  1. Time for the Red Sox to question their pitching methods. Every year, now, about this time, there is bullpen burnout. Last night, with Aceves, just another example. They have to be doing something wrong. It isn't just a question of personnel--it's how the personnel are used. Now I know it's hard to teach an old dog new tricks--especially for dogs who are up the management ladder. But look at how this team has played the game the last few years--sneering at stolen bases, refusing to move runners, using 5 relievers in 8-1 routes--winning--so nobody is available in close games when really needed. Players who take so long to rehab they get other injuries during rehab! This sort of BS which seems to come from the FO: Valentine seems to be constrained to the same operational procedures as Francona. Last night, before the game, V was asked who would be playing SS. His response was--well, I haven't heard yet. That tells you something. This club needs to clean house--upstairs--before it can get back on track. And you know it ain't gonna happen.
  2. Forget Felix. Can't wait to see that DeLaRosa.
  3. He'll win the Cy, for sure.
  4. This is no way to treat one of your best pitchers, who took the ball and closed all year--not great, but decent. I hear they patched everything up, and he might be available tonite?
  5. They should give Pedey a rest and play Aviles at 2B.
  6. Cherington finally gives in, and Iggy starts at SS. I hope he gets 4 hits tonite, and gives the finger to Hazen.
  7. Aceves is one of their few decent pitchers. The wrong guy to throw in the street. Valentine made a mistake not communicating with him. He has had all season to exert his authority, and hasn't done it very effectively. Now is the wrong time--on the wrong player. Maybe the season has finally gotten to Bobby.
  8. Can they use your money? That would make their decision a lot easier. Durability has finally become an issue with Papi.
  9. Gomez just got named IL MVP. For cripes sake, play the guy at 1B. He's an MVP. Iggy and Lav all-stars. Ditto. Play Iggy. Who's deciding who plays on the Red Sox? Valentine? Cherington? More likely, Cherington who is s-l-o-w.
  10. I hope they don't go out and spend all that money they just saved foolishly on guys who are past their prime. Henry should put a lid on that, as he has put a lid on spending this year. He was the one who just cleaned house of all those exorbitant contracts Epstein--and the current FO-- stuck him with. He clearly is viewing this team more as a business than a hobby right now. The money now has to be spent wisely. That's why dumping money on old Papi is very risky, and may be unwise.
  11. Here's a different media perspective on Papi: http://bostonherald.com/sports/columnists/view.bg?articleid=1061156296&srvc=sports&position=4 Buckley says putting all those hard won bucks on a 37yo DH who gets hurt trotting around the bases on somebody else's HR is a red flag. I have to agree, though Cody Ross says Papi is an anchor in the middle of the lineup--when he's playing. So it's a tough call. It seems that the Sox are getting a lot younger--going in a different direction with emphasis on their prospects. Papi represents the past. You hate to see them spending big bucks on the past.
  12. The bottom line on the Red Sox is when they get good pitching, they almost always win. They always seem to have enough hitting--no matter what the lineup mix, injuries etc.
  13. I posted Cody Ross' blog on ESPNBoston in another thread--here it is: http://espn.go.com/blog/boston/red-sox/post/_/id/22324/ross-diary-on-megadeal-media-fantasy-football Cody says Ortiz is important to anchor the middle of the lineup, so I'll go with his judgement. You always have to listen to the players on these things--much more so than the front office.
  14. The medical people have assured him he is in no danger of that if he plays with a little pain--with the injury he has. Foot sprains take a while to go away. I know--I have one right now I'm jogging with.He says he doesn't want to play with pain because it takes his concentration away. They are going to give him some pain killers and another week or two of rest.
  15. Stay away from the big tickets out there. Develop the young players. Give them a chance. That means unloading Ortiz, too. He hits but is a liability in every other way. A one dimensional guy who is taking up a roster spot for a position player.
  16. Looks like they'll gamble on keeping their top 3 intact. Lee and Halladay have had sub-par years, and that's the real reason why the Phillies aren't making the playoffs--not the hitting. Pretty much like the Red Sox. They are heavily invested in pitching, and have no choice really but to keep the rotation intact. Plus they are paying Pap big money to close for top starters. From the Red Sox view, stay away. Lee is getting old and could be in decline. Another case of staying with their principles. No multi year contracts to guys over 32. And that includes Ortiz. They haven't been wrong about this yet. No time to change now.
  17. Just watched Gasper and Finn video on bringing back Ortiz. Finn, the smarter one on baseball, says no--but thinks they will. Gasper says bring him back for 2 years at 15 mil per year. I say it's a waste of money at his age and durability. He can't stay on the field even as a DH. And what's the guarantee he doesn't revert to the declining form of a couple years ago? He gets a multi year and goes out of shape. To me, this is an example of spending foolishly--wasting money because it's available. Besides, the guy has behaved like a prima donna the past year. Not great for the team. DHs don't make big money. And old ones don't get multi year contracts. It's about time Henry and Lucchino got tough with these players they have spoiled all to hell the past few years. It's nuts to give big money to a guy like Ortiz with the team desperately needing to develop its young players. Are they concerned he might go to the Yankees? The Yankees are smart enough not to pay him that kind of dough. They have enough old rich guys of their own.
  18. The next step will be getting a new manager as soon as the season is over. And the FO will get their way this time. Maybe Bogar. Hopefully Mills. Bobby V got suckered taking this job, but he'll get away with 2 years' pay--they can now afford to pay him off.
  19. Maybe if you slipped Cherington in there, too, Seattle wouldn't even notice.
  20. The first thing they need to do is give their prospects a decent look. Guys like Gomez and Iggy and Ciriaco and maybe a few others. Iggy still hasn't played SS yet, and that is a black mark against Cherington. Aviles should not be holding anybody back, at this point. They could have a very good defensive infield with Iggy at SS, MBrooks at 3B and Loney at 1B. The outfield looks fine. The big problem remains the pitching--and the way they manage the pitching.
  21. That sounds like something Cherington might do. But Lucchino would stop him.
  22. Melancon disappears. If Bard can't make it back to setup, then Aceves will do. Bailey closes--until the next time he runs into a door and goes on the DL. Aceves fills an important role in mid to late relief or 5th starter.
  23. Their pitching sucks, and Aceves is one of the better ones. He's been asked to do everything this year except carry a waterbucket. Not well managed. You want to keep the good ones.
  24. Bailey IS a closer. That's what he was brought here for. He should be the closer, period. Valentine should have called Aceves in his office, and told him--"hey, Bailey is ready to close, so he's closing now. Thanks for filling in. here's what we'd like you to do..." That apparently didn't happen, which tells you something about communication on the Red Sox.
  25. Forget Felix. The Yankees will get him first if he becomes available. Getting Felix is way above Cherington's head. This Dominican kid DeLaRosa could be the next Pedro. Pedro is his idol, and he certainly resembles Pedro on the mound, though he's a bit more overhanded. I haven't seen his other pitches enough but his heat is devastating. 97 after Tommy John. And with movement.
