  1. I like Arroyo but think he is on the downside of his career. Plus, he is signed through 2013 for about $12 million a year.
  2. I have an old weathered Sox hat, a regular one, and one with a green B and shamrock on the back. I have a Sox sweatshirt. I have a Pedroia, Ellsbury, and (but don't wear) Rameriz shirt. I also have a polo shirt with the Boston B on the breast. I also have a Red Sox front license plate and a trailer hitch. I probably have more but can't think of what they are.
  3. I was just in Massachusetts for my 40th reunion. While there, my wife came up from the lobby and said there were a bunch of men down there dressed in old time baseball uniforms. I later ran into a woman in the hallway dressed in a vintage Cincinnati jersey from 1869. I asked her about it, and she said her boyfriend played on a team that travelled around and reenacted that era's baseball. She said they had played a game Friday in Newbury and were headed out to play one (it was Saturday) on Boston Common. Did anyone on here see them this weekend or ever? Does anyone know anything about the teams in Newbury and/or Boston? I had too much to do while up there but would have loved to have seen them play. Here is a year-old link to the Cincinnati team's page: http://www.1869reds.com/
  4. Johnny Sain was the most interesting baseball person I've ever met. He had excellent stories about his baseball experiences. Some of which I can't tell, especially about Billy Martin. He was a total jerk in Sain's opinion.
  5. I am fortunate to have befriended Johnny Sain back in the late '80s-early '90s. His daughter Sheryl and grandson lived here in Conway (he was originally from Arkansas), and he came from Chicago to visit them a couple of times a year. On one visit, he had just been to a card show with Warren Spahn, and he brought me several signed pictures, a cartoon of him engineering a train pulling all the twenty game winners he had produced as a coach, and an old Sporting News article. I also have some photographs of him with my oldest son who was probably in the third grade at the time. I guess he took the time to visit with me because I enjoyed listening to his stories and philosophies. He really enjoyed talking about his 1965 Twins which were something like 15-1 versus Red Sox.
  6. He was overweight and performing at a superior level for years before the allegations ever surfaced. Johnny Sain, possibly the greatest pitching coach of all-time, didn't believe in a strict conditioning program. Pitching is more about rote muscle memory created by the repetition of the sequences involved in a delivery. And some of Sain's pitchers started 40 games a year and threw more than 350 innings.
  7. I read an article in the Hardball Times that sited a study showing fat pitchers were more effective and had longer careers than slender ones. Sabbathia, Bartolo Colon, Mickey Lolich, David Wells, Sid Fernandez, Livan Hernandez, Rick Rueschel, etc. all were overweight, effective, and had long careers. I am not worried about Beckett gaining weight as he ages. Weights happens.
  8. He will be very expensive. He will be 31 next year, but he has excellent mechanics. In this day and age, it looks like the three year contract for an ace like pitcher is about over, so he may be too old to invest in a five to six year contract.
  9. I'd love to see the Sox make C.J. Wilson a priority. If not with the Sox, I definitely do not want him with the Yankees...or even back in the American League.
  10. I paced around and worried during the entire series and not just during the games. I had trouble sleeping. Bucky Blanking Dent, Aaron Blanking Boone, and too many bad experiences have made me a baseball pessimist. I only enjoy Yankee games when they are over and the Sox have officially won.
  11. He went five innings and 70 pitches. I believe that was close to the original plan for his first start coming off his recent inactivity and knee problems.
  12. I agree...elbow, groin, and now a hamstring (I believe). Besides the injuries, he has shown an inconsistent change up. He isn't really ready yet.
  13. Heck, he was sent down to the minors in early June. He didn't resurface until last week when Wilson Betemint was traded to the Tigers.
  14. I am always disappointed when the Sox fail to make a significant acquisition at the trade deadline, but honestly big trades rarely make that big a difference. I remember 1967 when the Sox traded promising first baseman Tony Horton for Gary Bell who had a 1-5 win-loss record with the Guardians. It seemed like a wasted trade when it was announced. Bell went 12-8 for the Bosox the rest of the way and really helped solidify the rotation. As Cody Ross showed last year, it is often the seemingly minor acquisitions that make the biggest differences. The Sox are a very good team, and Bedard certainly won't hurt their chances. He comes at no cost to the current team's makeup.
  15. It has been down, and down is rarely a good indicator. I just have to wonder about the Rockies publicly dangling this guy out there. I see those two facts as red flags. After the Lackey experience, I worry about starting pitchers with any red flags.
  16. I expect the Sox will stay in talks for Jiminez as long as it takes to keep his pricetag high enough to affect the Yankees' chances. As one scout said, "The Rockies are asking for a number one return for a number two starter." He is reasonably signed and under control for a few of years, but is he really worth a King Feilx-like haul? Probably not. So, I think the Sox keep the appearance of interest while they truly look elsewhere. Bedard is probably the smartest move in my opinion. He has pitched very well away from Safeco so his numbers are not affected by that. His price will be reasonable (with valid reason). And, he could actually be very good.
  17. This might already be posted, but it looks like Beltran is going to the Giants for Gary Brown and Zack Wheeler. That means the Mets got a really good haul for a rental.
