  1. Maybe he shouldn't have gone 4 innings, then? Don't think so.
  2. Hard to believe the Sox are in need of a blood transfusion so early. They have an infield in Pawtucket that probably could hold their own in Boston right now. At least the left side. These guys are accustomed to sucking in April. Maybe they'll come around.
  3. I'm not sure that picking the closer is a FO decision. Managers usually have a big say in who plays where. But you never know with the present Red Sox. V won't last the season if his hands are tied.
  4. Are you sure this bullpen was put together by "LL and his hand picked manager"? A lot of people have the impression it was put together by the front office.
  5. Reminds me of the movie "Bull Durham." "Baseball is a simple game. You throw the ball. You hit the ball. You catch the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains."
  6. Bobby has to get permission from Ben.
  7. Padilla threw 4 shutout innings yesterday on 51 pitches. What was to prevent him from going out for the 9th with a lead? And getting the win? What prevented him was the mindset of using a closer in a save situation, and Bobby Vs premature pronouncement that Aceves was the closer. He threw a guy in there who had pitched the day before instead of leaving in the dominant guy. Padilla gets into trouble in the 9th--then you take him out. The difference between a great manager and the run of the mill type is having the balls to go against the grain. Bobby missed the opportunity yesterday. I see the Globe has trotted out its staff this aft to rebuke Cafardo again on Bard closing. It's poll shows 80% think Bard should close at this point. The readers agree with Cafardo.
  8. Cheer up. The Yankees just lost their first 3, too. Somebody tell the media. The Globe poll, by the way, has about 80% who think Bard should be the closer. As soon as Bailey went down, Bard should have become the closer. That tells you something about the Red Sox management. If you are going to make the closer important, you better have your best closing.
  9. Trouble is we're not sure who put together this team. We're told the manager wanted Bard to close, Iglesias playing SS and Lavarnway on the bench. That hasn't happened. Re Epstein, executives have a way of s***ing the bed here, and landing on their feet there.
  10. Tough call. Bobby is better off trying different guys for starters than having closers blow games. He needs a reliable closer who can preserve a win. I suspect Aceves isn't happy with his situation--from his quotes. He got put on the spot back to back in Detroit--in a role he is is not used to.
  11. Great quotes by Aceves. He tells it like it is. The Yankees lose three in a row and it's not news. These guys are pros. The pitching sucked in Detroit, and they have to make the right adjustments.
  12. They probably can't pitch Padilla tommorrow, since he threw 4 innings today. The smart thing would have been to let Padilla close out the game. But Bobby did what most managers would do these days--change pitchers in a closing situation. That turned out to be the wrong thing to do. Don't try to fix what ain't broke. Happens all the time. They always seem to get into situations where they overuse Aceves. And they get burned for it. Right now, it looks like Padilla has to start and Bard has to close. They have to nail down the closing role right now or you can kiss the playoffs goodbye.
  13. Logic says Bard now closes. Especially now that Bobby knows he doesn't have a closer. That was proven this weekend. Ask yourself who would be closing if they hadn't traded for Bailey? That's pretty much the situation they are in right now.
  14. Cheer up. The Yankees just got shut out by Hellickson. Swept 3 by the Rays. That should keep the media quiet.
  15. The front office needs to face reality. They wanted Bard to start. But now the closer is gone for half a year, and they have to change their plans. Bard has to close. It's really that simple. That's the priority. Unless, of course they are waiting for Bobby to use Melancon as closer. You set up the closer as being important--you better have a good one to fill the role.
  16. If you are going to make a big deal out of one guy as a closer--putting him in key spots all the time--he better be a guy who is dependable to pitch in back to back days. Bailey has really screwed them, because now they don't have that guy. They put Aceves in back to back, and he doesn't do it. The better option is to go with the guy who has pitched 4 good innings--if he isn't tired. But managers knee jerk to the "closer" these days. Trouble is, the Sox don't have one. They are just throwing darts at a board right now.
  17. Beckett says his thumb was OK yesterday. He said he just threw too many strikes down the middle of the plate. Now, how did that happen? Why didn't he throw some off speed stuff the first three batters? I saw all straight fastballs. No curves until the 4th batter. A case of just bad pitch selection. I thought he wasted a lot of time with the baserunner and got distracted. Inexcusable for a veteran pitcher. He lost his concentration, and threw a few meatballs. That has happened before with him. He does lose concentration at times and grooves it.
  18. Sweeney for Reddick looks like an even swap. Bailey must have been a salary dump or damaged goods.
  19. Dombrowski looking smug upstairs decked out in sports clothes. It won't be this easy, Dan.
  20. Sweeney just misses a double down the line. Gets a hit. Nice player. Should hit for power for his size.
  21. REAL baseball fans have learned to turn the sound off watching TV games.
  22. These guys weren't prepared to watch Beckett throw batting practice today, but Bobby needs to get a better effort out of them next time. Oooh. Pedey just makes a phenomenal pivot to complete a DP. Now why the hell couldn't I do that in my prime. LOL
  23. There's a lefty name Thomas pitching. Where the hell did he come from? oh my. The Tigers are even getting lucky on bleeders.
  24. Beckett set the tone on this one. A much poorer performance than yesterday. Plenty of fodder for the hungry media.
  25. Bad throw by Salty. Easy DP blown.
