  1. From Gordon Edes on ESPNBoston.com
  2. I wish the Sox had called Kevin Millwood up when they had him. He has pitched better than Lackey, Miller, and Wakefield. With Colorado, he has a 1.11 WHIP, 3.34 ERA, and only 4 bases on balls in 32.1 innings.
  3. Beckett has returned to Boston to see a specialist about his ankle. This injury could be serious, and that would put the Red Sox in big trouble. It is the ankle of his power leg so I assume he misses at least a start or two.
  4. Unfortunately, you are right. It is just that Lackey, Miller, and Wakefield have been so bad, I didn't see the need to bring up Bedard. Ugh! Things are bad enough already...and now Beckett is hurting.
  5. If the Sox draw Texas in round one, I'd hate to see Lackey with his difficulties (11.00 ERA) pitch in the series. I just don't see a solution in Miller or Wakefield...or Aceves. Thinking outside the box or throwing Lackey/Miller/Wakefield out there and praying really hard? I think the Red Sox will have some troubles getting through the playoffs unless the number four guy can come through.
  6. Lackey has had success in the playoffs in his career, but he has been bad this year. I agree with you though, the Sox have little chance with the other options. Thank goodness they acquired Bedard. Should the Sox start with Lester in order to break up the left handers?
  7. There is little doubt the Red Sox make the playoffs, but what will be their rotation? Teams have gone with three men rotations, but they are not common in this era. The Sox have virtually been going with a six man rotation lately. Last year, the Giants won with Lincecum, Cain, Sanchez, and Bumgarner. The Rangers got to the World Series with Lee, Wilson, Lewis , and Hunter. What will the Red Sox do? Beckett, Lester, and Bedard are obvious, but who pitches next?? And should the Sox split the lefties? I am more than a little worried.
  8. When healthy, Santana has pitched very well for the Mets. I just am glad the Red Sox didn't give Lester, Ellsbury, Masterson, and Lowrie to get him. I would not mind the Red Sox looking into buying low on Santana tomorrow. I'm just glad they did not buy high on him a few years ago.
  9. You are right. Beyond Jimenez (and look how he has pitched in the AL), there were not any top end of the rotation types out there. But, I can't help believe there were not some upgrades over Wakefield and Miller. I wonder about the likes of former NL strikeout champ Aaron Harang having a comeback year in San Diego. He apparently was available and would have been an upgrade over the bottom of the rotation. In the playoffs, I don't see any possible way the Sox don't go with four starters since they are going with six now. After Beckett, Lester, and Bedard, who pitches? Lackey is probable but scary.
  10. Beltran cost a former number one draft pick and has not produced. The Sox are number one or two in most offensive categories. The problem has not been offense. The problem has been the rotation. I would like to have seen the Sox address starting pitching. But, if they were to have addressed the right field situation, I would rather have had them look towards Hunter Pence than Beltran.
  11. And imho that is a big worry.
  12. Miller has always thrown hard, but he has also always had trouble controlling his fastball. I'd rather not have him in the rotation until he learns to repeat his delivery.
  13. Btw, a dutchy is a marijuana cigarette packed into a small cigar.
  14. Or a starting pitcher beyond Bedard. They are first or second in almost every offensive category as it is.
  15. Nope, if you'd check rather than rant excuses, you'd realize they have almost exactly the same number at bats. If you total in platoon partners, the Sox right fielders have twice as many extra base hits as Beltran. You keep trying to defend your opinion that the Sox should gotten Beltran (you claimed it would take just a willingness to take on contract) when they should have targeted, if anyone, Hunter Pence instead.
  16. Beltran has five extra base hits since joining the Giants. That is fewer than Reddick has had in the same time and some slap hitting middle infielders. And don't use the hand excuse because I understand he has fully recovered.
  17. I don't see what drafting a player has to do with this trade. Draft choices fail all the time and the final chapter on Westmoreland is far from over.
  18. Even when he has not been injured, he has not produced since the trade. He has had more than 80 at bats with the Giants and is OPSing under .300. He has one homerun. At that rate over a whole season he'd have less than ten. It is valid to say a trade didn't work out even if there was an injury. The Giants didn't trade for that kind of production nor for a drop of 8 games in the standings. There are well over 5,000 minor leaguers. A vast majority will never reach the bigs, but those rated in the top 60 prospects are a pretty good bets. Dropping five positions in the top 60 in all of baseball is not as you said, "...close to falling out of prospect status."
  19. Bottom line, injured or not, Beltran has not produced for the Giants. The team has dropped to six games back since acquiring the guy. He has hit one homerun and has an OPS under .300. The way he has been playing, I hope this unlikely event does not happen.
