  1. We're really just arguing the meaning of the term "consistent" at this point. He produces well above average numbers -- even on his off years -- and plays every single game. Texeira is four years older, and hasn't been nearly as healthy. Three years of decline is a huge exaggeration -- his 2012 numbers were his 4th highest out of his 9 seasons. Although, a smart team would just DH the guy.
  2. If the Tigers bite 25 million, he costs 20 million a year which really isn't that bad for his talent level. The guy puts up big numbers year after year. In the last five years he has played 162, 162, 162, 161, and 162 games. How do you get more consistent than that?
  3. Fielder is still only 29 years old. If it wasn't for his father's career, why wouldn't you want the age 29-35 seasons of one of the most consistent power hitters in the majors?
  4. Rangers and Detroit talking about a Fielder for Kinsler swap. The two teams that have ruled the American league the last few years trying to make a trade -- they must be afraid of the new contender.
  5. Three of which are at the end of his career when he supposedly switched to first base. You forgot to look up the facts on this one, don't worry about it. I'm sure there are better examples, because I do completely agree that players switch to 1B late in their careers. My concern is that he is doing it at the age of 37 with no infield experience in his entire career. He'd survive for a season while he is healthy, but it is years 2, 3 and 4 I am concerned about.
  6. Yaz played first base in 15 different seasons, as well as time at 3B. Napoli averaged 50 games a year at 1B from 2010-2012. Not only does Beltran have zero games at 1B, he has zero games in the infield for his career.
  7. He is 37 years old, and has played zero games at first base in his major league career. He is an even worse fit at 1B than LF.
  8. Beltran is NOT an upgrade to Nava/Gomes though. If platooned correctly, they can produce roughly a .850 OPS with a .380 OBP, and comprable defense.
  9. I'm surprised it was that much. He hasn't had an ace-like season since 2010. In the last few years, elbow surgery to remove bone spurs, forearm tightness, lost significant time to shoulder inflammation, triceps issues. He's wounded.
  10. I just don't get the need for Beltran. He's way too old, fills no role, and costs too many years and a draft pick. On a 1/20 year, great. Otherwise, I just don't understand this at all. Can he play 1B?
  11. Josh Johnson for 1/8. Wow.
  12. I'm a big fan of signing Hart as a backup plan. Signing him could potentially net the Red Sox two first round picks. The problem is that the Red Sox will need to wait till December and his health information becomes available, and if it turns out his knees are shot after Napoli signs, that could be a problem.
  13. Joe Mauer's career average -- .323. Matt Wieter's career OBP -- .319. Something isn't right here haha
  14. I don't see him going for any less than 220. He's too good of a player, and he is about as healthy as they come. He has averaged above 160 games a year. In the last four years, he has been #3, #6, #4 and #5 for the MVP. Several All-star nominations, several gold gloves-- at a premium position. Plenty of playoff experience. Being a Yankee makes him much more famous and marketable than smaller market players. His L/R splits aren't any concern. I am usually pretty adamant about avoiding long term deals, but he's the kind of guy you want to dish one out for. After year 5, the contract will hurt like a bitch, but it is what it is.
  15. I try to bring that up whenever people talk about trading him. He's significantly more valuable than some posters here realize.
  16. Getting rid of his 14 million would be great. Getting rid of 7 million of his 14 million would not be great.
  17. Well, it was good while it lasted. Kidding guys, just goofing off
  18. I just want to put out that iOrtiz and a700 just disagreed about something. Cherish this moment friends.
  19. One student doesn't make a college. 8 U.S. Presidents have attended Harvard, including Obama. Two more Vice Presidents as well. 40 Nobel Prize winners. A long list of senators and congressmen. I'm sure the college doesn't lose sleep over letting in one overprivileged senator's son 30 years ago.
  20. I just don't think the Yankees can keep bleeding stars. Last year, Posada, Swisher, Martin, and others. This year, Pettite, Rivera. Maybe Granderson, Kuroda, A-rod, Cano. The talent just isn't out there on the free agent market to replace those guys. After next year, Jeter's gone. The Yankees will have to re-sign Robertson and Gardner, and those guys may very well get 15M AAV. Outside of Nova, the entire team will be mercenaries. The casual fans are going to get lost in the shuffle.
  21. Rockies sign Hawkins for 2.25 mill. He has to be ancient by now.
  22. So what was up with extending Pedroia at the end of last year? Extending him at the beginning of the season would have saved cap room.
  23. No idea, that was a complete guess.
  24. Aceves - 2.65M 10M + roughly for Pedroia. 14.5M + for Peavy. Abitration raises.
  25. The key to the offseason revolves around Cano. They will have significantly more flexibility if he leaves, but they will also have a monstrous hole to fill in his place -- not to mention holes left by a first-ballot and a potentially late-ballot hall of famer. I get the feeling that the Yankees will hold the line for next year. That #18 pick is the best they've had in a long time. Sign Cano, sign Tanaka, sign Garza, and one of the top tier closers, trade for a 3B, call it an offseason. A rotation of Sabathia, Tanaka, Nova, Garza would be scary, especially with depth like Banuelos and Pineda waiting in the wings. The offense would be in the better part of second tier, but still very good. The bullpen would be solid, if not nostalgic for better days.
