  1. I almost listed Rico Petrocelli at shortstop. He was pretty good defensively. Tony Conigliaro though only started 25 games in center field out of 835 career games. I don't think he qualifies as a center fielder.
  2. No way. He is a leader and one of the few positives. Actually, I am guessing you are just trying to generate some controversy here. This is too bad an idea to believe you are serious.
  3. Ouch! Replace Renteria with Don Buddin and we have a whole new thread.
  4. This is an interesting article from 1940: http://www.chatterfromthedugout.com/cleveland_crybabies.htm
  5. Right! He was a great fielder...even if he was a Yankee.
  6. Waiver wire transactions frequently involve a player to be named because players have to clear through the waiver wire. Sometimes it takes time to clear the player to be named, and sometimes the player to be named is claimed by another team and has to be pulled back..
  7. I would agree that Mientkiewicz was a great fielder, but I wouldn't rank him up there with George Scott or Keith Hernandez.
  8. Yaz was a pretty good first baseman, but a young George Scott may have been one of the best fielding first baseman in baseball ever. He really was good. When he returned to the Sox in 1977, he had put on weight and wasn't nearly as fluid and mobile.
  9. He hit better than .300 several times and had a career average of .285 and a slash line of .352/.415/.767. He could hit.
  10. Btw, Trammel was a very good hitter.
  11. Hitting has traditionally influenced opinions of defensive prowess at most positions, especially in GG voting. I don't think that is true of Burleson, though. He was pretty good in my opinion. He came along at a time when people looked at Concepcion and Belanger as examples of defensive prowess, and he was not in their class. He was good, though. Btw, look at Trammel's offensive numbers. He could hit better than Burleson and most other shortstops of the '70s and 80's.
  12. The Rooster had great glove, good range, and an incredible arm. I remember he'd air it out just to show off his arm on easy plays. He is the only Red Sox shortstop I can remember winning a Gold Glove. My honorable mention would go to Orlando Cabrera.
  13. I can agree with that. Mike Feirs of the Brewers is only 6-4 but has a 1.80 ERA in 13 games. By the end of the season, he could have the numbers to be in the race for the Rookie of the Year award. I can't see knowledgeable voters voting for Harper. He will probably finish second or third because the other candidates play in small markets and don't get the publicity. Harper should finish no higher than third and lower if Feirs continues to put up those numbers.
  14. Rest in peace, Johnny Pesky. You and your family will be in my prayers.
  15. Well, they are trailing 5 teams in the wild card race. They have to beat out 4 of those teams. To do so the Red Sox would have to get incredibly hot and hope 4 teams get very cold. It sounds unlikely, but I'm want to be optimistic. I won't give up on them until they are eliminated.
  16. Harper!?!? If he beats out Wade Miley or Todd Frazier, it is all about hype and total ignorance. Harper has not had a ROY season...especially compared to those two.
  17. P - Gary Peters C - Mike Ryan 1b - George Scott 2b - Dustin Pedroia 3b - Frank Malzone SS - Rick Burleson LF - Carl Yastrzemski CF - Fred Lynn RF - Dwight Evans DH - just kidding Any thoughts or disagreements? I am pretty sure about most of these picks although an argument could be made for pitcher and catcher.
  18. Haha! I shouldn't post after hanging out at my favorite pub. I simply meant to say Podsednick has no value. The Red Sox should have kept Kalish in the majors.
  19. Posednick has a hot wife, but he has limitations. He would be playing somewhere otherwise. There are bad teams that could use him, but if you look at contenders like Cincinnati who need help at the top of their order, I have to question his value. The guy is just not attractive to major league teams.
  20. In my opinion, it is too early to call Buccholz an ace. For many fans, an ace must be dominant and pitch deeply into games for an extended period of time. There is a difference between the number one pitcher on the staff and a true ace. In the AL, I see Verlander, Weaver, Hernandez, Sabathia, and possibly Price as the only true aces.
