    Kershaw, Felix, and Verlander's early contracts aren't great examples because they resigned with teams that drafted them. You can't just buy those guys. Theo basically told Seattle to pick any 5 prospects for Felix, but it wasn't enough.

    You're a numbers guys, so maybe this will make more sense: Player A: 4 years, 80 million dollar. All 4 years: Average 3 WAR per year. Player B: 6 years, 80 million dollar. First 4 years: Average 3 WAR per year. Last 2 years: 0 WAR per year. Ignoring inflation, which contract is better? One is 20 million AAV, the other is 13.3 million AAV. They both provide the same value in wins. If Porcello was a 30 year old free agent, no chance he would get a contract like this. They believe he will consistently provide 2-3 WAR every year, and will do so much more consistently than any 30+ free agent -- That's why they paid him a premium for middle-of-the-rotation value.

    Right, but the point is that his contract isn't in a elite money group either. All the teams that signed the other guys are paying for decline years, whereas the Red Sox are paying solely for prime years.

    Let's take a look at some of the tier money out there: Kershaw -- 215 million, through age 33. Felix -- 175 through age 33. Cain -- 125 million through age 33 Scherzer -- 210 million, through age 37. Sabathia -- 122 million through age 37 Lester -- 150 million through age 37 Verlander -- 175 through age 36 Kershaw and Felix might as well be bargains. But the key difference between the Porcello deal and the rest of them is that those teams pay more money for the early years to get the decline years. If you tried to get any of those aces to sign a 4 year deal during prime years, you're probably looking at 40 million per year. The last year of the Porcello contract could be just as good as the first year. All of the others deals are going to see big declines towards the end.

    The Red Sox weren't ever going to make a serious bid on the top tier FA pitchers. Unless one of Cueto/Price/Zimm falls in cost, it won't happen. The FO is going to target young pitchers with high ceilings.It will be a sell-the-farm trade for a Strasburg/Harvey/Sale or an international signing for someone like Otani or Maeda from Japan, or some unknown Cuban star

    Not sure on what the hours are, but there are plenty of bars out there. Cask and Flagons and Game-on are your more traditional sports bar. Boston Beer Works has their own brews. Yardhouse has about 400 beers on tap. Copperfields is the dive bar. There is a country club and a tequila club around there, no opinions on that. Bleacher Bar has a view of the park. Haven't been to Hawthornes, but I hear it is the classy joint. There are plenty of others closeby -- Lower Depths on Comm Ave has good beers, loud music, and insane tater tots. Boylston St has a dozen more.

    Pablo's career with bases loaded are surprisingly awful. 10 for 61, wow.

    If it was anyone, it was going to be Jeff Francouer. What an ugly night for this offense.

    Hanley in the HOF is not out of the question. So far he has a career .874 OPS with 1400 hits while playing shortstop. He doesn't have as many awards as I would have expected, but he was probably the best offensive shortstop of the last decade. If the position change does keep him healthy, he certainly has an outside shot.

    The Red Sox are banking hard on projections. They probably looked at his 2013 numbers (180 IP, 4.30 ERA) and figured that even if he performed to that level he would still be worth the money. This is a team that paid 13m/year for Dempster, 9 million for Masterson, 15m/year for Daisuke, and 17m/year for a mix of great and downright awful years from Lackey/Beckett.

    The Red Sox haven't thrown money at a FA pitcher since Lackey in 2009. Yet, they've signed Crawford, Agon, Hanley, Panda, Victorino. Their eyes are big on finding a Sale/Fernandez/Harvey/Gray type, but we'll see how that goes. If they go for a free agent pitcher, it is probably Strasburg in 2016, who will hit free agency at 28 years old.

The Marlins paid 56 million (plus a 19 million dollar option) for a 32 year old with low strikeouts and an ERA around 4.00. iOrtiz, I distinctly remember you and I agreeing that he was probably going to be worth it, despite that he was only a #2/3 at best. Surprise surprise, Buerhle is 36 and is chasing his 200th win in the majors.

    How about this for perspective: If they had 80 million to spare, why didn't they even look at Shields? The Red Sox have been very clear that they don't like pitchers over 30. With this deal, they get Porcello for ages 26-30. There are plenty of numbers to support the strategy -- pitchers are at their best for those years. I am fairly certain that Cueto/Price/Zimmerman aren't coming to the Sox unless the prices drop. They're probably going to go hard after Kenta Maeda or the a Cuban phenom.

    I don't know if this is a good deal, but it is exactly the philosophy that the organization believes in. Signing a #2/3 pitcher for his age 26-30 seasons makes a lot of sense. It also gives Ben one less thing to worry about next offseason.
