  1. "If it wasn't Boston, I would want to play in Cincinnati just to say that I did it," Youkilis said. "I grew up rooting for them. I used to be bitter towards the Reds because they didn't draft me, but that bitterness is gone. It would be fun and it would be for my family." This is Youkilis from an earlier story on the ESPN site. Would a trade for Scott Rolen and Edinson Volquez be a viable option? Volquez is a hard thrower who was a 17 game winner in 2008 but had Tommy John in 2009. He came back early and started for the Reds last year in game one of the National League playoffs against the Phillies. Rolen has been injured and might not agree to a trade. Maybe Juan Francisco would be a substitute if the Reds threw in a relief pitcher (Masset).
  2. First round picks are not all equal. The Rays had a number of number one through fives where the Sox have been in the twenties for decades.
  3. It certainly helps to finish with the worst record in baseball and get high draft choices for several years. Just sayin', but they have done a great job of developing those guys.
  4. I don't know. He has been so bad. Historically bad. Which team could be that horribly desperate for pitching? In the non-steroid era, outside of Boston, the scales of offense/pitching are shifting. A well below average pitcher could do better. The Sox will not get any favors from anyone where Lackey is concerned.
  5. More than one vacant manager position in the last year or so since Valentine has been on ESPN has pointed towards Valentine. We saw it in Florida and Baltimore. I am not saying he won't get it, but by virtue of being high profile by being on television, he is likely to get more positive speculation. Btw, maybe ESPN, the main proponents, just want to get rid of him.
  6. This came too quickly off the top of my head. I think the Giants need more for Cain. Also, I believe the Reds are giving up too much and not getting much beyond salary relief. They already have Cordero's contract coming off the books.
  7. But if you are talking for Felix, they are not enough. If a three-way for Cain, they don't have enough. Perhaps a four-way with Cincinnati. Brandon Phillips (owed $13 million in 2012), Reddick, and Youkilis to SF. Boston takes Arroyo's contract $13 million for two years and sends Lavarnway to KC who send the Reds a pitching prospect other than Montgomery or Lamb. Boston gets Cain.
  8. I'm not sure Youkilis's off season and injuries make him real attractive to teams at this point. It is just the way things go on the trade market. He has value but not like he did before this past season. A team taking him would expect to pay low for most recent production.
  9. Youkilis and Lavarnway would probably have to be packaged in a three-way deal. I don't see either fitting the Giants' most pressing needs. The problem is finding a team desperately in need of what the Sox can provide. The Giants need an offensively gifted center fielder, a shortstop, and a leadoff hitter badly. They are expected to be hard players for Jose Reyes but they will need more than just one element to improve that horrible offense. It is hard to find a third party. The contenders won't trade away what would bring a Matt Cain so it has to be a team rebuilding and in need of either prospects or salary relief. Houston has Carlos Lee but he won't get it done. The Cubs have Soriano but forget that. The Mets' David Wright is worthless at this point. Seattle has no one. Minnesota has Denard Spann, but he won't be near enough. Oakland is out. Who then?
  10. Has anyone mentioned Joe Torre? I'm only half kidding.
  11. I agree on Cain, but what exactly can the Sox send to a contending team in desperate need of impact on offense. The Giants won't trade Cain or Lincecum unless they can drastically improve their team. They won't be interested in prospects that won't make an immediate impact to their cause.
  12. Carlton Fisk might be an interesting avenue to look towards. Catchers make greT managers as a rule and he would take control of a clubhouse.
  13. Actually, Matt Cain was my choice over Lincecum until I looked up contract status. Cain has one year left and Lincecum has two. Cain isn't a household name but is probably one of the few true ace-type pitchers in baseball. When he hits the market, he will be a rich man. As much as I like Matt Cain, I can't figure out anyone the Sox match up with in trade. Youkilis does not have real optimum trade value at this time like after he was hitting .300 and OPSing .970. At this point, Matt Cain commands much more than a .259 hitter who OPSed .833. The Giants are trying to get back into the World Series soon and not likely to want the Sox' prospects.
  14. I like the Phillies' bench coach Pete Mackanin. He is a highly respected baseball mind and did an excellent job taking over in an interim role in 2008 for the Reds. He deserved the job but Dusty Baker was given the job. Another thought would be Jason Varitek. I think he might need a few seasons as a coach first, but he will make a good one someday. Former catchers tend to make the best managers.
  15. Whoa! I figured it was likely to happen but was having a hard time wrappng my mind around it actually happening.
  16. I think the Red Sox are too into defensive metrics to consider Casey Blake or Willingham.
  17. No, several of us have brought him up a few times. He would be my number one target for sure, but he will command a big, big, long term contract. And, Lackey makes a big, long term contract to a pitcher seem pretty scary. Also, the Yankees and Rangers will be big players for his services, not to mention reports of the Nationals. He could end up getting $100 million 6 or 7 year contract. C.J. Wilson should be the top priority, but it seems likely he will end up in New York (top dollar) or Texas (hometown discount).
