  1. You have to admit that was a big HR last night. Seemed to ignite the team to a win. Maybe he hits better in the lower part of the order. This club ain't done yet, particularly if Buchholz and Tazawa can come through. What was disturbing to me was Buchholz as a pinch runner. The Sox now find it necessary to have 12 pitchers, with the 1 reliever per inning/100 pitch starter mindset. That means one less bench player, and starting pitchers as pinch runners who don't run the bases very well, as Buchholz showed.
  2. The way the fans support this team, they deserve more than what they have been getting lately. I'm disturbed that the best lineup isn't out there every game right now. If they don't make the playoffs, there might be some hell to pay.
  3. well, Papi hit 6th in June. Maybe he gets better pitches hitting down in the order. Has to be a reason why he spiked in June.
  4. Papi hits a dinger, and he's back. Or what? Maybe he has to be reminded to eat his spinach. Any explanation about where Ellsbury is?
  5. Like I say, Tito just isn't intense enough. Maybe it's his health.
  6. The season according to Tito starts in September. If he isn't hurt or sick, he belongs in the lineup.
  7. The Sox seem to have a mindset about relievers being relievers and starters being starters. The exception was Masterson. I hope that isn't true for their other younger pitchers.
  8. Kotchman is a lot cheaper next year. LaRoche will be a FA. Epstein said they made the deal for LaRoche knowing the Braves were interested in a flip for Kotchman.
  9. I think Holliday will stay in StL. He's hitting behind Pujols, and he's doing well. I don't think Henry is in a mood to deal with Boras again some time soon. I expect Bay will be extended by the end of the season, after his seasonal numbers average out. They would be foolish not to sign him before he hits the open market. I think he'll get Drew money.
  10. That's a fair question. LOL. One of those defensive stats which are fine but can be misleading because they depend on the number of chances. It's like OPS, etc. for hitting. You have to have a lot of at bats for the numbers to be meaningful. I wouldn't trust any such numbers for AGon recently, since he's been injured and hasn't played enough for the numbers to be significant. A scout can tell more just by watching him in the field for a few games.
  11. Probably the best option they could have gotten right now in terms of value. It won't cost them much, and I'm sure that's a consideration vs Guzman, for example. Hard to say where AGon is right now, coming off injuries. Seems to be hot with the bat. If he can be steady at SS, that's probably enough. Lugo is on a tear right now in StL. He looked a step slower in the field post injury in Boston. Maybe they didn't wait long enough on him. They didn't wait much on Cabrera or Renteria, either.
  12. I don't see the Ortiz issue as steroids, or popularity, or past performance or salary. The issue is what is needed for this 150 million dollar team to get to the playoffs. They have to do what's best for winning. If they don't do that, they probably won't make the playoffs, and they will be cheating themselves and their fans. It's about the team, not individuals.
  13. Good outing by Buchholz. Encouraging. Maybe he and Tazawa will save them. But once again, you wonder where Tito's head is at, sitting Drew and Pedroia at this time. They are going to have to DFA Papi so that Tito can't play him.
  14. The story on Smoltz I'm getting now is the Sox wanted him to go to the minors and come back as a reliever. Smoltz refused to go to the minors (understandable), but it isn't clear he refused to go to the bullpen. I don't know why a pitcher like Smoltz would need to go to the minors first to be a reliever. He's a former all-star closer. Makes no sense. I think he can be effective coming out of the bullpen for an inning or two, off what he has shown as a starter, and if he comes out of the bullpen for another team at the Sox expense, they have missed the boat.
  15. Papi is a puzzle. He had that monster June after doing nothing in April-May. And now he's back to April-May. Tito is very loyal to his veterans, obviously, and he has stayed with Papi through thick and thin. He's hoping lightening will strike again, but the Sox can't afford a hole in the lineup like Papi right now, especially batting in the middle of the order. They need to get guys who are hitting in the middle. That means Bay, Lowell, Drew, Youks and VMart. It's encouraging to see Bay hitting again. Wish they would re-sign him before the end of the season. He's a must-sign. Will they DFA Papi? That's one way to get him out of the lineup. It's a dilemma.
  16. Hey John, no bullpen in Boston, no pay in Boston.
  17. Yeah, it couldn't have come at a worse time. But clearly, there was provocation. The Tigers are in the hunt, too. Some intensity from Francona to light up this team instead of from one of his best players might have helped. I understand Tito has some blood pressure problems, but maybe one of his coaches could light it up. The club definitely needed something like this. Meanwhile, Toronto gives away one of their best hitters on waivers just before they go into Yankee stadium for a series. When it rains, it pours.
  18. I read this morning Smoltz refused a bullpen assignment. ?? Was that in his contract? For $5 million, they have to start the guy, or nothing? I find that hard to believe. If he refused a BP assignment in Boston, how can he take one in St Louis, which is considering him for the BP? Maybe a case of muddled media. I don't know what's in Smoltz's contract, but I doubt the Red Sox would go that far in terms of restricting his role--especially with his closer experience. I think the Sox would be better off working their starters in through the bullpen, anyways. Make them earn a starting role.
  19. I think Ellsbury's OBP is .348 . That isn't good enough for a leadoff guy. If he walked more, he'd be up around .380. Theriot just fouled off 6 pitches in a row against Pedro. That's hard to do. Wonder what the record is.
  20. Pedro is gonna need that 6-pack in an inning or two. He deserves it. Pitching good.
  21. Maybe better than Buchholz and his 2.0 WHIP. LOL.
  22. Ellsbury--30 walks, Drew--61 walks. The leadoff guy should walk more. I know--I was a leadoff guy many moons ago. Ellsbury needs to work the count better.
  23. I'm watching Pedro in Chicago, where it's now 12-1 Phillies. Pedro looks good, throwing 92-93 and painting the corners. Nice to watch a HOF pitcher.
  24. Well, the starters aren't complaining. Imagine getting $10 million to throw 100 pitches. And all a reliever has to do is to throw 1 inning. How did they get to that point?
