  1. I stopped reading this right here. I've made arguments in a few other threads, but the more I think about it... I should not need to. Look at his stats, look at his postseason stats, look at his stats this April when the Red Sox absolutely needed good starting pitching. If you do not believe Lester is an ace you do not deserve to be a Red Sox fan, and it is as simple as that.
  2. WEEI has something similar http://fullcount.weei.com/sports/boston/baseball/red-sox/2011/10/17/jon-lester-clubhouse-drinking-was-wrong-but-issue-has-been-exaggerated/ Lester seems to be saying this whole thing was overblown. Based on the quotes, it seems like he was angry at the idea that he was following Beckett-- he claimed he was "his own ass man". Popeyes chicken was only a once a month thing, and he claimed no one was actually playing video games.
  3. I was the first person on this board to suggest a Bay-for-Lackey deal, but it is a longshot. I'd also love to see a Figgins deal, but the Red Sox would have to dump a ton of money/prospects. Santana is not happening. He's a bonafide ace, with no major injury history. If he recovers from TJS well, I could see him being a major force for the Mets moving forward.
  4. What does this team lack? They lose drew, who'll be replaced by Kalish. They'll lose Ortiz, who will be replaced by Lavarnway. Youk could get hurt and will be replaced by Middlebrooks, or he'll return to form and OPS .900 again. Add one #3 starter, one #5/6 starter, and a GM who isn't completely incompetent when it comes to building a bullpen, and this team is back in business.
  5. 2015? That seems like a very arbitrary year. Lackey isn't the only player on this team.
  6. Beckett has a fairly serious "Even-Year-Curse" where he will underperform every other year. He has a ERA of 3.30ish in odd years and an ERA of 4.50ish on even years. I know you're not a believer in "ERA on monday afternoon games on turf when the sun is halfway up the sky" statistics, but we're seeing more and more evidence that this is likely caused by poor conditioning and work ethic, rather than being something that balances out. He seems like a very good sell-high candidate.
  7. Sigged.
  8. Injuries to position players are usually related to impact. Injuries to pitchers are more frequently related to conditioning. Everyone seemed to ignore me when I was putting heat on John Farrell, but the entire staff--rotation and bullpen-- has been a complete mess since 2008. Outside of Lester, and maybe Papelbon, there isn't an arm on this team that has showed any kind of consistency whatsoever.
  9. So the guy paying for Crawford was opposed to writing a second $140-200 million dollar check? I'm shocked. This is being blown out. John Henry did not say anything bad about Crawford, and he did not pin the signing to Theo.
  10. Crawford has a career BAA of .293. His career minor league numbers are .294. This is a guy who was supposed to reach 3000 hits in a Red Sox uniform. He's going to get his s*** together, eventually.
  11. Not more tickets-- rather, an equal amount of tickets. Does the casual fan care about what the roster looks like at the time? No, they hear about a big signing, a name that they've actually heard of, and it compells them to be more interested in the team. It seems like 90% of big contracts turn to busts these days anyway-- hell, even Cliff Lee got paid 25 million to melt in the postseason this year.
  12. If you're not going to give him full credit for scouting prospects, you can't give him full credit for scouting free agents either. As far as budget management, I think he has done very well. How many homegrown players have the Red Sox not been able to afford to give contract extensions to? Every year, 10-20 million comes off the payroll, and every year that money goes back into the system. The Red Sox have the second best group of homegrown players in baseball right now, according to WAR values. I think that's worthy of an A in drafting. And despite his failures with FA signings, pretty much every big trade Theo has made has been gold, with the exception of Gagne.
  13. What I'm saying is that I don't believe Theo didn't see the warning signs. Any armchair GM can tear apart the stats and see problems in Crawford, Lackey, Lugo etc long before they got here and turned to garbage. But they sold tickets--which is really all that the ownership can ask for, besides playoff revenue, obviously.
  14. I'm going to play devil's advocate here. What about the financial effect caused by these signings-- not in the long term, but the short term. Every year, the Red Sox have made some big splash to turn up ticket sales. How many years have we gone into the season saying to ourselves "This is going to be a great year, look at this offense!" or "We're going to have the best pitching rotation in the major leagues" or "BEST TEAM EVAH" or something along those lines. As a fan, to see your organization put big money and prospects into the team year after year builds confidence. Look at what they've done after the playoffs every year: 2010-- Crawford/Gonzo/Jenks 2009-- Lackey/Scutaro/Cameron 2008-- Smoltz/Penny 2007-- Won the world series 2006-- JD Drew/ Dice-k 2005-- Beckett Lowell 2004-- Red Sox fans on all time high after World Series... and they sign Renteira.
  15. We've heard nothing from them because it is a lose-lose situation. It is like saying you didn't do steroids-- one bad vitamin, and the press is all over you.
  16. Sounds like you don't want to do research that will prove yourself wrong.
  17. Besides that one quote-- from a year and a half ago-- what evidence is there that Ellsbury and Youkilis don't get along?
  18. He's only one year off of a 4.40 ERA, 215 inning season. And that year happened to include the death of a child, a wife with cancer, a divorce, and reportedly a lot of binge drinking. They'll give him a shot in spring training before completely dumping him.
  19. You may want to refer to the 2011-2012 Offseason Thread. There are already quite a few opinions on the big picture there. You may also want to refer to "So, we're starting over. Expectations?" Or, for Big Papi, there is the "Papi sounds like he's done with Boston" thread. And for the management, there is discussion in "Is Theo Next" and "Theo is gone" and "Next Manager" threads.
