  1. V is a wounded animal who should be put out of his misery.
  2. If I were Henry, I would offer Billy Beane the Moon and half of Mars to run the team in Boston.
  3. The fat lady has sung, packed up and left the theater.
  4. Aceves is being made into garbage by being overpitched. Maybe even deliberately by Valentine.
  5. Aceves in again. They wrecked Bard. Now they're going to wreck Aceves. Valentine really has it in for that guy. Bobby is pressing.
  6. Bad management can really wreck a team quickly. You can complain about the players, but the management calls the shots. If they screw up, it can wreck a team. That's why I say they need a clean slate upstairs if they are going to turn this thing around. Unfortunately, that doesn't usually happen unless the Company is about to fail. The Sox have indeed failed, but the fans are still coming and the company is solvent again thanks to the Dodgers.
  7. Looks like the talent evaluators have made up their minds on Iggy after a couple of games. LOL. Keep in mind that Iggy has been a victim of Red Sox politics this year. He looked good enough to stick in ST, then got hurt trying to steal home, of all things. He goes to Pawtucket, starts slowly, and has recently shown improvement in his hitting--so said his manager. Now he might be struggling a bit hitting. No surprise since all the FO talk has been negative about his hitting. He isn't getting a fair shake. The focus should be on his defense--his strength--not his hitting. He's playing a defensive position. Think positive. Build the kid's confidence. The same goes at catcher. Forget the HRs. The Red Sox have gone with Salty all season, a weak defensive catcher, and Aviles, a so-so SS. Both these guys hit HRs , but their OBPs suck--below .300--which negates those HRs. Too many outs, and not enough defense. The Sox have weak pitching, and should be placing more emphasis on defense at key positions--SS and catcher--to improve their pitching. They need more balance in their lineup.
  8. They have to give the prospects a chance, now that they have created some opportunities for them with holes in the roster. Thanks to the big deal, they even have a couple of pitching prospects who could make the rotation next year. But it takes time. You can't redo in one year what has been undone for the past several years. What's more important is you have the right people to remake the team. I doubt they do, since much the same cast that created the problems is still around. They need another VP of team personnel to come in from the outside and take Epstein's old job. Cherington, by the way, is a notch lower--something the media has conveniently overlooked.
  9. Werner, the other Red Sox owner, who lives in Disneyworld, California, said in a WEEI interview, that Cherington had done a good job this year, but the FO needed a "few more evaluators." That's another way of saying the Front Office sucks, but Ben is our appointed boy and he stays. He also said V had done a good job, but had no comment on whether V would return--which means he won't be. Part of the Red Sox problem this year is that V had zero support from Cherington and the Front Office, and hence never had the support of the holdover players. The only way to fix this team is to purge the management and start over again.
  10. He'll be a top of rotation candidate first. Ace potential there in a couple years.
  11. Bailey is a good enough closer if he can stay healthy. Their problem is they haven't had a setup guy all season, and it has thrown the bullpen out of whack. That's where Bard could firm things up if he can get back to his setup form.
  12. They got hamstrung by those $20 mil contracts. Lack of payroll flexibility, as you said. Henry got the opportunity to unload those contracts in 10 minutes at the owners meeting in mid-August, and he jumped. He is not likely to get into that same bind again.
  13. The talk is Aviles may wind up in St Louis to replace Furcal. I believe he has cleared waivers. That would free up Ciriaco and Iggy to play SS, and maybe Valencia to play 3B.
  14. Lackey must have infected Lester before the game. Gave up 2 runs immediately. I see the FO love affair with Aviles is on again.
  15. As I recall he had a monster contract year, hit a lot of HRs, and the Twins overpaid him to keep him. With his current output and his injury history, he is overpaid, regardless of his BA and OBP. He's a 12 HR per year guy right now making $20 mil per year for a long time, and he's a first baseman waiting to happen--without the power. He does do nice hair commercials on TV, too. I don't think Henry will be signing anybody for $20 mil per year for awhile. Maybe Ellsbury, but they have cheaper options in the OF. They may be better off trading Ells for a frontline pitcher.
