  1. He is probably part of solution, but the pitching staff is probably doing better because of the improved communication within the team. It seems like every time a pitcher on the staff has shown a flaw in his mechanics or his demeanor, someone from the coaching staff has stepped in and helped him correct it. We've heard talk about changes in the mechanics of Lester and Dempster, which seem to have helped both. We've heard about how Pedro stepped in to help fat-Doubront get his head back into the game. Lackey's antics on the mound have mostly gone away. I also think that Salty has finally gotten in a groove with the staff, and it seems like they are much more comfortable throwing to him than in years past.
  2. In a similar report, Olney and Stark both agreed that Garza will be the most expensive player to get traded this year. I'm assuming that excludes players with long term contracts and might get traded like Gallardo, Stanton or Price, but still makes me significantly less interested. If they want him badly enough, pay him in the offseason.
  3. I think the Red Sox need to put aside Workman, Britton, Kalish, Bard and possibly Brentz and see what turns up. A 8th inning reliever a backup catcher, and another infield bat would help this team significantly, and those positions shouldn't cost that much. Unless its Lee/Stanton, overpaying in prospects for anyone should be out of the question right now.
  4. The thing about Doubront is that he has been very consistent for the Red Sox this year. He has made 14 starts this year, and in 13 of them he has allowed 3 or fewer earned runs. He hasn't gone nearly as deep as we'd want him to, but he has faced many good teams already this year. If someone is willing to give up significant value for him I might be interested, but you're talking about a healthy 25 year old left handed power pitcher that can reach up to 96 mph, and hovers around 9 K/9. If he puts it all together, the Sox would feel a good deal of seller's remorse.
  5. Brandon Synder is looking like a real major league player. Its funny that he replaced Pedro Ciriaco, and they're both 4A players who came in to play utility roles and and ended up overproducing.
  6. He's also on pace to crush his highest 2B total (25) and RBI total (75).
  7. I'd love to see the Padres using the 7 run rule this afternoon.
  8. If there ever was a good day to get your first win, its against the Padres offense.
  9. Thanks! Anyone know of a way to get in touch with rjortiz? Otherwise we might have to start one.
  10. FYI, if anyone needs to get their old avatar in the meantime, they can jump back to web.archive.org at http://web.archive.org/web/20130113033336/http://www.talksox.com/forum/
  11. Buchholz has lost his chance at the CY Young already, and the All Star game should be out of the question. I doubt its just soreness -- it probably was a roughed up vertebrae. They need to do whatever it takes to keep him healthy and ready for the playoffs, even if that means keeping him out of games in July.
  12. Price has a career 2.80 ERA in Tampa, and a 3.80 ERA elsewhere. We see it year after year. Tampa builds up a pitcher's reputation with that ballpark and defense. They trade him early, and get a haul. Sometimes the pitcher turns out to be not-as-good as he was, and sometimes he just implodes. Price is probably worth Bogaertz, but it will probably take Cecchini and Webster as well to get him.
  13. Well, personally I'd trade for Peavy All the options scare me. Garza and Peavy have been hurt. Shields, and Price will cost no less than Xander Bogaertz. I have the impression that Gallardo doesn't want to pitch in the AL. His no-trade list consists of a pile of hitter's parks. Its a bad sign when Cliff Lee is the best option for the Red Sox.
  14. However, Sanana may be one of the cheaper options on the market. Besides Cliff Lee, and Price I don't see many options that outclass Santana. Gallardo, Garza, Shields, Peavy, Nolasco and company will cost significantly more, and may not give back much more production.
  15. NESN showed an interesting chart tonight. They showed the percentages of Webster's pitches, and he's basically cut out everything but his fastball and changeup in his last start.
  16. Halfway through the season and Davis is on pace for 56 home runs. Crazy. Where do these guys come from?
  17. There are a pile of other solid relievers out there, and none of them will cost 45 million + Webster. Just a few names I've seen-- sure they're in the next tier, but another solid reliever at a fraction of the cost would definitely help. Scott Downs Francisco Rodriguez Matt Lindstrom Steve Cishek
  18. Rogers has career lines of a 5.48 ERA, a 1.58 WHIP. He should be batting practice, but we'll see what happens.
  19. Wait... is that right? The Pirates are the best team in the MLB right now. Edit: RSFFL just beat me to it.
  20. Celtics added 4 first round draft picks and dumped Jason Terry. I had no idea they were going to be able to add that many picks by trading aging veterans. 2014 will be a tough year for the Celtics, but that's how basketball goes. Hopefully the Nets explode and those picks turn valuable.
  21. Welker, Gronk, Hernandez. Too many key offensive pieces falling off. I get a strange feeling that the Pats will have a top defense next year, and have no punch.
  22. Wow. Might be a post of the year contender.
  23. Look at the defensive component. If he had been at SS this whole time, he'd have triple his current WAR.
  24. In all fairness, the Yankees paid him 300 million to stick needles into his arms. They shouldn't be pissed at him about that. Really, why be pissed at a player who is excited to get back on the field? Its just clear that the Yankees don't want anything to do with him anymore.
