  1. AJ Burnett and Liriano come to mind. Bartolo Colon (several times). Alfredo Aceves (until he went bat-s*** insane). Andrew Miller went from an extremely talented guy to a very solid lefty. Freddy Garcia for the Yanks. Pretty much every single pitcher the Rays have signed in the last decade. It happens all the time -- I think this year's batch of buy-low pitchers is significantly deeper than we've seen in years past. I can't stress enough that as an arm-chair GM I have absolutely no idea which of these guys will succeed, but I think that is what the Red Sox's scouting department is for -- figuring out which of these guys can turn around their careers.
  2. Awesome!
  3. I always have to preface the next statement with "The FO needs to have scouts examining all of the following bargain bin options, and pick the ones that appear healthy and actually have a chance to make a comeback" or less I tend to get hammered. Every time I look, it seems like there are more and more quality buy-low candidates for starting pitching. Johnson, Halladay, Anderson, Marcum, Johann Sanatana are all on the pile. Several guys with very good pasts -- one or two might actually turn it around.
  4. I have spent far too much time thinking about Peavy's duck boat. I have no idea what it would cost, but I figure it probably has to be in the 100k range. That's a big investment. I bet he'll actually use it as a vehicle -- he is a big fisherman isn't he?
  5. The beauty of the 2014 team is that even if they lose players, their farm system has recently been rated as the best in the majors for talent in the upper minors. Over the next few years they'll be churning out quality. The one guy they cannot lose is Napoli though. Xander is better than Drew. Salty's bat will be missed, but when the Red Sox's ERA drop a quarter to half a point next year, we'll all know why. Finding a replacement in CF could be tough, especially for a one year fill-in.

  7. The real value of Salty is that he is the rare case of a young and healthy catcher hitting the free agent market. Very few catchers hit the open market before 30, and almost none have caught as few games as he has. While he might not make high AAV, he could get as many as 4-5 years.
  8. I don't think the Dodgers are nearly as desperate for starting pitching, and they certainly aren't concerned about the luxury tax at all.
  9. 50 million seems like a large amount of money, but after seeing Yankee Stadium completely empty on week night games it may hurt their profits more than help them. New Yorkers aren't going to know what to do with a losing team.
  10. I just don't see any reason why Tanaka isn't a complete lock to go to the Yankees. They desperately need a starter to replace Pettite and/or Kuroda. They desperately want to get under the luxury tax. They are the richest team in the majors. They also have a pretty solid pick #18 that they might not want to give away. Garza won't cost a draft pick either, but he's barely in #3 territory these days.
  11. Agon also played gold glove defense and could stay healthy a full season.
  12. The Yankees had their worst offense in 20 years and they're letting go of a 40 Hr centerfielder and a MVP caliber 30 HR middle infielder? Doubt it.
  13. Didn't we say the same thing again about Agon?
  14. David Ross. Vazquez and Swihart are the guys the Sox want behind the plate, and I think those are the guys that need another year.
  15. The Red Sox have no intention of starting a rookie catcher. How much did we see of Lavs and Butler in September? Little to none. They will find a one-year deal on a catcher because they need time to let the young backstops develop. Honestly, they'll probably regret not giving Salty the QO -- a one-year deal on him seemed like it would probably be worth it.
  16. Napoli is going to be tough to replace. Sure he struck out a lot, but he had the best UZR/150 among first basemen, and had some very clutch playoff hits. When he got hot, he carried the team. Everyone seems to think he will re-sign, and I sure hope he does.
  17. Let Kuroda go? He was your best pitcher, and if the Yankees don't sign him, they might not get a draft pick anyway.
  18. Remember when we used to hear the P word after almost every game? Koji sure quieted that crowd the second half of the season.
  19. I'm not saying Ortiz wasn't a complete f***ing steal, just that Pedro is in a league of his own.
  20. Pedro is arguably the best ever. While very very good and insanely good, I don't think anyone would say the same thing about Ortiz.
  21. Find me a contract that doesn't pale in comparison to Pedro's contract with the Sox.
  22. Is it just me, or are career ending injuries extremely uncommon though? I can't think of any players who received large contracts and simply never played again. Brandon Webb was at the end of his contract when his career ended. Johann Santana too, and he may very well pitch again. Mike Cameron was at the end of his career. ARod is a possibility, but how many players get 10 year deals ? Mike Hampton?
  23. I will probably be making him that bet all offseason to try to fend off his bad mojo in 2014:p . While I do see the appeal of a half-price luxury-tax, 26 year old star pitcher with no compensation pick attached, the problem with Tanaka is that he is more likely to turn into a Dice-k than a Darvish. Dice-k and Tanaka both threw insane 15-20 inning games in high school, whereas Darvish did not. High mileage on your arm at a young age is never good.
  24. Even if Sabathia's career ended tomorrow, that's about as good production you're ever going to get from a long contract like that. In 5 years so far, he has been a legit ace for 4, and they won a championship with him pitching to a 1.98 ERA in 2009.
