  1. I would rather have Gio Gonzalez also but fear Beane is trying to validate his latest "genius" tag generated by the movie. He apparently turned down the deal the Reds dealt to San Diego for Mat Latos.
  2. Good question. Perhaps they want to capitalize on what they feel was a career year. Perhaps they know teams will be willing to overpay in a pitching poor market. I agree with those who would rather not deplete the farm by overpaying for a questionable talent. I am warming to the Bard Aceves to the rotation idea and building the bullpen. Ordinarily, I'd say it is a difficult/unpredictable task to build a bullpen, but this is a bad year to build a rotation.
  3. Right. The primary need is pitching. As for the line-up being too left-handed, I don't believe it is nearly the issue some believe. At least two thirds of the pitchers in the league are right handed, so if anything, a heavily lefthanded order presents a problem for a majority of pitchers in the league.
  4. Right. Three days wouldn't make sense.
  5. Jays apparently have won the rights to Darvish and have (I believe) three days to sign him. Now, maybe we see some movement on the availble pitchers out there.
  6. Kalish or Reddick will probably be packaged for pitching, but there isn't much out there to add right handed hitting to the outfield.
  7. Of the free agents, I see only Beltran and Cuddyer as worthy outfielders remaining on the market....and they will probably be overpaid. I like Cuddyer because he can play third in a pinch, but have a feeling the Sox are willing to go with Kalish or Reddick. If they spend the money saved on improving the pitching, I'd accept one or both of the youngsters in right.
  8. Unfortunately, the Sox traded Lowrie when his value was low. He really was never in the Sox long range plans so he should have been traded last winter.
  9. He is a pretty good defender, but I would rather they had looked into someone with more offense like a Ryan Theriot.
  10. I wish the sox had traded Lowrie last winter when his stock was much higher. Melancon's K rate in the NL is a concern, but he does appear to be a groundball pitcher. I hope this works out.
  11. I love Google and I'm a fast googler!
  12. Yes, dumpster diving is not a good practice if it is the only strategy for building a team. The World Champion Cardinals did a good job "diving" for Lance Berkman, and they should not be criticized for their dive. Any strategy can fail, but "diving" can be beneficial when money is tight.
  13. I like the Twins, also. It is hard not to admire the job Ryan did with that team. Billy Beane gets so much credit, but Ryan actually did a better job of building a consistent winner in a small market. I was in Fort Myers this spring and made friends with several of their loyal fans.
  14. From mlbtraderumors.com We may indeed see some dumpster diving.
  15. Along with other similar phrases, the term has been around in baseball since at least the mid 1990s. Here is one from 2007 referring to Pat Gillick for whom the term was possibly first referred to by Peter Gammons. http://crashburnalley.com/2007/12/13/dumpster-diving/
  16. It has probably already been mentioned, but for ten years (!999-2008) the Rays had four number one picks in the draft and eight 1-4 picks. They usually drafted well but did have the advantage of being a bad team for many years. They have done other things well, also, but they did reap the benefits of high draft picks.
  17. He doesn't miss bats, and he puts up an unimpressive whip. I suppose as a depth he makes some sense, but he isn't much more than that...and at more than $8 million. I think we are hoping for better than Saunders.
  18. The Sox are apparently in on Joe Saunders from Arizona. Geeze, I am not interested in guys with less than 5.0 Ks per nine in the NL.
  19. I wouldn't deal with Theo at this point...especially for someone like Garza. He did better in the NL last year, but his ERA in the AL had been rising almost yearly. And, for what it's worth, Garza is not a plus in the clubhouse.
  20. I really don't think the market is the ultimate measure for the MVP voting. Actually, the first and second votes ended up with Verlander and Ellsbury both with 157 points. It seems as though the bottom votes hurt more. And as you stated in your other post, the voter who cast a ballot with Ellsbury in the 10th spot was trying to unfairly sway the outcome in the favor of someone else. That voter should be held accountable.
  21. I don't see this posted yet. It is just an award and Ellsbury deserved it, but maybe this makes him a bit less expensive to sign.
