  1. 7 shutout innings for Buchholz as opening day starter. Phillies or not, I'm very impressed. I hope he's done for the day, because that'll be a big time confidence boost for him.
  2. I just turned the game on, and immediately a home run is launced to left field. Mookie Madness.
  3. I know they're a division rival and all... but I don't think the Toronto Blue Jays deserve that kind of fate.
  4. While I'm not thrilled with the front five, the depth shined in spring training. Brian Johnson and Steven Wright both had excellent starts to the year. Owens looked bad, but he is also still very young.
  5. There are times in a season where a win is less important than a pitcher finding a groove. If Buchholz goes 8 IP, 0ER, 1R and 0-1, I think that is more valuable than a win where he gets hammered. I'd love to see him do all that and get the win, but a good outing from him today will be important for setting the tone for this rotation.
  6. Opening day threads are sacred. No politics please.
  7. I always remember what they used to say about Varitek. He had these big binders full of of opposing batters... spray charts, heat zones, pitch data. There was a certain level of preparation that went into his job, and pitchers respected his pitch calling and would often trust him before their own calls. It was completely intangible, but I certainly would believe it had an effect.
  8. I always liked Fedex. He was traded to the Padres this winter, and is now on the 60 Day DL, so probably not a great fit now.
  9. Excellent banter, chaps. Must-reads, every one. Also: Mookie Madness.
  10. The bet was for 2014, not forever.
  11. So with goJohn99 and his friend, and Gringo, that puts us at 10?
  12. I'm perfectly fine with 8.
  13. I thought there were 5 more games against the Twins? Remy never was good at math.
  14. Bartolo Colon is a cheater. Between Biogenesis and Fattolo Steroid surgery, he must have connections linking David Wright to PEDs or something like that.
  15. The Red Sox are among the top teams in the Grapefruit League. Onto the Mayor's Cup!
  16. I once read an article about "missionary dating" (no, not that kind of missionary). Basically, in a relationship with two people of two different belief systems, one has the intention of eventually converting the other. The article summed up the reality that it almost never goes well. There's resentment, and failure, and arguments. Personally, I have found that it is just easier to find someone who doesn't worship Satan.
  17. The Red Sox replaced Vasquez with someone who is a worse defender, and a worse hitter. We all know that. The reason most of us aren't concerned is that Leon is known to be solid defensively, and Swihart will probably replace him By June anyway. It is far harder to replace a 2 WAR catcher than it would be to replace someone like Ortiz or Porcello.
  18. Any other day would be fine. I could potentially do an early draft (8 am-10am eastern) Sunday.
  19. Can we do a day besides Easter? It is family time for us -- I can move mostly everything else around, but that's not an easy one.
  20. Lester was the one who had serious issues holding runners. No wonder he wanted David Ross catching him so well.
  21. I can't imagine Swihart staying in the minors all season. We'll probably see 30 games of Hannigan, 15 games of Leon through late May. Then, Swihart will be past the cutoff for 7 year MLB eligibility and they will promote him. With Leon's .553 career OPS, Swihart can probably outhit him right now.
  22. Here are his inning numbers, and stolen base attempts over the last few years. His CS has definitely gone down, but teams aren't increasing their amounts of stolen base attempts. 2011 687.1 ip, 52 sba, 18 CS 2012 877.0 ip, 66 sba, 32 CS 2013 589.2 ip, 33 sba, 15 CS 2014 603.2 ip, 38 sba, 8 CS
  23. Atleast we're giving him a full week to learn a pitching staff than to throw him into the fire immediately. He's still going to be way behind, but its better than nothing.
  24. The Red Sox replaced an excellent defensive catcher who can't hit with a solid defensive catcher who can't hit. The Red Sox's best prospect is a solid defensive catcher who CAN hit. This one hurts, but there are certainly worse players to lose.
  25. Buchholz named opening day starter. I believe that he needs the emotional boost -- he's always been a #2/3/4 on the Red Sox, but he's had the stuff to be a #1. Hopefully he embraces the role, but I won't believe it until he's done some winning.
