  1. I can't see the game. Who is warming up for the Sox?
  2. On an unrelated note, did anyone see Johnny Cueto's impersonation of Luis Tiant's delivery yesterday? I loved it. El Tiante was a master showman.
  3. I wonder what the deal is with Gonzalez. He and his agent must be asking for crazy money. Left handed relievers who don't have bounce the ball to the plate last forever. Jesse Orosco pitched into his forties. So have others. Now, Gonzalez gave up a .900 OPS against right handers last year, but that was mostly due to a terrible first two months. He was not a bad pitcher after that and was effective the last two months.
  4. I think Aceves can be a decent closer but would prefer Melancon. He has been a closer and had a higher k/9 rate last year. Of course, he did it in the NL and wasn't required to pitch as many innings. The biggest thing though is taking Aceves out of the role he performed so well last year. I doubt there is anyone who will be able to fill his shoes.
  5. Actually, I applaud this move. After years of using both sides of a sheet of paper, the Reds are actually spending money to make money. Their fans have to appreciate this effort. In four years, his money might appear to be a bargain. He is an Adrian Gonzalez type talent.
  6. As reported on ESPN, Joey Votto and the Cincinnati Reds agreed Monday on the framework to a 10-year, $225 million extension. I think Votto is a tremendous player. He reminds me of Adrian Gonzalez, but can a medium market team afford this contract?
  7. This is great news as spring training nears its end. Doubront making the rotation is big and could be a huge if he can perform effectively for the year. Now, if the rotation can just stay healthy...
  8. Does anyone remember "Fireball" Fred Wenz? I saw Frank Robinson hit a three-run homer off him that probably still hasn't come down. Guys that throw really hard don't give the ball enough time to get enough rotation on the ball for movement, and Fireball's was straight as a line. He was fast but not fast enough.
  9. I believe the Yankees still have Pat Venditte in their system. He is a truly ambidextrous pitcher. I saw him pitch once, and he doesn't throw nearly hard enough to be a true major league prospect. I believe he will have a long career in the minor leagues if he chooses. Btw, I can throw a ball and write with both hands.
  10. Greg Harris was probably a bit too good with the Red Sox to count, but I enjoyed his time in Boston. He looked more like a pharmacist or a social studies teacher than a pitcher. I loved the fact he could throw with either hand.
  11. Does anyone remember pitcher Billy Muffett? He was really bad, but was a pitching coach for someone in the late 1960s.
  12. Buddin was very bad, bad, bad. He just wasn't as colorful as Stuart. I felt sorry for Buddin because he was so bad. Stuart seemed to have a misplaced arrogance.
  13. Dick Stuart's 29 errors in 1963 with the Red Sox still stands as the most errors by a first base man. Butch Hobson's 43 errors in the late 1970s are also a record for third base man. He was possibly the worst fielding player I have ever seen. He was also an emotional/drug using minor league manager.
  14. I remember one of his cards after one of the times he changed teams was him in a Pirates uniform without his hat. He had thick greasy hair. There was a humorous article in The New Yorker I believe in the late-1960s. The author saw that Stuart had been placed on waivers late in his career and could be acquired for $1 as was the rule in those days. The author contemplated paying the dollar and having him sit on a bench in his front yard. He was going to have him work with his son on his little league skills. He figured Stuart was not good enough to make his son feel inferiour.
  15. I loved/hated Dick Stuart. He had a unique personality and seemed to take pride in his poor fielding. When he was later in his career and in the National League, Eddie Matthews hit a liner at Stuart playing first base. Stuart actually caught the ball. As Matthews came down the line Stuart commented, "I must be getting old, Eddie. I used to be able to get out of the way of those." Another time at Fenway, Stuart bent down and caught a hotdog wrapper that was blowing across the field. The crowd gave him a standing ovation. He tipped his hat to the crowd.
  16. I remember Mel Parnell joining the Red Sox announcers after Art Gleeson died. I was a fan of his.
  17. Anyone posted about the Yankees signing Andy Pettitt to a minor league deal? I don't see it.
  18. Bill Lee was traded to the Montreal Expos in 1978 for utility infielder Stan Papi, but he was not Canadian. He was from California originally.
  19. I agree about Tiant. I would get goosebumps at games when the crowd would chant, "Looie, Looie, Looie!" He was absolutely loved. I don't agree on Bill Lee, though. He was cool. He was the anti-establishment leader of the Buffalo Heads who many of us identified with. Nettles and the cowardly Mickey Rivers were very bad Yankees. My favorite Yankee was Elston Howard. He was a class guy who later played for the Sox.
  20. How long have you been a fan? I guess it would be sometime in the late 1950s or early 1960s. How did you become a Red Sox fan? The local team. Who is your favorite current Red Sox player? Pedroia Who is your favorite all-time Red Sox player? Yaz Who is your least favorite Red Sox player ever? Probably Roger Clemens (post Red Sox) What state/country do you live in (to see how spread out the fan base is here)? Arkansas What is your favorite memory being a Red Sox fan? Obviously, the 2004 comeback versus the Yankees and WS win. However, Jim Lonborg's pennant clinching win versus the Twins in 1967 extremely was huge. When was the first time you ever went to Fenway Park? Sometime in the late 1950s. Who is your least favorite Yankee player of all-time? Billy Martin, Reggie Jackson, Thurmon Munson, and Alex Rodriguez.
