  1. A fine line between good and bad with these guys. If they get mishandled, they can go sour. They can also slip if they gain a few pounds and slack off in their conditioning. Lester has lost his cutter, as he has gotten chubbier.
  2. Could be a perception, based on Youkilis, that some Sox players are not putting out right now because of internal problems with the team. In that case, there should be a pretty good market for guys like Lester and Beckett. I suspect, at least in Lester's case, that he's overweight, and has been the last two seasons in which his performance has dropped off. Look at the guy's puffy face. He and Dice-K. I doubt the Red Sox are a type of organization that monitors conditioning very closely. Papi finally got himself in shape after two declining seasons.
  3. Lester keeps getting worse. They don't have a clue how to deal with him. He looks overweight to me. So does Beckett. They both look like they've gained some lbs, and we know what that did to Papi. Wow. They screwed up Bard. God knows what they'll do to Lester. They won't dare to run him out there again.
  4. Looks like Lester did a Bard--without going to Pawtucket.
  5. What they'll do is what they did to Bard. Send him down to Pawtucket and kill his confidence some more. I have some real ideological problems with that front office.
  6. The irony of giving Ells and CC rest days off is that the guy who may really need a couple days off is Nava. LOL.
  7. This team is leading the majors in runs scored on in the first inning. I want to know why the Boston media isn't asking any questions. They probably contributed to the problem with their beer-chicken crap, so why aren't they asking questions? Henry should realize by now he hasn't changed the culture that caused the September collapse last year. Something is wrong with his organization, and he hasn't identified it.
  8. Put the guy in the bullpen, and let him iron his problems out. Are they really this dumb? Who is keeping him in the rotation? Is it Valentine? Is it Cherington? Who the hell knows on this team. Do they really think Garza isn't an improvement right now? That shows there is a reality problem.
  9. Beckett, by the way, isn't the only starter flaming out in early innings. That points to preparation as the general problem.
  10. Kalish can't be dealt because I don't think they can afford to keep both Ells and CC. Plus it will take a ransom to extend Ells with Boras as his agent. You know he will test the market. As for Lav, right now he might be better than Salty. You can't deal a guy like that. He could be their next DH at the minimum, or maybe an all-star catcher in a few years. They have plenty of lower level prospects they can deal. Epstein knows them. Nava would fit as trade bait, but he has really dropped off in hitting. He has far fewer skills than Kalish.
  11. Tek says Salty is doing well. His power numbers are near the top for a catcher, but their losing record when he catches vs Shoppach indicates he still is learning about how to call a game. It's surprising the length of leash Salty has been given to gain "experience" on the job, while others have to wait in Pawtucket.
  12. V's biggest mistake was mouthing off to the media about one of his players. The media response of Pedey was also out of line, and hinted the players were running the asylum--which may be the underlying problem. It's not a very disciplined team.
  13. I think they have to do something "bold", but Silverman at the Herald doesn't think so--if you read his column this morning. He does say they need another starter--but that would be very "bold" for this management.
  14. You worry about Morales attitude. The guy was lights out in most starts, then he winds up back in the bullpen. He succeeded starting and gets sent back to the bullpen. Bard failed as a starter and gets sent back to the bullpen. What's the message?
  15. I didn't mean to compare Sveum and Valentine. I think the process is what LL/Henry screwed up. The public vetting and the second guessing. It isn't clear to me where the FO stops and Valentine starts. I don't know who is making the personnel decisions on the field. Plus they have a lot of coaches who Valentine didn't hire. You wonder how all this plays out with the players. From the outside, it looks confusing.
  16. I think the way they changed managers and all that beer-chicken stuff has damaged this team--more than people realized. The confidence and intensity may not be there for the holdovers from last year.
  17. Lee had a rough first half, only 1-2 wins, but he pitched a lot better than that. ERA in the 3s. Hasn't got run support when he's pitched well. He should rebound strongly the 2nd half with Utley and Howard back. Utley looked good today--HR and running very well. Hamels threw 128 pitches into the 8th inning--giving up the tying homer. Manual will get some heat for that. Can't imagine a Red Sox pitcher throwing 120 pitches, much less 128.
  18. Morales wasted on a third of an inning tonite. I don't know how the Sox can succeed if management continues to make dumbass decisions. Morales has been lights out as a starter (except the Yankee start), while Lester has been crap and needs some bullpen time to sort things out. That's the logical thing to do, but apparently logic escapes the front office (or V? who knows who makes decisions on this team).
  19. Speier has a good analysis at WEEI of Beckett--Josh is simply in decline. His heat is now 91-93, not 95. And when he grooves it in early innings, he gets hit. He has to throw more off speed stuff early. He still thinks he can throw the ball by batters. That could be his problem. He is no longer an ace pitcher, and the Sox have got to recognize that. They overrated their starting pitching at the start of the season, and have paid for it. The guy is 16MM dollar #3 starter.
  20. I think they'll decide in the next few days whether they think this club can make a run. Right now, it looks doubtful. If they decide not, I expect a few heads will roll.
  21. Lucchino may have to use a cattle prodder on Cherington to get anything big done in the next week.
  22. I don't know where you heard that (one of those NY pundits?), but I don't think so. The Phillies know their heart and soul are the big starters, and as long as those guys are effective, I don't think they'll deal any of them. They appear to have offered the kind of money to Hamels to keep him happy in Philly. That doesn't mean they couldn't unload salary in other places, however. Victorino is one rumor.
