  1. Seriously? Agon has the sniffles? Pathetic. Oh well, Gomez can probably outhit him anyway.
  2. If this team's stars perform, what difference would one of those pitchers make? If two of this team's big pitchers start pitching like aces, they'll make it into that wild card spot. If they don't, Hamels or Greinke isn't going to help. None of those arms are going to win them the division. At this point, the team is in shambles, and their farm system has been worthless for a very long time. Trading any of the Ryans or the Killer B's would be a huge mistake. The team's best interest is to see what they've got for the next month, and then go bargain hunting for a #3 starter if necessary with guys like Pimental, Coyle, or Lars Anderson. One more time, trading the Ryans or the Killer B's would be a huge mistake.
  3. If I had a guess, I would probably say April is his surgery date as well.
  4. Beckett was one of the best pitchers in baseball last year. I'd also be willing to eat 5-10 million salary, so we're looking at Beckett for 2.5 years for only 33 million. Put it into perspective. Would you trade Cecchini to get Dan Haren? Same age, similar ERA in 2011, similar ERA in 2012. Giving up the same caliber of prospect. And do you know why Cody Ross is valuable? Because whoever trades for him will pay 1 million dollars for him. That's it. A guy who has had a .900 OPS most of the year. Beltran was traded for a top 100 prospect with a .900 OPS last year on a much bigger contract, and significant health concerns. If you throw in a kicker, like a bullpen arm, or maybe Shoppach, I'd bet he Ross can pull in a prospect from the top 50-100. Same deal for Beckett, throw in a kicker if you need to. Shoppach/Albers/Sweeney won't pull in an elite prospect, but in a bigger trade, they'd certainly help. And Ellsbury/Ortiz?
  5. Remember when Philly was so scared of Cliff Lee leaving for free agency that they traded him for Halladay?
  6. By trading Beckett and a few players who will not be with this team in 2013/2014, the Red Sox could possibly find themselves with the best minor league system in the majors. All while holding onto Pedroia/Agon/Lester/Buch/Bailey etc etc for the future and saving enough money to get under the cap and afford a new arm for next year. Or they could mortgage it all for a one-game winner take all matchup against 2012's Cy Young winner Jared Weaver.
  7. I feel like I've been making this same exact post for a while now Between Ross/Ortiz/Ellsbury and a discounted Beckett, they could probably get 3-5 top 100 prospects. Maybe more if they throw in some of the other players as kickers. It is very unusual for sellers at the deadline to have so many wares available, and I believe they could probably get a big haul-- Could you imagine if this team turns into the MLB's top farm system without even touching their longterm core players? Dojji would need a whole new wardrobe to replace all those pairs of pants. Not to mention the long term consideration of getting under the luxury tax/ saving enough money to pick up an elite starting pitcher next year.
  8. I agree, but if you can get value for him, I'd say do it. I think he'll be a great fit with the Rangers, personally. I think they'll be desperate enough to trade a top chip for him, maybe more depending on how much the Red Sox bite. With Hamilton hitting free agency and a very weak field in the AL this year, this could be their best shot.
  9. Ellsbury and Middlebrooks will be back in the lineup after the ASB.
  10. The reality is... they need their stars to start stepping up. And if Pedroia/Gonzalez/Lester/Buchholz come back in full force, they can get to the playoffs without Beckett/Ross/Shoppach. We'll probably never hear the end of it from a couple posters on here if the Red Sox turn into sellers and still make the playoffs, but trading a few stopgap players and Mr. Toxic-Clubhouse couldn't hurt.
  11. The big problem that I see is the competition that the Red Sox have for the wildcard. Take your pick on wildcard opponents-- Price/Shields, Weaver/Haren, or Verlander? I seriously doubt Cleveland/Baltimore pull away. The Red Sox also have players that are going to be far more valuable now than in the offseason. Josh Beckett: Teams are always desperate for starting pitching, and there are some solid options in the offseason. They need to get rid of this guy badly. They can justify trading Beckett to the fans very easily. Cody Ross: He's very cheap, and could help out a small budget contender that needs some pop. If injury-prone and expensive Carlos Beltran can pull in an elite prospect, I would bet that Cody Ross certainly could as well. They could also justify it by saying they're "making room from one of the returning players". Shoppach: Lavarnway fever? Bullpen pieces: Would the average fan miss an Albers, an Atchison, a Mortensen or a Tazawa? --------------------------------------------------------- Trading Pedroia/Lester/Ortiz would kill ticket sales, but would it make any difference to the average fan if they picked up some quality prospects for those guys?
  12. I saw him ranked midseason at #49. Throw in one or two others quality prospects, and that's about right, considering Elsbury is injured and essentially a one year rental. Best case scenario you get two top 100 prospects for him, but none of them are going to be much better than Lee-- those are the guys you save for your franchise's future.
  13. Anyone have a good feed of this one? Comcast is messing with my cable.
  14. I'd take Arod over Crawford every day of the week. He's had very few injuries in his career, he's going to get on base and produce, whereas with Crawford, who knows?
  15. You're really reaching on these. There is zero chance that the Red Sox trade Pedroia. Why trade him when his value is at an alltime low? Unlike Beckett, has an elite work ethic and lives and breathes baseball. He's also arguably the best player on this team, and the only one with any major hardware (Baseball Classic MVP trophies do not count). You can improve the team's future without trading him. There are plenty of very good trade options that other teams would consider, like Beckett/ Ross/ Ortiz/ Albers/ Ellsbury/ Sweeney/ Shoppach / Salty, and it will be considerably easier to replace the production we see from any of those guys.
  16. This. The Red Sox have had serious medical issues over the last few years, and it is pretty clear to me why: They wait on surgery. If they KNOW something is wrong, they wait anyway. Crawford should have had surgery the minute they lost to the Orioles last year. They knew about it, but waited till April to worry about it. Pedroia's thumb has been a huge problem that has made him play like not-Pedroia. Now these injuries that have been killing the team for months haven't even been operated on yet, and will not get better without surgery. Its just ugly.
