glad that you agree with my original point. As far as first introduction don't you think it was C who caused the stir in the first palce. None of this would have happened had CC acted both intelligently and respectfully, instead of the petulent immature child that he appears to be. He not BV was the one getting ripped in the press. I think that says it all.
