  1. Aceves only threw 40 pitches through the first 3 innings. Crazy.
  2. They really need to change the rule for when stray balls hit a bat accidentally and are called foul when a player is getting out of the way of a bad pitch. Under no circumstances do you want a player having to weigh the options of protecting their head or preventing a bad call.
  3. Is there a better hitter in baseball than David Ortiz right now?
  4. The defense is saving Aceves's ass today.
  5. I always wonder if Iglesias has just been getting lucky with all the infield hits, or if his other-worldly reflexes allow him to put his weak shots wherever he wants them.
  6. Aceves is really awful at covering first base.
  7. Even with the bad hip, Napoli has played 50 of 51 games so far this season. Give the guy a day or two off, no biggy.
  8. Anyone else find it very strange that the Red Sox are playing 2 game against the Phils at home, and then getting on the same plane (not literally) as the Phils to play again away?
  9. Wow, triple post. I like Va's better!
  10. My list is shorter. 1) A win. 2) No major injuries.
  11. You could just as easily find big flaws in WMB as well. From his multiple injuries over the last year to his unfortunate strikeout numbers. CH will probably level out as a 20 HR hitter, but its hard to ignore the defense, speed, and OBP.
  12. By the way, I love the concept of building a team this way-- Very happy with the offseason moves and strategy even before we saw the results. In years past there have been glaring holes that simply made sense to address, but it isn't necessarily the same way this year. My ideal scenario is giving WMB + Britton for Headley, and re-signing him around 4-5 at 15 per, which would sit between A-ram (3/36) and Beltre (6/96) money. Probably a pipe dream. Picking up good starting pitching is always very hard at the deadline-- finding someone who can produce noticeably better than 2012 Morales will cost a top 5 prospect from the farm.
  13. Absolutely. If it will take 200 mill to resign Headley, that would be silly. The guy has a .770 career OPS. The problem is that Middlebrooks is going to take some time to figure it out in the majors, and if the Red Sox continue playing like they do, he's the weak link. The challenge at the trade deadline is that the Red Sox have many good players, but few great ones. Being able to upgrade the team significantly over mid-tier players like a Gomes or a Morales will be costly. In terms of upgrading the team for a championship run without sacrificing talent, I can think of no other way.
  14. The Red Sox have a bad habit of pitching directly at aging and declining power hitters and getting smashed. It seems like every loss there is an Adam Dunn or Carlos Pena that we say "Oh, that guy is washed up, he's hitting like crap" and it goes badly.
  15. As I said, I wouldn't want to give up any top prospects besides Middlebrooks. One is a 30 HR third baseman with plus defense, and the other is potentially a 30 hr third baseman with plus defense. If all it will cost to make the upgrade is money, then why not? That being said, the Padres will be looking for more than Middlebrooks, and I think giving up anyone more than a Britton or a Holt would be a mistake.
  16. Let's just hope the bats and the bullpen are warm. The Phillies offense should be in rough shape without Utley-- hopefully they're smart enough to pitch around Howard.
  17. 9th inning, 4 run walk-off win against a team with a very solid bullpen? Hellz yes. Wish I watched this one.
  18. Atleast I admit it Middlebrooks was a top 50 prospect who has shown that he belongs in the majors, even if he might still be a work in progress. He also fills the hole left behind for 6 more years. I'd argue he's probably worth quite a bit more than A-ball blue chip at this point. If I was in the Padre fan-base, it would be a tough move that I'd respect, but they probably should expect one more top prospect from the Sox system, and that wouldn't be worth it for the Sox.
  19. The biggest need at the moment has to be 3B. I would look into a Chase Headley for Middlebrooks + prospects trade. I don't know what it would take, but it seems like it would make sense for both teams. Headley *might* hit better at Fenway, and the Red Sox have enough money to re-sign him and upgrade the position with more consistency. The Padres get a work-in-progress replacement that has likely potential to be just as good for more years. The problem is that I would hesitate giving up more than mid-tier prospects along with Middlebrooks-- Maybe I'm being a homer, but they seem like they are of similar value at this point because Middlebrooks is controllable for 6 more years.
  20. I'd argue that Bourn and Ellsbury are comparable players when healthy-- One has slightly better defense, the other has slightly better offense. Problem is, Ellsbury is never healthy. You don't give a 50 million dollar deal to a guy with a .650 OPS and injury issues, and also give up a draft pick for him. Granderson has a better chance to get a big deal, but as a 40 HR player, he'll probably want to go for the 100m deal the following year.
  21. They'll both want to go back to free agency after 2014 and shoot for 9 figures. Teams aren't going to want to give up a draft pick and 50+ for a guy with Ellsbury's production, or Granderson with a broken forearm + hand unless they have very strong second halves.
  22. I'm starting to think that both Ellsbury and Granderson will both be back with their respective AL East teams in 2014 accepting arbitration deals.
  23. Its pouring, and the Sox are up 8-1. I really hope they just call this game.
  24. That means he'll be back with the Yanks next year for 1/14.
