  1. And both the Cubs and Rays WILL be blown away by someone. The Yankees and Dodgers will probably end up with two of the big money players. There will be plenty of teams still desperate for starting pitching afterwards. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Cubs sign Tanaka -- breaking open the FA market and building Samardzija's value -- and turn around and trade Sam for a quality prospect and winning big this offseason. Theo has been extremely deliberate with his moves, and it just seems like something he would do.
  2. The Red Sox's offseason isn't over yet. They still might move a pitcher for an RF, but it seems that the entire SP market is stuck because of Tanaka. What big pitchers have moved? Garza, Arroyo, Ubaldo, Santana are still on the market. Price, Samardzija still have yet to be traded. Things could pick up very quickly.
  3. He can still get another massive contract after this one is over because he is still only 26, and he has an opt-out option after year 5. The 300 million dollar contract was for 12 years, so he will have a good chance to break past that figure with 5 extra years of his own time.
  4. I didn't think there was a "probably" in there. Sounded set in stone to me. What a great player, cut short by concussion issues.
  5. May he have a short, fruitless, and humiliating return.
  6. One report I read said the Yanks might hold onto him just in case he juices again and gets caught. Will he still take a spot on the 40man ?
  7. As s***** as Arod's full year sentence is for Red Sox fans hoping the Red Sox won't be able to afford Tanaka, it may be better than we think. At 38 years old, he lost most of the season with an injury. At 39, he will be banned from baseball. At age 40, he will need to come back -- WITHOUT STEROIDS-- and the Yankees will still be on the hook for 3 more years. I don't think he will risk his livelihood at this point -- another steroid ban could cost him 40-50 million. So we're talking about a guy who hasn't played a full season since age 37 trying to make a comeback at age 40.
  8. 108 million? That's the starting point in negotiations.
  9. After all the money the Rangers spent to improve their offense, they lose a key piece in Derrek Holland before the year begins. That's baseball in a nutshell.
  10. Alex Rodriguez suspended 162 games.
  11. If the Red Sox get anywhere with Tanaka, it will be because they get creative with a contract. They could do a few of things -- a low AAV contract with plenty of years that brands him as a Red-Sox-for-Life, a short term contract with high AAV that lets Tanaka get back onto the market for a monster deal in a few years, or a contract with an opt-out option. I don't think Tanaka will take any of them -- he seems primed for a 6/120 to 7/150 contract.
  12. I'd take Lester over Tanaka too, but if Lester is looking for 200 million, I'd rather ages 26-32 of Tanaka over ages 32-40 of Lester.
  13. Ubaldo, Santana and Garza are looking at 80-100 million this year. I would not surprised to see the total cost to be up to 120-140 for MT.
  14. Cherrington has been keeping tabs on Tanaka. It would make an interesting offseason if the Red Sox signed Tanaka to raise up the price on Dempster/Peavy. We seem to have all assumed he isn't coming here, but if Lester won't agree to a reasonable contract, maybe he makes sense. It seems like it would have a domino effect. The Yankees, Orioles and Blue Jays are ALL looking for new starting pitching right now, and there is a pile of other teams looking hard for starters.
  15. ...which tells you just boring this offseason has been.
  16. Rumor has it that the magic number for Arod to accept punishment is a 100 game suspension. That comes down to around 10 million still on the luxury cap for the Yankees.
  17. 16 didn't vote for Maddux? Fire them all, they don't deserve to have jobs.
  18. "Starting pitchers are still easy to find on the open market" Clearly, this article is written by a Yankee fan.
  19. Can the Yankees just sign Tanaka already and call it a day? This offseason has been moving way too slowly.
  20. Hamilton was the top prospect in their organization last year, and ranked #20 in the majors by BA. He is their Jackie Bradley. I don't think they would trade away an extremely valuable starter to replace him without giving him a real chance to make it in the majors. It isn't like he failed in the majors -- .900 OPS in 13 games all at the age of 22.
  21. Who was cherry-picking? He didn't have a single down year in UZR/150... he is mediocre in center field. Maybe he's a gold glove LF, but certainly not CF. The real problem is that he is a speed guy who is losing speed. He's hitting his 30s, coming off a season ending in an oblique injury, lowest career SB totals and highest CS%. He also loses home runs going to any other park. Gardner definitely still has value, but the Reds are in win-now mode, and I see absolutely no reason why they would make that trade. Also, Homer Bailey definitely gets a QO and arbitration pick, but Gardner may very well not.
  22. A 200 inning, 200 strikeout pitcher with an ERA in the mid 3's is worth a ton. Gardner is the kind of player that looked very valuable based on WAR, UZR, and SB, but he seemed to have lost a step in 2013. Mediocre CF defense, 25% CS, his lowest career stolen bases, and a Yankee team trying to get rid of him? Gardner is a good player, but he isn't worth what he was in 2011, and certainly isn't worth a very solid #2 starting pitcher.
  23. I knew there was a reason why Jerry refuses to leave his hotel in Kansas City. He was talking about it this year... first time in so many years of broadcasting that he actually went into the city.
  24. I will never forget Beckett's last year with the Red Sox. May 10th, 2012. I've got really good seats -- which for me is a rarity. Through 3 innings, Beckett had already given up 7. July 6th against the Yankees at Fenway... they put up 5 runs in the 1st inning. The Red Sox get right back in it with 5 runs of their own... but he still lost the lead. I've never seen a pitcher so completely apathetic. All he wanted to do was get in his hundred pitches, take a shower, and get out of there. He's never really recovered... but as soon as the Red Sox got rid of him, their entire team did a 180. It was no coincidence.
  25. I would like to see A-rod not lose any games, but be banned from the playoffs for the rest of his career, and have an official ARod Asterix™ next to any of his career statistics. Its win-win for everyone involved. Well, except for the Yankees, and A-rod, but who cares about them?
