  1. When was the last time Damon played CF? That's what he was signed for. The Sox were never going to pay him $13 mil to play LF. But in NY, the batboy gets that kind of money--almost.
  2. Can't believe they want the $8 mil option. The rest of it is negotiable. Wagner changed his tune when Pap mouthed off to the media. Wagner isn't going to make any difference, anyways. How many relievers do they need? What they need is a reliable no.3 starter.
  3. Beckett has had a stretch of good starts, and now a couple of bad ones. Maybe a sign of fatigue. Athletes are like race horses. They peak in performance, decline and then need a rest--which starters don't usually get. He should skip a start. Sabathia is so fat and out of shape early, it takes him half a season to get sharp. Being with the Yankees, and pitching well as he does down the stretch, he's a good bet for the Cy Young.
  4. The NY media would like nothing better than to keep Wagner away from the Red Sox. Pap and Delcarmen are playing right into their hands. Delcarmen is a marginal pitcher the Red Sox have shown a lot of patience with. Don't be surprised if that patience ends off-season. I was impressed with Saito the other night. Maybe he has another year left in him. Pap, by the way, also said a lot of good things about Wagner which have gone unnoticed. His remarks about Gagne show that some in the bullpen are still pissed about Tito going to this guy for four straight blown saves in September. I have to agree. Epstein blew that one. Wagner won't get that chance, for sure.
  5. Pap should shut up. The media is now trying to create a conflict between Pap and Wagner. Too much individualism on the Red Sox. Not enough team. Maybe that says something about the management. If Pap doesn't shut up, he will write his ticket out of Boston.
  6. Ha. I'm watching this game tonite, and I'm thinking, "The Yankees are a big bore." Why? Because they make a mockery of Baseball. They have FOUR $20 million dollar players in their lineup tonite. Including that blimp out on the mound. How long can that guy last in his contract? I hear the media gushing about the Yankees. Cripes, with the team they've bought, they ought to be undefeated. Anything less than a Championship for this team is a total failure. You can't say that for any other team in Baseball. And you know what? The Phillies can beat them. They have three good lefty starters now, and that can beat the Yankees in their park.
  7. They sure could use one or two long relievers. That's what's missing in the BP.
  8. It's been a while since they've had an offensive game like that. The Japanese kid looked pretty gritty out there. Just make sure he doesn't get any ideas about pitching for Japan in one of those World things. Where did Bard get that changeup? He gets it over, but grooves his fastball. He needs to get the straight heat away from the middle of the plate. He can get batters out just changing speeds from 98-99.
  9. Yeah, Wilpon lost a bundle in the Madoff scandal. I read $700 million. The Mets were spending pre-season, buying a closer and setup guy (Putz was a salary dump). But they are in a different mode now. Minaya will have to work for his salary. Sports is a hobby for owners, and when they get squeezed financially, the hobby goes first.
  10. So Tito told Penny to go hang himself? Maybe the Cardinals will claim him off waivers.
  11. Papi needs a hot September. Come on, big guy.
  12. In their current scheme of things, it seems they never have enough relievers. They are using 3 or 4 every game--win or lose. Part of the problem is they have no long relievers--everybody throws an inning. I don't think that's very good policy. You have to have a couple of guys who can pitch 2-3 innings in the middle of a game. Especially when most of your starters are only going 100 pitches and 5 innings. They have put together a strong bullpen this year, but how they are using it is a separate issue.
  13. Dice-K was the season killer. Sure, other things like Ortiz declining further and injuries to Lowell and Lugo limiting their defense have hurt. But they haven't had a no.3 starter all season. Wake was good only when Beckett and Lester were bad early. Tito has a weakness in that he stays with ageing veterans for too long, and doesn't make adjustments quickly enough. You can go back to Gagne and Timlin, and this year Ortiz and now Tek.Tek shouldn't be a starter at this point, as most everybody except Tito thinks. Ortiz should have been dropped in the order much earlier--where he has hit better. Granted Epstein didn't provide him with a suitable replacement for Dice-K mid-season, so he shares some of the blame. That was Theo's biggest mistake.
  14. I've talked to one or two of the older HOF players. What they don't like about the current players is the greed. They want every last dollar. They have little or no team loyalty. Why else would a player have a snake like Boras for an agent? I think, also, there is some resentment because they feel underpaid in their careers. LOL. As for Rice, I think his comments were a bit disjointed, and not well thought out. Rice isn't very articulate, and I think he got his remarks mixed up. He probably wasn't thinking about steroids when he mentioned Jeter. That came up later. He was thinking about greed, though Jeter doesn't stand out in my mind there. The other two, for sure.
  15. It's the money that's changed the game and the attitudes of the players. Older players like Rice resent the new generation of players who are big money first. And it's not just Rice. A lot of the older HOFers feel that way.I've heard it before. I don't know what he was talking about with Jeter. Maybe money. Can't be steroids. But he sure is taking a pasting from that NY-based media. LOL. I agree with the other poster about Griffey. Always thought he was juiced. You hit 50 HRs for a few years, get your big contract, then start getting chronic injuries and decline. That smells steroids. Typical side effects. It's a Faustian pact. There has been a lot of that the last 10 years. I wish the title of this thread was not so moronish.
  16. Did the same in NY, bringing that no-name kid in down 2-0. Can't figure him. I don't think he takes games that seriously until September. I don't like the handling of the pitching because it kills a club mentally to be down early by so much. And who knows what effect it will have on that kid Bowden. You can ruin a kid's confidence. Penny is cruising for a DFA, the way he is pitching right now. Smoltz in NY, now Penny in Boston. Maybe missing the playoffs will force the management to look at what they did wrong this year.
  17. They should hang a white flag on the CF pole. A disgrace starting Penny. This club needs NOT to make the playoffs. The management needs to take a good look at what it's doing.
  18. Looks like Bowden got his christening. They love to take kid pitchers right out of the minors and dump them right into the frying pan. Yuk. I was figuring 15-1 for this game. I might be right.
  19. The Yankees are showing that if you have a half a billion bucks to sign the top three FAs, it can make a difference. LOL.
  20. I said Penny needed some prayers tonite. Doesn't look like he got many.
  21. This is a surprise. Now why didn't they have Wagner to start tonite instead of Penny? Sure, he's a closer but anybody but Penny. Maybe they'll go with 13 pitchers. One starter for 5 innings and 4 relievers. I don't know what they're doing with their pitching, but I wonder if they are making the most of it.
  22. I'd prefer Byrd starting tonite over Penny. The Yankees saved their best starters for this series. The Red Sox did not. After winning 8 in a row against NY, they certainly have been giving them generous opportunities to catch up.
  23. I read Masterson had a good start yesterday for the Guardians vs the Angels. No ERs in 7 innings? You wonder if the Sox hadn't signed those retreads, Penny and Smoltz, and had given more starting opportunities to Masterson and Buchholz, whether they would be further along right now. Granted they dealt Masterson for a terrific player, VMart, but maybe both those young pitchers should have been given more starting opportunities earlier in the season. They certainly couldn't have done any worse. Religious fans need to say a prayer for Penny against the Yankees tonight. LOL.
  24. There's a rumor Tito voted here for Vmart. But he'll never admit it.
