  1. Also on Lee, from Gordon Edes: What is intriguing is the Phillies are now at least listening to offers for left-hander Cliff Lee, who has $50 million left on his contract after 2013, with a club option of $27.5 million in 2016. The Phillies had been adamant they wouldn’t move Lee, but the Sox are one of the few teams that (A) can afford him and ( have the prospects to make such a deal a reality. Lee was scratched from his scheduled start Saturday with what the Phillies said was a stiff neck. Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said Friday he's keeping an open mind on Lee and numerous other Philadelphia players who might generate interest at the deadline. "I never put any real absolutes on anything," Amaro told ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick. "Although we don't have any desire to move a guy like that because we view him as someone who will be key to our future, I am a businessperson as well and I'll be a good listener."
  2. Per Jerry Crasnick tonight: '@jcrasnick: Ruben Amaro Jr. said he has no desire to trade Lee because he sees him as part of #phillies future, but is keeping open mind. "If teams come at us and suggest things, I’m not going to turn off the faucet and stop listening,’’ Amaro said. #phillies This is a much different tune than he was singing pre ASB.
  3. And a bottom 5 farm system (per Keith Law)
  4. Very curious as to how people think the Phillies will compete next year with virtually the same exact team as they have right now?
  5. Wow this is just one of those games where we hit line drive bullets that are right at people and they hit 27 hoppers that somehow get through
  6. Can't say I would be surprised if this team ended up winning 86 games this year and had a disgusting 2nd half. They look nothing like the team of the first half. Blunder after blunder after blunder. Unfocused, which is extremely surprising
  7. Not even sure what this is insinuating.
  8. Come on SR. None of those guys can hit mistake pitches like WMB.
  9. Honest Predictions: 1. The Sox trade for Jake Peavy, giving up Ranaudo, Brentz, and Mookie Betts (edited). 2. The Sox call up Rubby De La Rosa and put him in the bullpen. 3. Bogaerts gets called up on August 20th because Iglesias hits .176/.227/.252 from 7/26 - 8/14, continuing his downward spiral. Iglesias becomes the super utility guy. 4. The final series at Baltimore will decide both the fate of the Red Sox (in the hunt for the AL East champion), the Orioles (in the hunt for the 2nd WC slot), and the Rays (battling the Sox for the AL East crown). 2011 will NOT repeat itself.
  10. Not sure that he would make it through waivers this year.
  11. Til August 1st man, you know I am.
  12. This is the 2nd time this season that someone has predicted an L for the Sox on the gamethread. WTF?!?!
  13. The Phillies are 8 out of the NL East and 9.5 out of the 2nd WC. I'm not going to believe the Sox don't come down with Lee until he's still a Phillie on 8/1. But, in the case that he is not traded to the Red Sox, I am very curious about this guy Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez. Has anyone heard anything about him? I would be very interested in seeing what you can get from him because he's not going to cost prospects at all.
  14. Bogaerts went 3-3 yesterday with a walk and two doubles. He's now hitting .273/.377/.492/.869, 8 HR, 5 2B in 37 G at AAA. As a 20 year old. Got to wonder how much longer it's going to be before he's up.
  15. Just to be clear, just because I think it's a "bridge year" doesn't mean that I don't think we can make a very deep playoff push. All I am saying is that there are much better teams on the horizon, and very soon at that. The Sox did a great job of turning this team into a playoff and WS contender while letting the prospects continue to develop. It's a bridge year in that we have some serious talent on the cusp and when that talent arrives, those will be the teams that you can mortgage the future a bit more for short term success, but not this year. The fact that we're competitive this year is the gravy, not the mashed taters. The taters arrive next year.
  16. Exactly. In 8 years, $13.75mm AAV for a 2B is going to be average pay.
  17. Dan Szymbroski's projections on Pedroia's seven-year, $100 million extension values him perfectly. Year WAR VALUE (Millions) 2015 4.0 $21 2016 3.5 $19 2017 3.2 $17 2018 2.6 $14 2019 2.2 $12 2020 1.6 $10 2021 1.0 $7 TOTAL 18.1 $100 No. You couldn't get Pedroia for 5 years. He would never take a 5 year extension when Cano, who is a year older, is about to get an 8 year/200mm deal on the market. You've got Pedroia for an AAV of 13.75mm. That's pennies on the dollar for someone like him. His agents told him it was "lunacy" to take the deal he took. Being opposed to this deal is ridiculous. He left millions on the table because he wanted to win. end thread.
  18. I have concerns about Peavy as well, but when he's good he can be a very good pitcher. My problem is that it feels like we're covering a band aid with a band aid, i.e. covering an injured player with another injury prone player. It can go very bad very fast. Fortunately Workman has shown that he can really pitch, at least so far, so he's a good #6/7 man. If the Sox acquire a SP, who the heck do we move when Buchholz comes back? My best guess would be a 6 man rotation or Dempster goes to the pen? He's thrown there before, and you're certainly not going to put Lester, Buch, Peavy, Lackey, or Doubront in the pen. 6 man rotation to save bullets for the PS, but do you want to limit the starts that Buch, Lackey, Doubront, and Peavy gives you?
  19. That's exactly what this season is - a bridge year. Just because Cherrington has been able to put together a very competitive team, that doesn't take away from the overall picture and end goal, which is to build a consistent successful team around homegrown talents like Bogaerts, Bradley, Cecchini, Owens, RDLR, Ranaudo, Barnes, etc. Obviously some of those will fizzle out, but regardless, this is not the team that Cherrington is building toward.
  20. Ah - When I think of Jeckyl and Hyde, I think you mean flip flopping on opinions. I see now, though.
  21. Well I'm definitely emotional when I watch the games, but I'm still not sure where the flip flopping comes from?
  22. No way. Delmonico isn't a top 100 prospect on anybody's board. It would be much closer to a Bryce Brentz deal. The Sox system is stacked. Look at the Brandon Jacobs trade. He was the Sox #34 or #36 prospect, and bolted to #8 in the ChiSox system.
  23. Been busy lately, so I haven't had much time to post. Plus, every thread I read contains ~65% personal attacks, ~35% actual baseball talk, so there's that too. But mostly because I've been busy.
  24. Because it's a game thread. If you want my non-reactionary posts, you'll need to look at the other threads. This thread is where I go nuts. But as far as the Jeckyl and Hyde, I'm not sure what you're talking about? The post regarding the aggressive baserunning was intended to be about Butterfield. Ortiz's blunder was completely on himself, not Butterfield, IMO, since the play was in front of him. But I don't know where else I've ever been jeckyl and hyde.
  25. Take the good with the bad. I personally love aggressive baserunning
