  1. Read an article on mlbtraderumors that said several things I have been thinking. The Red Sox benefit greatly if Tanaka isn't posted. The Yankees get stuck with Ervin or Garza for 90-100 million. Neither of those guys even replace Pettite. It also makes Dempster look like a steal at 13 million and more teams may get desperate-- especially with teams like the Twins overpaying for starters left and right and Scherzer and possibly Price staying put.
  2. I'm surprised at your response. Generally your opinion on prospects has been to sell high on overrated prospects... something that the Diamondbacks have failed miserably at in these two trades. If they traded them at their respective peaks, they may have received much higher compensation.
  3. I don't know what shocks me more... my complete stupidity today, or the the fact that they traded Bauer and weren't the team in the trade who received Choo.
  4. For the second season in a row, the Diamondbacks traded a top 5 pitching prospect in all of baseball for an outfield bat. Wow.
  5. Gutierez is a guy I brought up yesterday. Before he got hurt, he showed 20/20 type potential with top notch center field defense, and a RH bat. He also had the limitations of playing in Seattle. He's definitely a lightning-in-the-bottle type, but he did put up 6 WAR in a season once.
  6. Of all the big-money free agents, Choo is the guy I'd want. .390 OBP FOR HIS CAREER, .425 this year, with 20 SB speed. How many players out there have a .400+ OBP with speed? Most of the guys that get on base that frequently are big bats that are pitched around and clog the basepaths. He's probably best suited for LF, but he can spot in CF, and could survive in RF for a season. He has bad splits, but still manages to get on base consistently. He's been healthy, and isn't that old. I also think he is significantly better than the players in the 2014 free agent class, a year where the Red Sox are going to shave 16 million off from Lackey... and don't even lose him on the roster.
  7. Doh. Thanks for keeping me honest.
  8. Tigers are the frontrunners right now. Man, the Red Sox must really have some faith in Bradley. Gutierrez seems like the next option on the list. He would fill a similar role, and could be a lightning in a bottle type. A few short years ago, he was nearly was a 20/20 guy in Seattle with top notch defense in CF. Doesn't it seem like we see a TON of RHH come from Seattle to Boston and explode? Mike Carp and Adrian Beltre come to mind immediately.
  9. Henry's glowing endorsement of Crawford really made a bad situation worse.
  10. Depth pushes young starters too. Guarantee a guy a spot like Doubront and he gets fat.
  11. 7/110 + 20 remember and that's the minimum for a guy who has never thrown a pitch in the majors.
  12. If he can be had for around 3/30 to 3/36, he makes a good amount of sense. Worse case scenario he's tradebait midseason.
  13. I felt that Doc deserved his own thread. Two time Cy Young, 8 time all-star, and always the most fearsome opponent in the AL East. What a career, its a shame he didn't have 6 more years in him to try and fight for 300.
  14. Neither Snyder or Holt had significant at bats last year. 50 a piece.
  15. From what I understand, a third baseman generally has to throw from the right in order to throw out a runner at first. If they are throwing from the left, they have to recoil first, losing a valuable second or two. Eric Chavez is a rare example in that he throws righty but hits lefty. Are there others LHH 3B out there? I just don't think its exactly an easy platoon to fill. As to the other points, time to agree to disagree.
  16. Aren't Lh 3b uncommon ? Finding quality replacements really isn't as easy as you make it seem. Cite 2011 all you want but the 2010 Red Sox didn't make the playoffs because they had injuries to position players and couldn't replace them. The Red Sox have one more starter than they did last year and an extra year of seasoning for several young arms. Plus Workman looks legit. They have depth at sp but none at if or of.
  17. Beside which point? The Red Sox have significantly worse depth on their bench this year than last year, and none of the available free agents fix that under 30-40 million. That's the point.
  18. Maybe that's because you're a Red Sox fan, and Ben is mostly done. Kemp, Headley, and Price seem to be the big names hanging out there.
  19. Yet he was still leaps and bounds better than AAAA slobs like Synder and Holt.
  20. Iglesias was serviceable there. Snyder only got 50 AB, and Holt 59.
  21. They had very good depth at all positions last year, and it worked out. That's why it seems so important.
  22. Your solution was to sign Drew, and then trade away valuable depth in WMB. I want good depth at ALL positions. You're right though, the trade isn't happening -- it just seemed like a very good fit for both teams.
  23. If someone gets hurt, or Bradley turns out to need another year, he adds 4 wins. With money to add significant IF depth, it could add 2-3 more wins. Peavy was worth 2.4 fWar last year, in a year when he was healthy.
  24. This all started with a comment I made on the Peavy for Gardner trade. My opinion is that is a pretty fair deal, although maybe the Red Sox need to eat some money there. In that (clearly not going to happen) scenario, Gardner at 4 million, snag Drew at 3/30 million. Your rotation is Lester, Lackey, Buchholz, Doubront, Dempster. The lineup is good, and has significant depth in the outfield, infield, catcher, relief. Maybe they might go after someone like a Johann Santana to stash in the minors and hope they catch lightning in the bottle and he gets healthy. That kind of depth isn't there right now.
  25. Let me try to change your perspective on this. If Buchholz/Peavy gets hurt, they get replaced by Workman, Webster or Barnes. If Ortiz's ankle acts up, Pedroia breaks another bone in his hand, or Victorino breaks his ribs against the RF wall, who do you replace those guys with? The lack of depth works both ways. There are significantly more talented pitchers in the minors than there are IF/OF. This team has much more depth to sustain injuries in the rotation than in the lineup.
