  1. That definition doesn't addend "THIS YEAR" on it. It just says "best starting pitcher of a team". As if... it were talking about a player, in entirety without sample sizes, and in the big picture. Beckett has a career 3.84 ERA. Lester has a career 3.54 ERA, all of which in the AL East. I could throw out a hundred more statistics, but Lester is the better pitcher.
  2. And Buchholz was better than Lester the year before. Just because someone has a good year doesn't make them an ace. Lester has been the rock at the top of the rotation for several years consecutively.
  3. Are you seriously comparing a number one overall draft pick to a sandwhich round pick? That is a terrible argument. Absolutely terrible.
  4. I am glad someone made this thread. I almost made it myself several times during the season, and I also noticed that Scutaro's name was not in any of the bad reports. I do not hide the fact that I was a founding member of the "Lowrie is a Sexy Beast" Fan Club, but even back then, I still defended Scutaro for being everything a team should want in a player. A former "scrub" and bench player, he has had three or four excellent seasons in a row. For 4.5 million I sure hope they excercise his option.
  5. Lester has been the ace of this staff for three years now. He should be a leader in this clubhouse-- not a young guy who needs direction.
  6. Tampa? Their payroll is 30 million, and he made 13 million last year. I do not see it.
  7. I'm not talking about fixing Beckett. Beckett is going to do his own thing. I am talking about how the rest of the rotation responds, and they are going to need to listen to Lester, not Beckett.
  8. So your starting rotation is fat-Lester, a Buchholz who missed most of the season, the worst pitcher in baseball, and then some combination of Wakefield/Miller/Weiland? The solution to this problem is simple. Take Lester aside, and let him know that he is the leader of the rotation. Give him the game 1 start. This is not Beckett's team anymore. Until 2011, Lester has always appeared to be a very hard worker. The last several years, he has been the first to show up at Ft. Myers, and the Red Sox coaches have said very warm and glowing things about him.
  9. He doesn't want to come back? Offer him arbitration, and take the picks. It is as simple as that.
  10. Apparently Beckett has been a lazy teammate since his days in Florida in 2003. He also has some nice jewelery. I think if someone is willing to give a Jimeniz haul for him, it may be worth considering, but this staff just has too many holes to give up a big piece.
  11. I heard a few reports that the Red Sox are likely going to pick up Scutaro's option, and honestly, its a no-brainer. He was worth 10 million last year, and he'll cost 4.5 in 2012. As far as Middlebrooks, I think the organization will probably give him a little more time. Youkilis can handle 3B for the first half of the year--it is the second half when they'll need Middlebrooks.
  12. Edit: Oh, I thought you were making fun of Jacko. He was talking about Matt Garza, the pitcher.
  13. I don't necessarily agree. We're talking about an organization that has been pulling in high draft picks and has a ton of money coming off the books in the next few years. Any competent GM could do wonders with that.
  14. If we regret it later, that would mean that the prospects he drafted from 2009-2011 turned into quality players. So, even if we "regret it" he'll still be helping the organization in the future.... unless they hire a GM who trades all those guys away.
  15. Massive news. So much to discuss. First point: If the NL accepts the DH, Ortiz is gone.
  16. NWIH the Cubs give up a top 50 prospect for Theo.
  17. I disagree. The majority of the things Theo does are very well executed. If the Red Sox continue to do all those things and use his methods... and throw away the book on how he scouted big dollar players, this fanbase is in for a treat.
  18. I absolutely agree with this. If they want to act like children, treat them as such. If they misbehave, let the media know. Let them make Boston their own enemies, and see how they enjoy living the life of luxury when they can't walk around their own town in safety.
  19. Honestly, I think this whole "the clubhouse is ugly, everything is s***" situation could be a good thing. It means that this team is actually talented afterall, and it isn't the fault of any executive who put the team together, it is the fault of the players and the coaches. It means this team is still talented enough for 100 wins.
  20. Beckett AND Lester?
  21. Apparently Terry Francona was separated from his wife, and addicted to painkillers? Man, what s s***-show.
  22. If Jed Lowrie was my only friend, I'd be okay with that.
