  1. I agree. This would be a very good signing. The Sox need to add some power bats and Napoli would be a nice addition.
  2. Shane Victorino is coming off an off year and will see his stock drop. We tend to look at recent production, and lots of players have great walk year and reap the benefits. Adrian Beltre was a very good signing as he was coming off poor recent production. Victorino is a somewhat similar story and just might be the best buy in outfield talent...and the best replacement for Ellsbury if he walks away.
  3. I am surprised and disappointed by the Gomes signing. I don't understand how he fits the design of the team. He is so one dimensional. He is a poor fielding right handed platoon player. And why was he signed for two years? I don't think he is a replacement for Ross since he is a left fielder and would be a disaster in Fenway's right field.
  4. I remember he won a toughest player in baseball poll a couple of years ago.
  5. He used to be a Tampa Bay DH. He was a key participant in a brawl with the Red Sox several years ago. http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/gomesjo01.shtml
  6. He is not a very good fielder and would have to be platooned.
  7. I am not opposed to Cody Ross, but he is not going to make the Red Sox that much better. If he signs for multi-years elsewhere, I will be okay with that, also. His mediocre past, extreme splits, and defensive play are negative factors. The Red Sox should not be in any hurry to re-sign Cody Ross. He is by no means the key to a better 2013.
  8. I am talking about spending money wisely. Investing any amount in a Cody Ross for three years is questionable. He has had a borderline career and is trying to parlay a decent season into a three year contract. Hmmff...I would like him back but not as an answer to building a great team.
  9. This is the kind of thinking that allowed Epstein to get the Sox into the trouble they are in today. Yep, throw the money at Ross. He was .921 home OPS versus .684 away. He also had a significant left-right split as well with a 1.010 OPS vs. lefties and .729 vs. righties. If they overpay for this guy, they will regret it. He has been a career borderline fourth outfielder. I'd like him back on a one or two year contract, but beyond that is just plain stupid. They have Brentz and Bradley on the horizon. This team needs to show logical thinking and not reactionary stupidity.
  10. I did not include the notes on the catching and some other topics. These notes relate to this thread.
  11. Actually, Cleveland's top prospects, Francisco Lindor and Dorssys Paulino, are both shortstops. They will not want Iglesias. Until he proves he can hit, I'm afraid he has little trade value.
  12. I doubt the Guardians will be looking at a question mark like Iglesias. They will surely demand Bogaerts...and I hope the Sox decline.
  13. I also think Hamilton might be a target. Many think he will fail in a big market, but I don't know that will happen. He has beaten the odds before. The Rays left him unprotected when the Cubs chose him in the rule 5 draft. The Reds traded for him, and he had to be kept on their roster despite not having played in some time. He beat the odds and played well. The Reds had doubts and traded him to the Rangers. He has been a superior talent since. I know he is a gamble. He has problems. The Reds and Rangers both took chances on him when common sense said he was a drug addict and likely to fall back into his addictions. He has been a successful big leaguer for five years now, and I think he is worth a gamble.
  14. Hosmer and Gordon are both lefties. I doubt the Red Sox and Royals match up well. The Royals are wanting starting pitching...as are the Red Sox.
  15. Google "mlb off season trade and free agent activity" for any given year, and you will find there is rarely much activity in October and November. In fact, there is generally little significant activity until the major free agents start signing. Teams will then start to size up the market and begin making moves.
  16. Hamilton is a gamble...but a very, very talented gamble. His problems and addiction problems are publicly known. He has been a successful superstar for five years. Drugs and alcohol have not significantly affected his play in that time. Drugs and alcohol can affect a person's performance. Age, injury, psychological issues, and many other problems also can affect a person's performance. Josh Hamilton is the best offensive upgrade I can see available to the Sox.
  17. Beer is in every clubhouse. I grew up in the Boston area and have been to the Dallas/Fort Worth area many times. There is a bar culture in both areas.
  18. Amazingly enough, Hamilton might be the best "buy low" bargain in the history of baseball. The Sox need pitching, but I hope they nab this guy. He is the ultimate five tool player.
  19. Some of us have been around long enough to remember Joe Rudi and Rollie Fingers being sold to the Red Sox in the mid-1970s. The Globe and Record American even posted a picture of them in Red Sox uniforms before Bowie Kuhn stepped in and nixed the deal in the best interest of baseball. Vida Blue had earlier been traded to Cincinnati only to see Kuhn stop the move to protect the integrity of baseball. Maybe the commissioner no longer has the same power, but that is too bad. Baseball needs protection from stupid owners.
  20. Loria should be forced out of baseball. He ruined the Expos and now the Marlins. In the past, the Fish waited until they had at least won a championship before selling out. http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/11/13/its-time-for-bud-selig-to-force-jeffrey-loria-out-of-mlb/
  21. I would love to see the Sox get Stanton but really doubt the Marlins will trade the one player who might draw fans to their fairly new stadium. Even if Stanton says he wants out, what good will it do him? He does not have any leverage to demand a trade. And, as much as I'd love to see the Sox get Stanton, I'd hate to see the Marlins do such a thing to their fans and to all of baseball. It is a shame what they have already done by trading away Reyes, Johnson, Buehrle, and Buck. They shouldn't be permited to create further shame to the game. Lorie should be ousted at this point.
  22. Buehrle has always been a soft tosser but never as soft as he tosses now. His last two years in the AL saw his k/9 rate drop below 5 per 9. He predictably did better last year in the NL, but the AL East is tough on soft tossers. Burhle has relied on control and location for years. He has also relied on mid-80s in the AL. When he starts to lose mph from mid 80s, the team that owns that contract will be in trouble. Btw, I am on the road trying to type on my phone.
  23. I think the Jays could very well regret taking on both Buhrle and Reyes. One is a soft tossed getting softer, and the other is often injured.
  24. Haha! Good points but it probably has more to do with Lovullo being a damn good drinking buddy...which is not at all a bad thing in a working relationship.
  25. He is a viable trading chip at a position that is wanting for some measure of quality/potential.
