  1. I believe Epstein is going to need to get more than just a catcher for Garza. He will have to get a package close to what Colorado received for Ubaldo Jimenez which included top pitching prospects Drew Pomeranze and Alex White along with catching prospect Matt McBride. Garza is Epstein's biggest chance to infuse some talent into the Cubs' system. If he doesn't get a Jimenez type haul, he will be criticized in Chicago on radio talk shows and in sports pages. He can't start out his first opportunity by getting less than a massive haul. Even with a slow start, Garza is the best pitcher on the market. In my opinion, he will command more than the Sox can afford to pay.
  2. For a decent starter (even a rental like Dempster), I'd trade Lavarnway in a nano-second.
  3. Whoa. I'd rather the Sox keep the Byrd than D Mac.
  4. He nibbles. I can't stand nibbling.
  5. Jeff Francis opted out of his minor league deal with Cincinnati. After a slow start, I understand he has been pitching better than he has in years. He recently pitched a shutout, but the Reds have used the same five starters all year long. He might be worth a look.
  6. He was good but no where near a HoFer.
  7. Note Seaver, Ryan (seven times), and Gooden would pitch no-hitters with other clubs.
  8. First no-hitter in Met history! Amazing considering Seaver, Ryan, Kooseman, Gooden, et al.
  9. That is right, but he apparently got something right after 1975. He was relatively injury free for decades afterward.
  10. This is why it won't happen. Castro is young, talented, and under control for several years. Also, he is an offensive force at an important position that typically does not provide 200 hit seasons.
  11. I would be shocked if a 22-year-old shortstop with a 200 hit season already under his belt would go for just major league ready prospects. Like the article says, "impact" prospects meaning Mike Trout-like talents. I very much doubt Castro is traded. They will dangle him, but the asking price will be ridiculous.
  12. It will be interesting to see how Epstein handles being a seller after years of being on the other end. There are a lot of expectations of him so he better not mess it up. Garza will bring him a good haul, but I very much doubt Castro goes anywhere. Dempster will be a different story though. He will be a free agent so he will not be under team control after this year. I also believe he is a tougher and better pitcher than Garza.
  13. I remember wondering about Carlton Fisk back in 1974 and '75. He was always injured in those years. I would have never guessed he would have such long and healthy career. There was always a lot of publicity in the 1970s about Johnny Bench playing through broken fingers and toes and other ailments. For a while there, it looked like Fisk was a bit soft. He wasn't.
  14. Right. This is one guy who can possibly make a difference and won't cost the Sox a Will Middlebrooks type prospect.
  15. This was Liriano's line today in his win against Oakland. IP-6.0 H-3 R-0 ER-0 BB-2 K-9
  16. I would like to see Valentine put Middlebrooks at second base. I know he has never played there and might have some trouble with the footwork, but it would replace Pedroia with the best possible bat.
  17. I would say Yastrzemski was one of the toughest players ever. The only time I can remember him being hurt was in (I think) the strike shortened 1972 season. He hurt his knee in a collision at home. The first doctor told him he would need season ending surgery, so Yaz went looking for another opinion. He found one (probably also a fan) who told him to rest it. That is what he did, and I believe that was the only time he was ever on the DL. Yastrzemski was tough and one of my all-time favorites, but Pedroia plays the game harder. Writers, fans, and others sometimes accused Yaz of dogging it. No one will ever say that about Pedroia.
  18. No he doesn't, but then Theo didn't leave him much to play with.
  19. I think Oswalt's people convinced the Ranger's people that the Halladay injury meant action needed to be taken. I don't usually hope anyone other than a Yankee fail, but I don't like Oswalt. If he had anything left, teams would have been bidding frantically for him during the off season. He played this well and turned it into a job. It will be interesting to see it he is washed up or not.
  20. I am really glad the Sox didn't sign him.
