  1. One thing that bothers me about Andrew Bailey is his home and away splits with strikeouts and walks. He has struck out batters at a 10.4 rate in that big Oakland park and only 7.4 away. His walks on the road are also way more frequent. This tells me he probably pitches more aggresively and more confidently in that big ballpark. The rest of his splits are pretty equal, but he tended to have more home appearances (probably due to more win opportunities).
  2. I am not crazy about this trade, but you put it in a pretty good light with this post.
  3. http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=ys-accuscore_home_run_derby_jinx_071011 Maybe.
  4. Sweeney is a puzzle in this deal. I'm guessing the Sox had to take his salary as part of the main deal. I was really hoping they wouldn't acquire Bailey. I have not seen much of him but don't like his injury history.
  5. I see the Yankees have signed Hideki Okajima. I'll miss the guy and hate seeing him in pinstripes. Depending on how outrageous Boras's pricetag, I think Edwin Jackson is starting to look more viable as the number four starter. I don't mind trying Bard or Aceves in the rotation...but not both.
  6. I agree. He has a career OPS over .900 versus lefties and is a versatile defender. Of course, his 2011 season might be scaring off teams. His power versus lefties disappeared.
  7. I will be very disappointed if the Sox sign Madson for even one year. The guy was pressed into closing and came through, but that same scenaraio can be replicated without paying top closer (and Boras) money. At similar ages, Melancon was as good a pitcher as Madson. The Cardinals went through last season and didn't find a closer until the last quarter. The Rays used Farnsworth. The Jays used a former shortstop. Teams waste money when they pay for a proven closer. Find a competent reliever and convert him.
  8. I think the guy is a younger and much cheaper version of Ryan Madson. I believe obtaining a young guy is much smarter way to get a "proven" closer. Oh, and Merry Christmas to all.
  9. Kuroda and/or Wandy Rodriguez would make me satisfied (maybe not quite happy) with the offseason. I accept going into the season with Reddick or Kalish in right, but the Red Sox need to add quality/depth behind the top three starters. They also need to buy some time until the lower prospects are ready to pitch or trade.
  10. I'd be interested in Byrd, but I have no interest in the Sox dealing with the Cubs. Let Epstein and Hoyer fix that mess without the Red Sox helping them. Garza was regressing before he moved to the NL. He had pretty good numbers last year but against lesser opponents and no DH. The Cubs have to live with Soriano and the Sox should not help them out of that problem. I'd rather look at other options. Either Santana would interest me more than Garza. Kuroda is a possibility I'd prefer because of the Epstein/Hoyer factor.
  11. I don't really understand the Cardinals signing a guy with bad knees who will have to move to centerfield when Allen Craig returns from surgery. Garza is going to cost about what Mat Latos and Gio Gonzalez cost in multiple top prospects. I'm not against trading prospects for a proven pitcher, but I'm not sure the Red Sox have the ready and almost ready prospects the Reds and Nationals recently traded. It is frustrating because the starting pitching has to be addressed in my opinion.
  12. That is not a fact. The Diamondbacks likely have a budget which is probably an opinion. They added Kubel and $15 million to their budget. That can be proven and is thus a fact. They are a market of just about 3 million population which is similar to the Minnesota Twins which can be looked up and proven which makes it a fact. We can logically assume that the D'backs operate in a manner in which they have to manipulate their budget in a way different than a larger market. They just acquired an outfielder when they already have three outfielders. We can assume that they need to relieve themselves of additional salary because of their market size. Really, I have expressed an opinion based on observations of smaller market teams and economic needs. Your opinion is based on an apparent belief that teams always make moves based on positional needs. We just disagree.
  13. Market wise, the Arizona Diamondbacks are just ahead of the Minnesota Twins. We are not talking about a team in a market like New York , Philadelphia, or Boston. They will build towards decent because they have economic restraints that do not exist in some larger markets. I'm guessing Saito just about depleted the bullpen budget.
  14. I did go to MLBTR and this is the latest I found:
  15. They have four outfielders. Three of them are are well paid. One of them, Parra, is inexpensive, had a good OBP, and can play defensively in any outfield position. One of them, Kubel, just signed with them, and Upton is not likely to be traded. Teams go for salary relief. Where?
  16. I see salary relief as being their motivation.
  17. That sounds good to me and more than reasonable for the D'backs.
  18. He had wrist and thumb problems. It is always a good idea to buy low. I just can't imagine what the D'backs will do with four outfielders. I'm guessing Young makes more money than Parra and that might make Young expendable.
  19. Parra is a lefty and not what the Sox really need. However, Parra can also play centerfield which might make Chris Young and his right handed power bat available. He has played center in his career but surely can adjust to playing right.
  20. If you were around in 1967, I strongly suggest Down to the Wire by Jeff Miller. It is the best Red Sox book I have ever read. In fact, I think I will reread it again for the third time next week. http://www.amazon.com/Down-Wire-Jeff-Miller/dp/0878337830
  21. I was not in favor of acquiring him at the deadline but think he now may be a legitimate right field possibility now. Teams apparently are leery of his recent history of injuries, and he might be signed for a relative bargain considering his WAR.
