  1. Fielder has no chance here. They have to turn that lineup around and remember what park they are playing in.You can bet Epstein took the heat for signing a LHd lineup last year. I doubt Tito was thrilled. That means Middlebrook 3B, Youks 3B/DH, Cuddyer DH/RF--maybe platooned with Kalish. It means by by Papi. You can also look at this thing another way: it was the pitching, stupid. Actually, it was. Leave the lineup alone and fix up the pitching. That means Lackey gone, Wake gone. Sign another FA starter to go with Beckett, Lester and Buchholz. Keep Pap or sign a Bell or Madsen. Bard can start or setup. Get more innings out of the starters instead of 100 pitches and out. Less bullpen.
  2. In school, that gets him a grade of C.
  3. You mean somebody who posts regularly in Red Sox chatgroups?
  4. What got Epstein into trouble was his free spending the last two years--on free agents that didn't pan out. He wasted a lot of money playing moneyball. And his free agent track record before that sucked, too. He was overrated because they won two Championships only partly his doing.
  5. The Yanks have crashed and burned before, too. In fact, not getting beyond the 1st round in the playoffs amounts to that for them--EVERY year. With their $200 million dollar team. The difference is Steinbrenner has a quick hook. The NY media is used to people getting fired by a Steinbrenner. In contrast, Henry is a procrastinator. The roof has to fall in on his head before he takes any action. Maybe that's what happened to him on his yacht. LOL
  6. Cherington is a Duquette guy. He was hired by Duquette. I think I posted this elsewhere. I hope he has better luck with the media than Duquette did. Dan's sin was he didn't give Gammons the Manny Ramirez' signing story. That killed him at the Globe. Cherington has some brains--Amherst grad like Duquette. Also played baseball there. Knows his cyberstats and player development. He has to play ball with the media (that's important to the Sox management), get a manager who can straighten out Crawford and get rid of the deadwood. He also has to control his tempation to play the Yankee moneyball game with that big supply of cash this fan-spoiled franchise generates every year. They need better player development and lower ticket prices.
  7. Actually, Cherington was hired by Duquette. They both went to Amherst. Duquette was an underrated GM--by the media. He didn't get along with Gammons et al. It was his players, mainly, and his farm system that won in 04. Gammons was always pissed that Duquette didn't give him the story on the Manny Ramirez signing. Epstein is getting credit in the media for everything, now that he's in Chicago--they are even saying he traded for Beckett and Lowell to win in 07. Heard that on mlb.com last night. You could say Epstein was an overrated GM.
  8. I hope Papi is talking his way out of Boston. He has been behaving like a prima donna lately. Somehow, this year he was able to reverse his decline of the past few years. At age 36, I doubt he can do it again. It looked like the typical contract year to me. Papi is a one-dimensional player--he can't play a position. That decreases his value-- a failure of Epstein to take this into account. Roster space is very limited these days, so the DH should be a position player, in my view, or else team depth suffers. Vmart would look better on this club right now instead of Papi. And they should sign Cuddyer to replace Papi and platoon in the outfield.
  9. I say nuts to trading Beckett. He was their best pitcher last year--and had a good year. He was one of those who looked like he got in shape in spring training. Maybe he does have a conditioning/dedication problem. That might explain his on-off years. But that's really a management problem. The team is supposed to keep these guys in line. They are being payed a king's ransom to play a kid's game. No, they can't trade Beckett. No 1 starters do not grow on trees. Besides, he's a helluva good competitor when he wants to be. Look at his World Series record. You don't trade guys like that--he isn't replaceable.
  10. Bingo. Prior to the meeting with Francona, the Globe line was pure status quo. No changes needed. After Francona was let go, the Globe changed 180 degrees, calling for Epstein to leave and publishing all kinds of stuff about the players lack of conditioning, clubhouse excesses, Francona's "personal problems", etc. Clearly, the media knew what the score was with this club long before the September collapse. And didn't say a word. A lot of what Abraham and Mazz have said lately about the state of the team corroborates the observations of the more perceptive posters in different chatgroups through the season. The lack of winning intensity, reflected in the manager, and the lack of conditioning. And the babying of the starters at the expense of the bullpen.
  11. I don't buy this "Tito as a victim" business. Francona knew what was going on. If he wasn't being listened to, he should have gone upstairs. He's accountable for the players conduct on the field and in the clubhouse. My guess is the FO also knew what the score was. They are also accountable. Henry? The guy seems a bit detached--with his yacht and his hedge funds. Maybe he just lost interest after a couple of championships. Maybe they all lost interest in winning. Just milking the fanbase for operating income. Werner? I've never seen a picture of him. The whole organization is responsible for the demise. Tito and Theo didn't just walk away--they were given a good hard push--by Werner and Henry.
  12. Getting tired of the "beer in the clubhouse" media routine. It's like, not uncommon. You can just imagine what those "post-game spreads" are like. Lavish is the word. After all, everybody's a multi-millionaire. There comes a point when too much money interferes with competitiveness in sports. The Red Sox are a prime example. I said a year ago this club was reminding me of the soft Yawkey days. It looks like Henry has become Mr Softee Yawkey.
  13. Chad Finn's predictions don't include Wilson. They do include Cuddyer. I'll buy that, but that makes Papi expendable if Kalish plays RF. And Finn has them keeping Ortiz, which would be a mistake if they sign Cuddyer. I would keep Youkilis, and restore some RHd power in the lineup. Youks is an excellent hitter when he's healthy. Beware of all this media negativity about Youks. He's not one of the bad apples they need to unload. He and Pedey are the core of the Red Sox when they're healthy.
  14. I'll buy that. I also think Dave Martinez will be the next manager. He's the guy who can turn Crawford around. And don't think that isn't a $140 million priority. P.S. I remember when Pumpsie came up. First black player. 2nd baseman. Didn't last long. Not exactly Willie Mays, who they could have had in the 40s.
  15. It's not only a possibility, it's a matter of policy. They do what it takes. Expect them to sign at least one lefty FA starter named Wilson.
  16. nah. staying in St Louis--if he's smart. The playoffs are OK, but the top team in each league needs a first round bye. They wind up playing the wild card team--often a very hot team in September-- a disadvantage. Right now, the Cardinals are the hot team. Having the Phillies and Yankees lose to the hot wild card team in the 1st round was not great.
  17. We'll see if Henry has the balls to get rid of the deadwood. So far, so good. He has gotten rid of Tito and Theo. Now get rid of the coaching staff.
  18. I think Crawford has to lead off next year. Pedey 2nd, Ellsbury 3rd. Having Crawford lead off will improve his walk percentage (he'll be trying to get on base), utilize his speed and restore his confidence. Ells has made himself into a no.3 hitter. Pedey is Pedey.
  19. Henry could care less about the losses. He has turned over more in advertising and ticket revenue. But there is a point of diminishing returns if they continue to miss the playoffs. That's why Tito and Theo are gone.
  20. Epstein has the kind of track record any half decent GM would have with $160 million to spend. He will have the same track record in Chicago with the same money. He will win some, he will lose some. Will he win any Championships? If he stays long enough and gets lucky--with a team that peaks in September for the playoffs. The same holds true for the GM who succeeds him in Boston.
