  1. Cherington is an easy way out for Henry. But watch out. Byrnes was a failure in Arizona, and Beane's brainy asst Depodesta, also a failure as a GM. That leaves Hoyer in San Diego, and it's too early to say about him. They would be wise to survey the field, if they haven't already. Is Beane available? Cashman? the TB guy? Riccardi?I hope they have a good idea of what Cherington will do before they hire him. They don't want warmed over Theo. He has to have some new ideas.
  2. Cash lucked out with his starting pitching this year, and Granderson has become Grandyman. The Yankees are in more trouble than the Sox long term--a lot of age in their top players. And their pitching came down to earth in the playoffs, as many suspected it would. Cash has more money to spend in NY, so it's hard to judge him. The Sox laid the fart heard around world in September, and the repercussions were inevitable. A prediction: the other team elevated by the media this year is the NFL's Eagles. So far a failure. It's still early, but Andy Reid's head is on the chopping block.
  3. All good decisions. They dodged a bullet with Pedro. He wanted 4 years--he got it from the Mets, but lasted 1.5 years before he blew his arm out. They made a mistake with Damon. He was worth it just based on team chemistry and spirit. One of Epstein's biggest failures was his lack of understanding about the value of a player to team chemistry and role playing. He was looking too hard at OBP/OPS and age. He also thought you could change veteran players' positions like checkers on a board. He didn't learn from Ellsbury--getting AdGon and moving Youks. He was better off keeping VMart and Beltre, and dumping one-dimensional Ortiz. And getting an Ellsbury clone in Crawford on a team that doesn't run was another mistake.
  4. I wouldn't blame AdGon--first year player. Doesn't know the ropes. I would be more concerned about his 2nd half decline. What's the story there. Keep in mind these guys are all millionaires--including the manager--grossly overpaid because they are in the TV entertainment business, basically. This is what can happen when you have an easy-going organization from the top down. With Steinbrenner, it doesn't happen.
  5. I think Abraham et al knew a lot of what was going on with the Sox for quite awhile--the lack of conditioning, etc. They hinted of it occasionally, but didn't make an issue until after Tito was let go. That's when the floodgates opened. And there is probably still more they know.
  6. I read no major league players are involved in the Epstein deal. I suspect they want Epstein out, and aren't going to make it that difficult for the Cubs to get him. Obviously, some sort of compensation is warranted--probably a minor league player or two. It's amazing that just when Epstein was in Chicago last Fri and Sat, under the radar, I'm posting I think he's already in Chicago negotiating under the table. The Sox handled that very well--keeping the media out of it. Though I suspect the media has known a lot about the Sox they weren't telling for quite awhile.
  7. I think it's too early to vote on this. Depends on who they hire--manager, coaches, GM. They have to get rid of all the rot first. Henry/Werner/Lucky need a change in attitude. The whole organization got soft.
  8. He's getting 5 years and $15 million--and a promotion. For s***ing the bed in Boston the last 3 years. He's luckier than Lucky.
  9. Clemens was unhittable that season with the Sox. And he was also unhittable in that game. He was cruising. I watched the game. They would have won the Series if he had stayed in the game. It was a shocker when he was taken out--in those days pitchers still threw CGs, especially in that situation. Bringing a rookie reliever in there was inexcusible. It ruined Schiraldi's career. Clemens probably juiced up in Toronto to win those Cy Youngs--but not in Boston in the 80s. He's not the only guy to lie about steroids in Congress. They all did--and got away with it, too. He was just a kid in the 80s--a different era. Mac was a dumb manager. I've talked to players he managed.
  10. Stapleton was his late inning defensive replacement. I think I said Stevenson? in another post. It was Mac's fault for not replacing Buckner with Stapleton on the field. I also don't believe Mac's story about removing Clemens because he had a blister. Clemens denied it. Jean Yawkey had the final word. She fired Mac in spring training.
  11. Ode to Theo: "My heart cries for you, dies for you, cries for you. And my heart longs for you, please come back to me." --Guy Mitchell
  12. Love it. Just as I predicted. Everything under the table. No media. I hear one of Epstein's friends said that Starbucks sighting in Chicago on Sat was "probably real". Unfortunately, I understand Lackey was not with him. Now, Who do I predict will be the next GM? How the hell do I know? Maybe Henry's marketing analyst. If it's Cherington, I hope it isn't business as usual.
  13. RIP Feller I met Bob Feller at a sports dinner about 10-12 years ago. One of the greats. He was on the USS Alabama in WWII, and one of his bunkmates was the older brother of a kid who lived across the street from me. There is a picture of Feller and his bunkmates on the Alabama in his autobiography, and one of them is this kid's older brother. I mentioned it to Feller, but he didn't remember. He was in his 80s.
  14. The Globe says the Red Sox face "difficult" decisions about Wakefield and Varitek. Difficult? Heck, those are the easiest decisions they have to make. The Globe has flip-flopped lately about the Red Sox, if you've been following them.
  15. They can't get canned, but they can be run out of town.
  16. BS. Not in that game. Clemens was unhittable, and Mac brainfarted taking him out and lied about it afterward. Jean Yawkey was furious and fired him the next spring--in spring training.
  17. Buckner didn't belong in the lineup late--his defensive replacement was Stephenson--in that situation. He had bad ankles, and had to wear special shoes. But the manager, McNamara, did a few classic Grady Little brainfarts the last two games to hand the Series to the Mets. The other notable one was replacing Clemens with a lead in the 8th inning of the 6th game--with the rookie Schiraldi. Clemens was unhittable and the champagne was on ice in the clubhouse. Classic 'don't fix what ain't broke' overmanaging you see frequently these days. McNamara was Grady Little times 3. I had the good fortune to vent about McNamara later with a HOF pitcher who had him as a manager. He did not disagree.
  18. Wakefield will be gone. Period. They got him his 200 wins--at some sacrifice. So be it.
  19. Here's a better question: Name the starting lineup for opening day next season. Abraham writes Middlebrooke is tearing up the Arizona Instructional league. Could be the starting 3rd baseman next year. God knows they have to get younger and get rid of the deadwood. That could mean Tek and Ortiz replaced by Lavarnway and Youks. I think that kid at SS will stick, too, though he might not start until mid-season. The next team is going to run the bases like hell, and play better fundamentals. Or Henry will be run out of town.
  20. Well, they beat the Jets. But they aren't worth crap until they beat them in the playoffs.
  21. Nice pics, thanks. I was never a Braves fan--always the Red Sox. Never went to Braves field until 1960, when I was at the first AFL game between the Patriots and the Denver Broncos--won by the Broncos 14-10. By then, it was Nickerson Field--owned by BU, but used by the Boston Patriots. The Red Sox lost a playoff game in '48 to Cleveland to decide the AL pennant (I was at that game in Fenway with my dad, but can't remember), or else it would have been a Braves-Red Sox World Series. The Braves got very good very fast when they moved to Milwaukee, largely because of players in their farm system when they were in Boston.
  22. The word that best describes the Red Sox the last few years is the word that best describes their manager: CASUAL
  23. Did I hit the nail on the head about Epstein already being interviewed in private? My favorite song, by the way, is "Witchcraft".