  16. Can't judge the kid on a few at bats or games. His AAA manager says he is an improved hitter. You look for what he does defensively. That's where he has to pay dividends. And you play him in September--every game. And then again in ST. Same with Lav as catcher. Both these guys need some ML experience.
  17. Well, they certainly are trying their best to keep the Angels in the playoff hunt. The FO probably started this guy because they got him for Youkilis. But he isn't paying dividends tonite. I say the FO, because I think at this point Valentine is a non-factor--even less than earlier in the season.
  18. They don't move runners as a matter of FO policy. They think it costs outs. That's the distorted view of sabermetrics.
  19. The front office has lost 3 key people the last few years. Epstein, Hoyer and Byrnes. I guess Cherington was the most senior guy available when Epstein left. Considering Ben's track record as GM this year, I'm surprised the media hasn't questioned whether he has enough experience to make the kind of changes this team needs to become contenders again. I doubt he can do it on his own. They need a more senior type a slot above him at the VP level running the team--not Lucchino. Somebody from the outside who can control the infighting and make the necessary personnel changes. Henry and Lucchino are making a big mistake if they think they can do that themselves.
  20. I've been saying that quite awhile. But they have a front office that was in denial of the need for change until Henry pulled the plug at the owners meeting in mid August. They were in denial, I suspect, because they were the guys, with Epstein, who made all the mistakes, and they don't like to admit them. I say they can't really change direction and win again until Henry gets rid of the front office leadership--or hires a VP level guy to run the team--somebody like John Hart. Cherington is too much part of the problem to move this team in a different direction. Besides, he doesn't have the experience to rebuild a major team.
  21. Keep in mind the Yankees have no real budget, since their local cable TV money is out of sight. If they want a player, they buy him. Simple. It's amazing they haven't won every year, but player performance and injuries are unpredictable. Depends on serendipidity. They might be interested in Mauer or Hamilton. Most LHd hitters hit better in Yankee stadium. Hamilton is a risk, but the Yankees have taken risks on problem players before. The Yankees are always leverage against a team trying to re-sign a player. They drive up the price, as they have since the advent of free agency. The Players Union best friend.
  22. Mauer had a big contract year, signed a big contract, then lost his power stroke. Where have we heard of this before? It's so easy for these guys to power up their contract years, then deflate after the big guaranteed contract is signed. Baseball is just set up for this kind of larceny by the players. Stay away from this guy. He isn't the catcher he once was before his knee. And his power has disappeared. Besides, the Red Sox would be nuts to take on another $20 mil position contract, after they just gave away two. I doubt they would give that kind of money to a pitcher, at this point. The other thing is Doubront is one of their best pitchers right now. I'm not sure what he is doing on waivers, except maybe to clear him--but he won't clear. He's too good. Mauer doesn't get this club off .500. Right now, I don't see how that happens. Not unless they discover a few Middlebrooks' in their farm system.
  23. Yeah, he was good this year, until he hurt himself walking around the bases. At his age, you can't spend big bucks with multi year contracts on a 37yo guy who is showing he is fragile. Ok. You sign him for a year at $10 mil. Understand that he has missed the last two moinths of the season. That's about a third of the season. He was paid $14.5 mil to play 2/3 of the season this year--23 HR/60 RBI. That's pricey for his output. And his full season days are likely over at his age. Most teams these days like to rotate the DH among position players. That way, guys get at bats when they aren't in the field. And the team has more roster flexibility--adding a position player, while the team can carry as many as 12 pitchers.
  24. Absolutely. But he is loved by Lucchino and Henry, who are willing to ignore his selfish attitude. They figure he's a fan fixture. Plus he can hit, if he is in shape and healthy--open to question increasingly. The next mistake they make will be to waste a big 2 year contract on him, when nobody else would sign him for a year at
