  1. Regarding players like Hanley R. and Adrian G., Epstein tends to get hung up trying to get guys who are out of reach. He's better off focussing on more available targets at the trade deadline. They could have used another SS--almost anybody who can play defense. I think part of their problem is they are using 12 pitchers, which cuts down your bench and leaves you vulnerable to injuries.
  2. How many walks does Drew have? I haven't checked the stats, but I bet he has more than Ellsbury. They should give Ellsbury a bonus for every walk he gets. He does not walk enough leading off.
  3. Papi had that spike in June, and that has kept him in the lineup. But he hasn't done much since, and you wonder how long the FO will keep him in the lineup when Youks comes back. Especially with Lowell hot. Off thread, I'm watching Pedro tonite, and he looks pretty damn good. Throwing 92-93, and splitting hairs with it. Very tough on RHders with that 3/4 delivery. Nice to watch a HOF pitcher. Still has a lot of style out there.
  4. Green is a backup, not a regular for this type of team. But then backup SSs are usually the good field, no-hit type, which Green is not. Theo has not had good luck at SS.
  5. I don't recall the situation. I thought they had a SS (Renteria?) and needed a 2nd baseman. I also think they had Hanley R. at SS for the future. I would guess Pedroia's range at SS is good enough to finish out the season-compared to what they have. But they would have to find a 2nd baseman--they don't have another good one in the minors. So, it's a bit far-fetched.
  6. Harang hasn't had a good year, but he's been unlucky at times--not much run support. He's a big K guy, and might be better than anything they have beyond Lester and Beckett. I don't know about his soundness, or his salary. Might be too rich. I also think Epstein is still thinking Buchholz is going to come through. But that 2.0 WHIP will have to come way down for him to be consistent. Grudz at this point is more a 2nd baseman.
  7. Pedroia was a SS at Pawtucket, as I recall. They moved him to 2B when he came up to Boston, because they needed a 2nd baseman. Turns out he's an all-star 2nd baseman--one of the best I've ever seen. Pedroia is the kind of competitor who can play anywhere. He could be a very good SS.He came up as a SS. But who is to play 2B? And will they move an all-star to another position? I don't think so. They are having trouble with taking a sub-par Ortiz out of the lineup, so they have a mindset.
  8. They lost it because Beckett was hurt. They would have been in the WS against the Phillies if Beckett hadn't been hurt and sub-par. That's the point.
  9. Drew has been a good player for the Sox. His problem is they had to pay Boras money to get him. That means his salary is inflated by 30-40%. Boras is a thorn in the side of MLB. Everybody outside of NY hates him.
  10. I can't figure why the Sox seem to freely overspend with some FAs, often foolishly, and then become tight with their own successful players. Both Pap and Bay should be signed before they even get close to the FA market, because their price may well go sky high. Bay has slumped lately, and that has made the delay in extending him in their favor. But you know he is going to get to his career averages before the season is out. They have to realize they aren't going to get him for Youks money--it's not the same situation. As for Pap, he deserves his payday, off what he has done--for sure.
  11. Yeah--but the Red Sox don't go anywhere without a healthy Beckett. Look at the playoffs last year.
  12. I don't know what Theo is going to pull out of his hat for SS, but it's hard to believe they will play out the season with just Green and Woodward? at SS. LOL. What a mess. Maybe Pedroia will walk the plank and move to SS.
  13. Yankee fans should stay in their own chatgroups. This is a Red Sox chatgroup. That's why I'm here. If I were a Yankee fan, I would be in a Yankee chatgroup. Yankee fans in Red Sox chatgroups (or vice versa) are just there to cause trouble. That's my view. This thread, by the way, is in the wrong forum. This is the talkSox forum. It should be moved.
  14. To get somebody thru waivers, it will have to be a player who is grossly overpaid right now, so no other team will claim him. My guess is they can find such a player, if they want to overpay--probably for next year as well. A Guzman or Young type. Or maybe Hardy. Or Cabrera in Oakland.
  15. When the going gets tough, the manager has to get creative. And that doesn't mean bringing in a no-name minor league pitcher in a 2-0 game against NY--a kid who promptly gets DFA'd after the game. And it means playing smallball--scratching a run out by the usual methods. The Red Sox play for big innings--period. Tito is a nice guy, but he isn't intense--at least before October.
  16. 3 things unexpected have killed the Red Sox this year: 1) no no.3 starter. Dice-K has contributed zero this year. 2) the demise of Ortiz as a DH. Batting him 3rd for first two 2 months of zero hitting. 3) the loss of Lowrie the whole season. No SS. Epstein corrected none of these problems before the trade deadline. He gambled on Lowrie--and lost. He traded for VMart, but won't replace Ortiz at DH--which negates some of VMart's impact. Tek still remains the main catcher, so VMart is reduced to a backup role in several positions.
  17. I read someone on the Red Sox denied they had put in a waiver claim on Guzman. I also read a different MLB source said they had. Could be they put in a waiver claim on some other SS like Hardy. I would guess they are very hot for any SS right now. They don't really have one.
  18. I don't think Tito earned his pay the last 4 games. Granted he was left short on injuries, but his game managing left something to be desired. Putting no-name rookie pitchers into close games is questionable--not with the so-called best bullpen around. And Bard was not a good choice in that situation yesterday--not in that park with all those HR hitters coming up. That situation called for a lot more experience--Oki and Ram for sure. The Red Sox like to pamper their pitchers with pitch counts, down to the minor league level. But Tito seems to like to put young pitchers too soon into the frying pan--in the wrong situations. I recall the Clay Meredith fiasco a few years ago. Yesterday was not the time for Bard to assume the setup role.
  19. My prediction: Sabathia will win it if the Yankees win the division. He will finish strong, and it's NY.
  20. I guess they don't have much choice right now. They are over a barrel. Of course they might try Youks at SS. Heck, that's pretty close to LF.
  21. I think Tito's job is less secure than Theo's. Though Tito is a popular guy. But his 1 inning per relief pitcher regimen has worn the bullpen thin. The Yankees used a guy for 3 innings in the extra-inning game the other night while Tito was shuffling pitchers every inning, and had nobody left in the end but Tazawa. That was followed up by bringing a no-name from the minors to come into a 2-0 game yesterday. And then there's Youks playing LF--not easy in Yankee Stadium. Where is Reddick? And the persistence in keeping Ortiz in a lineup that isn't hitting. I see a lot of disarray there, right now. The club is sinking fast partly because of bad decisions.
  22. You know, you never see these responsibilites spelled out in the media. It would be good if the fans knew just who is responsible for doing what. I recall reading during the ARod non-deal a couple of years ago that big money decisions were made by a Committee of 4: Epstein, Lucchino, Werner? and Henry. Don't know if that's changed or how that affects trades or FA signings. Epstein & Co. certainly have done an excellent job in player development. I agree FA signings and trades have been poor too often. But the recent Bay. LaRoche and VMart trades have been strong--though I think he missed on his priorities (i.e., a starting pitcher). And VMart's offensive impact would be much stronger if he would replace Ortiz in the lineup. I get the impression Epstein is torn between developing home grown players and signing or trading for proven veterans. There is an obvious money benefit in developing your own.The problem is only a few pan out, and the rest lose their value quickly if they don't. I would argue it is less risky to trade an unproven talent for a proven one--if you can afford to take on salary.
  23. The interesting thing is we don't really know how the strings are pulled on the Red Sox. Who is responsible for what. Who built the farm system? Who picks the draft selections? Who hires the staff? My guess is there are others involved besides Epstein for most decisions. It just isn't public knowledge.
