  1. Sounds like the Cubs are going to go all out for him. Yankees might too. It is going to be one hell of a bidding war.
  2. I always find it sleazy when players fight over small percentages with their former team. If a team treated you well, and offers you somewhere remotely close to the highest offer, why not take your original team rather? The money is important, but 5-10% increase in salary is not worth destroying your legacy. With a guy like Ellsbury, the reports seem to claim that the Red Sox weren't going to offer him anything close to what he would make with the Yankees, so I can't fault him for that whatsoever... but he must know that he destroyed his reputation in Boston.
  3. Is it just me, or has the AL East stuck with the status quo this year? The Yankees bought a few bats, but lost enough bats to offset it, and replaced Logan with Thornton. They also lost a HoF fame reliever, and another borderline HOF candidate starter.... but will probably replace both. The Orioles and Jays still don't have pitching. The Rays still don't have hitting. The Red Sox stuck with the guys they have.
  4. I sincerely thank you for leaving the big man from up north from this skeptical post, especially this time of year.
  5. The Cubs have been stockpiling toptier talent in a big way. Stockpiling top 5 draft picks like Bryant. Snagging top prospects in trades like Edwards. Pulling in the top international free agent like Jimeniz. They snagged Soler from the free agent market. They aren't going for mid-tier talent... they're going for top-tier potential guys. They'll market Samardjaza to other teams until they get a real major league piece. Sounds like they will be hard on Tanaka too, those are the kinds of guys they want... young, controllable, high-high potential. We'll see what happens, but so far it sounds like they're doing what they're supposed to do while waiting for those contracts to expire, and the real talent to arrive from all those low-low draft picks. Theo is building a core that he expects to win a world series, but we'll see.
  6. Just read a crazy article -- http://nypost.com/2013/12/21/yankees-roster-is-one-for-the-ages/ Despite losing Mariano and Pettite, the Yankees actually managed to get older this offseason.
  7. Choo is a .300 average 400 OBP guy with 20/20 skills, who is meh defensively. Bradley has been a .270, .370 OBP with 15/15 skills in the minors... but may end up being exceptionally defensively in a key position. It depends on how much you value defense, and if Bradley fills his potential. Choo will probably end up being better, but really, how many .400 OBP guys are even out there?
  8. As I said, the options aren't great.
  9. Choo to the Rangers for 7 years. More details oncoming.
  10. AAaaand Choo signs a 7 year deal with the Rangers.
  11. The Phillies went from being a top-notch franchise to being one of the worst They overpaid for several players, drained their farm with trade after trade, and could potentially have a personality issue in the clubhouse if they don't start winning. For the next few offseasons, I hope Ben and the armchair GMs as well take a hard look at what could have happened to the Red Sox if the Dodgers didn't save this franchise.
  12. I ran through the list of the best defensive RHH RF that aren't going to be completely untouchable. As I said, the options aren't great. The scenario I could see is if if the Rangers go hard after Choo and want to drop Rios's payroll. They're paying 13 million-ish after the White Sox offset 1 million, which seems like a ton of money for a corner outfielder with a .278/.324/.443/.767 career line approaching his mid 30s.
  13. If the Red Sox do in fact make a trade from their SP depth, their biggest need seems to be a RHH outfielder that can play respectable RF. I am just skimming through reasonable RF targets, but there doesn't seem to be much there. Cody Ross and Gerardo Parra are a platoon in Arizona...with the Diamondbacks hard after pitching, maybe there is something there. Cody Ross would be a great fit for the team if the management had treated him a bit better last offseason. Chris Denorfia has one year left with the Padres at 2 million. Three team trade potential? Seems unlikely, but who knows. Alex Rios is another thought... maybe the Rangers go hard after Choo and might be willing to move him?
  14. I think the scale has tilted away from them though. They have a big financial advantage, but not nearly as monstrous an advantage as it was even 5-10 years ago. They used to be the premier team, but in a few years from now, are they going to be any different from the Celtics? Storied winners of the past leading their sport in titles, but in 5 years from now, who knows, maybe the reckless spending catches up with them, and they become like the Celtics of the 90s and early 2000s.
  15. But the same thing happens for the Red Sox. How many times have we called Baltimore's stadium "Red Sox South" or said "We'll see you in the playoffs for our home games in Tampa" ? When the Cubs played the Red Sox at Fenway, those were premium games with packed stadiums. We'll see the same effect if the Mets or Cubs were actually good teams.
  16. You know what would be even better for the league? The other big money cities to have good teams. The Yankees already have a fanbase... but a Cubs or Mets World Series would do much bigger things for the game. What value would another Yankee World Series have for the game? It'll just annoy the other teams, and the same annoying Yankee fans would avoid watching the playoffs till the championship series, and be mildly entertained when they win, because it has become such a novelty for them.
  17. Instead of having 4 starting position players, a DH, and a utility infielder, you remove the utility infielder for Drew, make sure they all get enough reps at one of the other positions, and then rotate them. It isn't all that complicated.
  18. Instead of having 4 starting position players, a DH, and a utility infielder, you remove the utility infielder for Drew and rotate them. It isn't all that complicated.
  19. I just don't see the problem in having 5 players to fill 4 spots. One of them is going to get hurt eventually.
  20. Maybe, but relievers that have been consistently effective like he has are hard to find. If Logan and Lopez got big deals, I see no reason why he couldn't atleast pull in 1/6.
  21. The White Sox signed Scott Downs for 1/4 million. Is it just me, or is that a huge bargain? Seems like a steal for lefty who has hovered between 1.50 and 3.00 ERA for the last few years. Worst case scenario you take his career .500 OPSA lefties any day of the week, but the guy has been a setup stud for long time. 37 is the new 30 for closers this year anyway.
  22. The Red Sox have had such a revolving door at shortstop that Drew makes more sense than some of us realize. Bogaerts is the real deal... but the question is, will he be the real deal at SS or at 3B? Post-concussion Drew was a .800 OPS hitter with top notch defense at SS. He also showed he's healthy. I also don't see any reason why Drew and WMB can't coexist.
  23. Right now, the most expensive part of the team is their starting pitching. Next year, they lose Lackey's 16 mill, Peavy's 14 mill, Dempster's 13 mill, and maybe Lester's 12 million. Tanaka is the logical place for them to re-invest, even if they see major strides from the young arms.
  24. The Eagles planning to offer Tanaka a NPB record-setting offer to stay in Japan. The Red Sox will be in a much better position to bid for him next year. The trade market for Dempster will also improve quite a bit -- reports seem to say that they want to trade either him or Peavy. I expect atleast one of Garza/Arroyo/Santana to sign in the next 24 hours.
