On a related note -- Ross has been cleared to play, and is expecting to return to the Sox in August when his 60-Day DL trip is up.

The Red Sox have scouts watching Norris, but I don't think he's a realistic option for them. Whoever gets Norris will need to overpay him in talent because his contract is so palatable. Peavy's contract prices him out for a good number of teams. At the end of the day, would you rather give a guy like Middlebrooks for a consistent #5 starter, or an inconsistent #2 ?

The word is that the Cubs are "paying more than half" of his salary. If the Yankees end up having to pay 10 of the remaining 24 and give up junk, I'd still say that's exactly the kind of move they should be making, given that they want to contend this year. That being said, they're in a lose-lose situation. Even if they decide to tank it, and get prospects for their best players... their attendance is tanking fast already. Their organization is popular because they're winners... if they have a s*** team, their fans will look for other teams to root for quickly.

I ran through the last year of MLBTraderumors on JE. Every time anyone asks him about his contract, he says that Boras is in constant talks with the Red Sox FO, and if they put an offer in front of Boras, it would make its way to him. Everything that JE and Henry give the impression that Ellsbury simply isn't in the team's long term plans.

Has Ellsbury said absolutely anything on the subject? I can't remember the last time he made any kind of public statement. The dude is just quiet. This is not like the situation with Papelbon where he straight-up said he planned to go to the highest bidder. Henry mentioned that a deal probably won't get done, but its all up to Jacoby.

Mostly Irrelevant Fun fact: On Red Sox Smalltalk, when asked about who his favorite teammate was, Pedroia mentioned Ellsbury first, and threw a few other names out there as well. They seem like two completely opposite human beings.

Some players are fragile, and others are just unlucky. Peavy has had three major injuries in the last 10 years. 1) Broken rib. 2) Busted ankle on the basepaths. 3) Jake-Peavy Surgery. That doesn't exactly scream Nancy Drew.

Workman is the definition of a mid-level prospect -- definitely not a blue chipper, but not just a throw-in either. On a lesser farm system he'd probably be a #5-10 prospect. Hell, we would have been gushing over the guy in 2011.

Tonight is a pretty crucial game. After two demoralizing CGs against a powerful division rival, the Red Sox need a win to build some momentum. Its also important to get wins with Lackey on the mound.

Best case scenario, they're both healthy and productive. Either way, you need more than 1 starter in the playoffs, and you never know how Lackey's arm will react to a long season with TJS.

The scouting reports I've heard give me the impression that Workman has flat pitches, and a somewhat low ceiling. Cheap starting pitching is still very valuable, which is why he seems like a good chip.

Do we have a reason to have any confidence whatsoever in Buchholz? Historically he has pitched very poorly the first few starts coming off the DL, and that's if he does come back in mid September.

It was a slash Lindstrom in all fairness... I wasn't sure if there was anything the Red Sox could do to bypass the rules to trade for Crain as a PTBNL. I would attribute Peavy's failures to health more than anything. He's definitely a when-healthy guy, and the times he has been healthy -- like 2012, and most of 2013 till he started to get hurt -- he's been very good in the AL. He's a gamble, but I would much rather chance it for a 2012 Peavy than an any-year Bud Norris.

What concerns me the most about the Red Sox is that they don't have a very solid #1. They have plenty of #2s and #3s, but in a wild card game against a Verlander/Weaver/Price/Colon/Darvish I think the Red Sox will be toast.

Peavy and Crain/Lindstrom seem like very tempting targets. I've been told I rate Peavy higher than most people around here, but so be it. He's a 32 year old AL SP with a 3.49 career ERA, a CY Young, a 4 time all star, and is controllable. If the Red Sox could get both those guys for Middlebrooks + Wilson, it would be a difference maker in a playoff push.

Everyone has talked about David Price has come off the DL in a blaze of glory to lift up the Rays to a WS contender. He beat the Astros. Then the White Sox. Then the Astros again. Then he gave up 4 runs to the Blue Jays. I'm unimpressed. So far, the Rays are 0-2 when facing the Red Sox with Price on the mound. Tonight, it will be 0-3.

I see Workman as a big trade piece right now. He's shown he can have success as a major league starter in SSS, but he projects as a back end guy. #4/5 starters with low ceilings are exactly who you want to trade because they have much more value on mediocre teams than good ones. We've seen them trading many back-end starters for key pieces in the past -- ie Gabbard, Weiland and to a lesser extent Masterson and Arroyo. I'm sure there have been better examples.

Look at how everyone viewed Stephen Drew's free agency last year. He had two bad years because of one single non-recurring injury, so he got a one year pillow contract to prove he's still the same guy before hitting free agency big in 2014. Different scenario, but if Drew had an .800 OPS he'd up for a big contract. Lackey's situation is very similar. Having a season that shows he's back to form -- and that his single non-recurring injury is not a problem -- will go far in proving his value. That being said, everyone speaks wonders about him in the clubhouse, and I think he's worth more here than somewhere else.
