  1. Felix Doubront released by the Cubs. What happened to him? I wonder if the Red Sox might be interested.
  2. There is a new obsession in baseball to trade good players every 3-4 years. When you have a former MVP with elite defense at 2B, who is mostly healthy, and still giving 4 WAR a year, why worry? Unless they can get an ace for him -- and they won't -- I say absolutely not.
  3. Also, while the Red Sox are 7th overall, Houston has two picks before them and won't select Aiken again.
  4. Mookie has the highest OPS in all of spring training right now. 1.435. Mike Trout comes in at #2 with 1.320.
  5. The Rockies dropped Chacin. He's a groundball pitcher that has pitched to 200 IP/ 3ish ERAs before. Extra depth on this team would be lovely.
  6. I have heard this argument, but we need to see how both Nap and Craig play this year. Napoli has a career .850 OPS -- people seem to forget that he's among the top 20 hitters in the majors. I understand that a 33 year old catcher like Nap might as well be a 40 year old first basemen, but he seems okay so far, and the sleep apnea surgery may be a boon for his production. Apparently this has gone unnoticed, but Napoli has a 1.100 OPS this spring.
  7. I have never understood the Lackey trade. This team would look a lot better with Lackey pitching the first game in April, and the outfield situation would make a lot more sense without worrying about what do with Allen Craig.
  8. Hey King of Talksox, open the damn league.
  9. MLB.com has Aiken at #6 and five-tool outfielder Daz Cameron at #7. I am surprised to see that he is the son of former Red Sox Mike Cameron.
  10. Aiken might be the kind of guy the Red Sox go for. It seems like they always go after high risk, high ceilings players. Sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn't. They can buy mid-tier talent, but you need to go to the draft to find franchise players.
  11. I think Felgar and Maz's MookGate is ridiculous. I also am glad to have found a reason to use the term "Mookgate".
  12. The Red Sox won't sell low on Bradley. He is one batting adjustment away from being a 2-3 WAR player at low cost. He also has options. Denard Span might be looking for a 60 million dollar contract next year-- if Bradley's offense turns around, many teams would prefer a cheap 25 year old with a similar skillset.
  13. I lost track of him this spring -- how's his fastball? He used to be throw in the upper 90s -- that's usually a very good thing.
  14. Owens had a rough spring training, but he did manage a 2.40 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, 10.1 K/9 in AA last year at age 21. In comparison, Weiland had a 4.42 ERA at AA at age 24. Doubront had a 3.35 ERA, 1.41 WHIP, 8.2 K/9 in AA at age 22. Bowden had a 4.28 ERA, 1.43 WHIP, 7.6 k/9 in AA at age 20. Owens is the only guy who has been a no-hitter threat every minor league start. It will take him time, but he'll get here.
  15. The guy to watch is Brian Johnson. He was a college draftee so he's a bit more advanced at 24. He has 3 decent pitches and a fringe slider. Good 2014 stats, good spring training stats. Certainly not an ace, but I wouldn't be surprised to see him be a more than respectable replacement for Kelly or Masterson in the backend of the rotation.
  16. Almost all ace-type pitchers get drafted in the first 15 picks of the draft. There has been a failure to develop much pitching depth, but expecting an ace out of the backend of the draft is unreasonable. If they don't get anything out of Trey Ball, then I'd agree with you. The only pitching prospects drafted by the Red Sox in the first round lately have been: Casey Kelly, Bryan Price, Haggadone, Ranaudo, Owens, Brian Johnson. None of those guys were drafted with ace ceilings,
  17. You are arguing that the Red Sox's 2015 bullpen cannot be as good as the 2014 and 2013 bullpens combined. The Red Sox don't need to field 7 relievers, not 14. Koji will regress, and too many innings will be a problem, but there is still a lot of talent in that bullpen. Koji/Taz/Varvaro have always been excellent. Tommy Layne's career shows him to be a very good LOOGY. We need a few of Breslow/Ogando/Mujica/Workman/Ross to pitch to their capabilities, but they've all put up excellent numbers as recently as 2013.
  18. In 2013, the bullpen contained Koji, Taz, Breslow, Workman. They still have those guys, and added Mujica, Varvaro, Ogando. Miller was hurt. No other significant pitchers were involved. I just don't understand how anyone can be so far down on a bullpen that hasn't changed much since winning a ring.
  19. I am experience in on mobile, work pc, and home pc. Blah.
  20. This organization seems to think Steven Wright is their #6 pitcher. I read an article recently that looked at the effectiveness of relievers who pitched after Dickey/Wakefield outings. Apparently there is a noticeable decline in BAA/ERA if you pitch after a knuckleballer. In Wake's career it was around an 11% decline in ERA, Dickey's closer to 20%. If Steven Wright is somehow able to pitch like a serviceable backend pitcher, maybe it'll turn into wins. Hopefully?
  21. It doesn't sound like a major injury. Kelly needs to be ready by the middle of the month -- around the 15th. There are a lot of early days off in the season. Steven Wright?
  22. The question is: How much money would you pay to "buy" a first overall draft pick? He could end up being Arod, Agon, Mauer, Price. Or you could end up with someone like Delmon Young/ Matt Bush. There is monstrous talent here -- it is a big risk, but the reward could end up being a franchise changing player.
  23. Headley and Drew are career .700 OPS guys with plenty of question marks. They may add great defense, but they won't fix the offense. Of your "6 of 9 starters 31 and younger", 5 are 31 years old. I agree though, a healthy Tanaka/Pineda would win them a lot of series against weak AL East rotations.
