  1. Nope, he went to the Tigers. The White Sox got Avisail Garcia. Also, Mike Olt for injury-ridden Garza happened just last year. Teams haven't gotten smarter -- with the new wild card spots, more teams are going to be still in it, and fighting for a spot, thus trade targets are more valuable.
  2. The real problem for the FO is that Jon Lester is ironclad. You can't smear the guy. They went out of the way to protect him from the beergate smearing, and there is absolutely nothing else there. Also, teams unwilling to part with a bluechip for a guy like Jon Lester will not go anywhere in the playoffs. The White Sox traded a year and a half of overpriced Peavy for a top 100 prospect, and the Cubs traded half a year of Garza for one as well. I see absolutely no reason why the Red Sox can't do the same with Lester -- those guys aren't even in the same class as him.
  3. Bud Norris just hit the DL, so even the Orioles may be vulnerable and have to throw out a lessor arm into that series.
  4. I think Lester mentioned the original contract offer of 4/70 to his teammates, and it went from him to a teammate who gave the number to the media. I would not be surprised if that is what is happening here -- someone saw him go into Ben's office or heard something and then leaked it. I also believe that now is a good time to reopen negotiations from the Red Sox side, because they do have leverage here because of the trade deadline. I simply refuse to believe that the Red Sox are not ready to give Jon Lester a fair deal.
  5. The Chicago Cubs have the 29th best offense in the league, with an average .663 OPS. Jake Arietta has a 4.84 career ERA. On the other hand, the Red Sox are 20th in the league with a .693 OPS, and Jake Peavy has a 4.93 ERA this year, and doesn't have a win since April 25th. My guess? This game will be a battle of the bullpens, and Anthony Rizzo will hit atleast one home run. Sox win 6-5 in the 10th.
  6. Bradley with yet another huge defensive play.
  7. Come on Nava, just put it into play.
  8. Betances coming in the 6th inning? Interesting.
  9. The Red Sox are re-engaging in contract talks with Lester. There is no word on if he is receptive to re-opening talks. Supposedly the Red Sox raised the value of the initial contract. They do have some leverage here -- accept a deal, or get traded.
  10. I've never seen that before... rundown fielder's choice score.
  11. Pedroia with 3 hits already. That's two consecutive 3-hit games games. Heating up?
  12. Mookie with a hit. Sky is blue.
  13. So tired about hearing about these Yankee vets. We heard about Rivera all 2013, and now we're getting the Jeter love-fest. Egh.
  14. Well, this game got out of hand quickly.
  15. Holt with some nice baserunning. Two bases on a shallow outfield hit?
  16. Are the Red Sox leading the league in double plays?
  17. Drew has received a lot of attention on Talksox, but fellow qualifying-offer decliner Kendry Morales has a .587 OPS, and he's a poor defensive first baseman. I'm no superstar baseball agent, but here is a tip : if your guys miss spring training, they're going to suck for a month or two in the majors.
  18. I have plenty of other things to do tonight, but I need o stop in for the first at bat of Mookie-Madness. Let the home runs fall.
  19. It probably didn't make sense to pull him from AA straight into a game against a CY Young in Yankee Stadium.
  20. Sooner than we thought. Mookie-Madness hits Yankee Stadium today.

The other thing to consider is that the Red Sox can be very flexible because of the cost of many of their players. They could potentially be buyers in June/July, and if it doesn't stick, they can still be sellers on the waiver wire. Peavy at $15 million, Drew at $10 million, Buchholz at 8 + 12 million, AJ at $10 million. Even trade targets like Alex Rios and Cuddyer are expensive enough that they can be passed through waivers and moved to the right teams for mid-value pieces.

6 games back on the wildcard. Plenty of pitching depth and plenty of infield and catching depth in the minors. Brock Holt is a monster, and Rubby has been awesome. The next four series are Cubs, O's, White Sox, Astros. Besides the Orioles, those are all very bad teams. They need two more outfielders, and the Victorino setback is a big loss. Alex Rios is on the market, maybe if the Sox pick up the tab, Felix could pull him in. Just get a little better on offense, that's all they need.
  23. 1) Money. 2) Inexperience 3) Peavy's pride.
  24. When you give up zero walks, it really doesn't hurt you that much.
