  1. This is at least encouraging.
  2. I would much, much rather the Sox go after Josh Johnson than an over-weight, on the way down Hanley Ramirez. The Red Sox can score runs, make errors. and have an unhappy clubhouse without that overpaid headcase. Btw, the Dodgers took on his whole contract. It was assumed the Marlins would have to take on a chunk of it to get rid of him.
  3. Not really. De La Torre is under-sized (5'9" 175 pound) and was a minor league free agent. Zack Stewart was a third round pick by Cincinnati. Last year, he has pitched a one-hit shutout against the Twins. He has been traded for Scott Rolen, Edwin Jackson, and Kevin Youkilis in the last three years. Imho, De La Torre is not close to Zack Stewart.
  4. The Red Sox are 2.5 games out of the Wild Card spot. Players are coming off the DL. Why would they be sellers?
  5. The market on Dempster appears to have dried up. Teams are losing interest because Theo apparently is expecting to exploit his early success. Teams are not buying into the greed.
  6. I think the Sox may be sellers so they can be buyers. Youkilis brought Zack Stewart who has been traded for Scott Rolen one year and Edwin Jackson the next. Stewart could be a trade chip. I can see the Sox trading Cody Ross for a parcel of prospects or getting into a three-way deal to trade for starting pitching. I doubt very much the Sox will become complete sellers when they are within striking distance of the wild card.
  7. I have seen a couple of specualtions (one from Gammons) that Lee could be traded, but certainly wouldn't say, "everything I've heard." Even if the Phillies did see fit to trade Lee, I doubt the Red Sox can compete with Texas (among others) for Lee's services. Texas can start a package with the number 4 prospect in all of baseball, Jurckson Profar, who is blocked by Elvis Andrus. They can also add number 22 prospect in Martin Perez. The Red Sox can't compete with teams willing to deal top prospects.
  8. And why would they eat any of his salary? They are not desperate to unload him.
  9. I don't see anyone wanting to bring on either Beckett or Lester. Why would they? I assume most teams can fill the bottom of their rotations with comparable inconsistency.
  10. I am afraid the Sox will have to overpay for Garza. There are too many teams in on him because he is under control through next season. Also, the top rentals, Greinke and Hamels, are just that, rentals, and could sign extensions with their current teams which would remove them from the market. Dempster looks to be going to the Dodgers. Garza will be the top priority for teams like Texas and Detroit. I would rather they explore the market for someone under the radar like Edinson Volquez of San Diego who is also under control through 2013. He walks a lot of batters but has the potential to return to a top of the rotation starter he was before TJ surgery. I'm not saying he would be my first choice, but in a season of question, he might be a wise choice.
  11. The Red Sox are 1.5 games out of the second Wild Card spot. Ellsbury, Crawford, and Buchholz are back. I bet the management definitely will try to pull this season together. That said, I wouldn't expect too many teams contending for only the Wild Card to be sending top prospects away in trades.
  12. Against Oakland in a loss. I'm not sure he will still be a true buy low candidate at this point. IP- 8.0 H-4 R-4 ER-3 BB- 1 SO-15
  13. I think there is a chance we will see a change in the nature of the deadline deal this season. The added wild card team means there will be more teams contending and possibly a change in the way teams approach trades. For the last 30 years, we have seen salary dumps with teams unloading their high salaried players, or teams trade players within a year or so of free agency for prospects. We might see a different pattern this year. I wouldn't be surprised to see contending teams trade within themselves for equal talent and needs. If Lester is traded, I believe he will be packaged with perhaps Mike Aviles for something like Rafael Furcal and Lance Lynn of St. Louis. Perhaps Homer Bailey and Todd Frazier for Lester and Sweeny. Those trades are just guesses, but I think we will see a different type of deadline deal this year because of the added wild card team.
  14. Whoa! If it is due in six days, you better get going on it. I am a retired secondary teacher, so I don't know a lot about elementary school kids. I am guessing all nine genres have to be on one grade level. Do these genres have to be nine different lessons or projects the students are to create?
  15. Thank goodness Roy Oswalt didn't want to play in Boston. He gave up 9 runs tonight in less than 5 innings.
  16. The same thing was being said about Carlton Fisk after injuries limited his play in 1974 and 1975 to an average of 65 games per year. He ended his career as the all-time leader in games caught.
  17. In the last three years, Zach Stewart has now been the key prospect traded for Scott Rolen, Edwin Jackson, and Kevin Youkilis. He apparently has some value like Gio Gonzalez (traded as a prospect for Jim Thome, then Freddy Garcia, then Nick Swisher) and Carlos Gonzalez (as a prospect traded for Dan Haren then Matt Holliday) once did. At the trade deadline, he gives the Sox a prospect of some value. I just wish they had received at least one more for Youk rather than a utility infielder/outfielder.
  18. Being a Red Sox fan was part of growing up in the Boston area. When I was a kid in the 50s and 60s, the Sox played a lot of day games. I remember playing outside and running into my house or any one of my friends' houses periodically to check on the score of games. The game was on the radio and everyone was listening. I remember going in our back door and my mom being very upset about Billy Monbouquette's pitching. All during lunch, she griped about his pitching. In the late 1960s, Bobby Orr brought a new passion to New England. The '80s and Larry Bird brought a new era. Until Brady, the Pats were always last.
  19. With all the other contenders needing pitching, I doubt the Phillies go for a journeyman outfielder, a fourth outfielder, and a mere prospect. The Prospect would have to be a 1 through 10 which the Sox don't have.
  20. Whoa! This reminds me of the first time I saw Carlton Fisk in a White Sox uniform. It just looks totally and completely wrong. I know now I will miss Youk.
  21. I just got home and have not had time to read all the posts, but I am very, very pleased with a return of Zack Stewart. This is a guy who was a Cincinnati third round pick. A player who was the main piece in a package for Scott Rolen who was hitting .330 at the time. He was traded for Edwin Jackson last season. He pitched a one-hitter last season against the Twins (I believe). He is a very decent return for an injury prone hitter in apparent decline. And before anyone questions all the trades, look at Gio Gonzalez. He was traded from the White Sox to the Phillies, back to the White Sox, then to Oakland before being traded to Washington. I like it.
