  1. Its way too early to make any judgments about Dumbrowski except that he has had a good opening act. But as any playwright knows many a show has closed early because the second act was weak and the third act was worse. I prefer to wait until I've seen the entire play before writing a final review.
  2. I have had him on ignore now for so long I am surprised he still posts. Like they say does a tree falling in forest make any noise if there is no one to around to hear it.
  3. It isn't insane it is called the free market
  4. How can you say that since you have no way of knowing how those "prospects" will turn out they could all be Will Middlebrooks or Garin Cecchini. Since less than 25% of the so called blue chip prospects turn out to be solid ML performers it was a good deal. Your type of thinking is why Cherrington is out of baseball.
  5. Professional sports is the entertainment business. No one complains when movie stars make ridiculous sums to appear in a movie. From a business perspective Price is worth a million dollars a start IF the NESN ratings improve and overall revenue increases by a proportionate amount. No one should worry about John Henry going broke anytime soon. I am sure he decided Price was worth he money or he wouldn't have hired Dumbrowski and allowed him to make such a deal.
  6. This is the reason why trading prospects for Kimbrel was a good idea.
  7. Every GM has their time to go. While I never thought Theo was an incompetent GM and Chief of Baseball Operations as was Cherrington, it was his time to move on. And he knew it if there were those among the fan base who didn't. I don't care what Cherrington did or didn't do to build the farm system as Chief of Baseball Operations he was over his head. He was ill suited for the job and that's why he was fired. (Oh I know he was given an opportunity to take a demotion but make no mistake about it he was fired) John Henry finally realized Cherrington's limitations and forced him out along with Larry Lucchino although the latter a bit more gracefully.
  8. He never reached his potential. He never impressed me during the 5 or 6 times I saw him play.
  9. Winiston Churchill once said of Anthony Eden he was a great foreign minister but a terrible prime minister. That's my view of Cherrington. He was a good number 2 or 3 but a lousy nbr 1. When Theo left, Henry and Lucchino made the mistake of promoting Cherrington to a position for which he was ill suited.
  10. I think many rightly attribute the so called strong farm system to a product of Theo's doing rather than Cherrington's. The only thing we know for sure is that Cherrington is out of baseball. It remains to be seen if and when he'll be able to get back in and at what level. That will say more about what the baseball professional really thinks about Cherrington's competency and effectiveness then the sycophants who sing his praises for his record of finishing last more often than not.
  11. In any case, Cherrington's efforts didn't impress Henry enough to save his job. There is absolutely no evidence to suggest that Cherrington wanted to do what Dumbrowski did. Cherrington biggest flaw was he was promoted way beyond his level of competence. He was the embodiment of the Peter Principle.
  12. But can you really give Cherrington credit for that other than being there. Henry was so impressed with Cherrington's contribution that he basically s*** canned him.
  13. I think that's the meaning of what I said in the first sentence. Whatever Cherrington's contribution to the farm system turns out to be doesn't change the fact that his only real accomplishment to date is finishing last more often than not.
  14. No but it means it is too early to give Cherrington credit for creating this wonderful farm system that some of his acolytes on this board are wont to do. In my book Cherrington was a factotum who was promoted far beyond his level of competence and only succeeded in finishing last more often than not.
  15. I guess that means that Cherrington really didn't accomplish anything.
  16. There are those who claim Cherrington deserves credit for building this great farm system. While the farm system has some quality prospects and the B boys, it hasn't produced any quality starters in over a decade. Except for the oft injured Buchholtz, all the current likely starters were developed elsewhere. I agree with you. I am not impressed with Owens.
  17. Henry was outspoken about his opinion that spending big bucks for long term over 30 year old pitchers was a waste. Henry lost faith in Cherrington either because Cherrington believed in that philosophy also or he couldn't convince Henry it wasn't working and Cherrington demonstrated poor skills at constructing a competitive team. I said before and I say again that changing that approach was part of the deal in order to get Dumbrowski. Dumbrowski did something that your boy Cherrington couldn't do that's why he is here and Cherrington is off licking his wounds pouting someplace.
  18. Well I was wrong I thought the Cubs would get Price. I am glad that he is in Boston. Yes the Sox may have overpaid but if they did it wasn't by that much. Jim Bowdoin said over a week ago he thought Price would get 7 years and 210. It is clear that Dumbrowski was able to do what Cherrington couldn't, that is convince John Henry that he had to give a long term deal to an ace over 30.
  19. Remember Fernandez is a little more than a year away from TJ surgery which he had in 2014. I believe there is also some question of elbow tendinitis. He'll probably be on some inning limitations. All that being said Fernandez would be a fine pickup but the Sox need to pursue other top notch starters before Fernandez who has too many possible health issues to suit me.
  20. I am sure they say that to all the teams! I still think that the Cubbies have the inside track because of Maddon. But money will talk in the end.
  21. Who starts here, who starts in Pawtucket and who is traded (Yes they may trade a pitcher) depends on two variables that are unknown at this time. The first is of course whether or not they obtain one or two starters either via Free Agency or through a trade. And the second is what kind of shape everyone is in when they report to ST and how they perform in the spring. Remember Buchholtz had a very poor spring several years ago and wasn't stretched out properly and couldn't go more than 5 innings for quite a while. Who knows what kind of spring any of the starters are likely to have in November. That being said I'd be stunned if ER isn't with the big club come opening day. If the Sox do pick up a starter, I think the odd man out is likely to be Joe Kelly who is as unpredictable as they come. It is probable that Kelly may be part of package to round out the club.
  22. I don't what the FO has said or what the various Boston sportswriter have written that would make you draw that conclusion. The Sox need pitching. Everyone knows that. I believe they'll try their best to get an ace but if they can't, I think they know they have no choice but to go out and get the best starter available and perhaps more than one if possible. After two last place finishes I think even Henry knows that he must make moves this off season that excite the fanbase. So if DD fails to get an ace despite making every effort to do so he'll have to pull off some other major deal. That being said, I see them going full steam at trying to sign a number 1 and making every effort to move HR and the Panda to soothe a very angry Red Sox Nation.
  23. The Cubs aren't the Red Sox. They haven't won a title in over a hundred years. Theo wants to make history. I don't think they are thinking long term.
  24. If Theo matches Boston's money and years he goes to the Cubs. They have the inside track because of Maddon,IMHO
  25. I think to characterize one trade involving some prospects (none of whom were the clubs top prospects) for an all star closer is an almost hysterical over reaction.
