  1. It might be tough to send Lackey to the moon, but I'm all for it.
  2. Now that Epstein and Cherington are dealing for Epstein's compensation, the chances of Lackey being involved are increased. Maybe a 3-way with San Diego. Looks like a good fit. Everybody has a chance to come away smiling here.
  3. Ha. No. The guy's avatar is a pic of the young Ted Williams. Had to tell him that story.
  4. You know, the ball is in Epstein's court right now. He has some control over what the Red Sox compensation will be. He could put Lackey on the table in some way, to make amends and as a parting gift. Maybe that 3-way deal with San Diego. We'll see.
  5. I don't think Crawford is a good fit in Boston. He likes to run, and the Red Sox don't run. At least, they don't use the stolen base as an integral part of the offense. Ellsbury pretty much stopped stealing bases after 30-35 or so. He's a 30-30 guy, and that's enough for Boras to get him $20 million per season. Ells was maybe stealing for his big contract. Pedey stole 20+ bases--a surprise. . But the Sox aren't a speed team. When a guy walks, he doesn't steal to move into scoring position. That was noticeable down the stretch in TV games. Imagine Crawford sitting on 1B, without trying to steal? It happened. Basically, they want to prevent that out. Remember Roberts crucial steal against the Yankees in 04? That might not happen today. Today, it's all about 'Out Prevention'.
  6. I doubt there's a sensible fan out there who wants to see Beckett traded. All is not what meets the eye. He was actually one of the hardest workers on the team--and it showed up in the excellent season he had--save for his last couple of starts. On the other hand, Lackey is a goner. Unanimously.
  7. Dem's fightin' words for a newbie. You apparently never had chemistry in high school. If you ever went to high school. Epstein is one very lucky dude.
  8. Getting back to Crawford, let's see what Bill James projected for him in 2011 vs what he actually did--and also what James projected for Kalish--who wound up staying in Pawtucket and getting hurt, mainly because the Sox had two ageing players, Cameron and Drew, taking up space in RF. Tells you a lot about the Sox. HR RBI BA SB OBP OPS Kalish (James) 20 82 .271 43 .340 .791 Crawford(James) 14 71 .300 42 .350 .803 Crawford(act) 11 56 .255 18 .289 .694 Not that Bill James is always right, but these stats tell you something about why Epstein is no longer the GM of the Red Sox. He made some bad decisions here.
  9. Apparently Kenney, the Cubs President, has been the guy stonewalling players to Boston for Epstein--for personal reasons. "personal" = "turf territory"? That would figure, since Epstein will also carry the title "President." Maybe that's why the deal was cut, so Epstein could do his own negotiating with Cherington, as Cubs GM. I would expect one or two of their top prospects--one high A like McNutt, one low A. Maybe both pitchers.
  10. Your Avatar brought back some memories: So I have breakfast with this guy and his wife in a Palm Springs hotel some years ago. I say I'm from Boston. He says. You know, Ted Williams was in my outfit in Pensacola during WWII. I knew him well. He was a great guy--well-liked by everybody.
  11. I understand Epstein just missed getting hit in the ass as he went out the door. What a pity.
  12. Buchholz says in Abraham's Globe column tonite that Beckett was a hard worker this year. (Sorry I can't copy and paste across icons on this damn windows 7/E9.) I would have to believe him, based on Beckett's performance this year, except for his last couple of starts. Buchholz also says Young was laid back and not as demanding as Farrell. One of the Red Sox problems is they had too many coaches that were like the manager--laid back and easy going. They forgot about what it takes to win.
  13. And make sure the door hits him square in the ass on the way out.
  14. I hope the door hit him in the ass on his way out.
  15. It's not realistic for the Cubs to give up their best player (Castro) or pitcher (Garza). But they should be giving up two of their top 10 prospects. That's obvious from the Guillen deal.
  16. Agreed. I think that's one of the reasons Epstein interviewed the Cubs. Epstein had a terrible year last year. And bad judgement about the Red Sox needs mid-season. He blew it. Blew the team chemistry. Salty was not a disaster, because the kid worked hard. But there were better options in Napoli and Martin. In the long run, Salty may be OK. But Tek has to go. They need a younger backup.
  17. Cherington should shut up. They should all shut up. These guys are pretty stupid, PR-wise. The media is taking them to lunch.
  18. Somebody send these poll results to Larry Lucchino. In the current PR atmosphere in Boston, there is no doubt Lucchino needs to come away with something of value for Epstein--or keep him.
  19. Ha. Who's 'they'? There are so many conflicting reports out there, you don't know what the score is. That Kaplan guy in Chicago says he is hearing McNutt. None of these "top" Cubs prospects are worth anywhere close to the attention they are receiving. It almost doesn't make any difference. My guess is Ricketts doesn't get Epstein unless he gives Lucchino somebody who looks good for PR in Boston--which is at a low point right now. That's something Ricketts didn't figure on.
  20. Cafardo has an interesting tidbit today about maybe Bud Black for manager. He's a pitching coach, too, and God knows, they need a pitching coach. And he's worked with Lackey before. Personally, I'd rather see Bud Black work with Lackey in San Diego. Lackey is a PR disaster in Boston at this point. He's gone.
  21. I think I'll defer that question to my assistant, Larry Lucchino. With instructions to hold Epstein to his last contract year if he doesn't get what he's asking for. I would also tell him to put a fast deadline on these negotiations, which have dragged on far too long while the Boston media has been drowning the Red Sox in beer--probably Budweiser.
  22. I predicted the hot Cardinals in 6, but their luck seems to be running out in the 9th in the game 2. A couple of scratch hits, a stolen base and a sac fly. Tie game. Another sac fly. 2-1 Rangers. Cardinals up in 9th. Feliz throwing 99. Walk. The next guy tries to bunt two balls up around his head, then strikes out on a ball. The next guy strikes out on another bad pitch low and inside. Poor at bats. Next guy flies out. Feliz couldn't find the strike zone the first 3 batters, but the Cardinals helped him. The Rangers now have the advantage in the Series.
  23. Epstein has agreed to eat 25% --for lunch in Kenmore square--if the Sox release him to the Cubs.
