  1. Let's keep in mind that the Sox had a big management shakeup in the offseason and a conflict about whether the new GM should pick the manager. Plus Henry turned off the money. It was a difficult situation for the FO, but Cherington exascerbated the problem by trading for a closer (Bailey) instead of a starter (Gio G.) because he had a bug up his ass wanting to start Bard. That has blown up in his face on two counts. He also had another bug about Iglesias and Lav needing more "experience". I think he was wrong there, too. Too bad V didn't have more of a say on the matter, but that was Henry/Lucchino's fault. As for Jackie whatnot, that was a dagger effort designed to get her promoted--maybe. Youks did not get a fair shake there. His opinions are probably shared by a few other players. It's a good argument for keeping women out of the clubhouse.
  2. why so many SBs off Lester? A LHP should be holding ROB.
  3. Aceves is beginning to look like a guy who was Peter Principled to closer. Not enough there to begin with.
  4. The trades looked OK at the start, but haven't turned out OK. The management on this team right now is in disarray--from Henry on down. They brought it on themselves.
  5. Regarding Ortiz, he's in the same boat as other players who got a hot start. At this point they correct a bit before regaining their form mid-season. I doubt it means anything more than that. He's still swinging well.
  6. Gio is the guy they should have gotten--not Bailey. The less risky way to go. Instead they took a chance moving Bard to starter--he was a surer bet to close. They might turn it around when CC and Ells come back, but they still have a logjam at 3B and too many 4A players starting. If Baltimore and Toronto don't collapse, they'll be fighting to stay out of the cellar--much less the playoffs.
  7. You have to point to the front office for the Red Sox demise. They went to a different type of manager, but that hasn't changed anything. It's evident the front office is pulling the strings--mostly the wrong strings.
  8. "Delusion" reared it's ugly head when Youks was moved from 1B to 3B. He simply couldn't handle the transition physically, and nobody in the front office wants to admit it. As a first baseman, he was an all-star--one of the best all-around in the big leagues for several years.
  9. Yeah--Selig is pretty strong about this. Baseball has a problem in that Afro-American kids prefer football and basketball. I agree, though, that it's only one factor in DMac's case. Plus he's had some big hits the last few years--a likeable guy.
  10. Ross and Sweeney are keepers. Nava has to hit .300 to stay. Then you have Crawford and Ellsbury. The wild cards are DMac and Pods. Pods age counts against him. DMac has been around awhile and has had some big hits. In addition, race is a positive factor for him (Selig is pushing for more black presence in baseball). It's a tough call. Nava will have to hit like hell to stick. Plus they don't have to do anything until CC and Ells come back--probably after the all-star break. They can carry DMac, Pods and Nava until then. Then 2 of the 3 will have to go.
  11. Who the heck is Bard's agent? He should be pointing him to his bread and butter--setting up as a prelude to closing. The kid has potential as a stud closer who can make big bucks. Wake up, Mr Agent.
  12. Buchholz is a key starter. He tips the fulcrum--being #3. He pitches well, they do well, because Beckett and Lester are 1-2 and normally reliable (except Lester sucks right now). Still, Buchholz is key. Doubront has been making up for Lester. You got to have 3 reliable pitchers going at any time.
  13. Are these guys overpaid--and pampered? The Yankees make too much money, too, but they aren't pampered. They know Steinbrenner will kick them in the ass if they don't produce.
  14. V has too many outfielders right now, and he is shuffling a lot of guys around out there. Sitting a hot hitter like Nava down is pretty ridiculous.
  15. He might well fall off the cliff again, due to fatigue. Which is why I'd like to see Lav up catching some games. They could be the best 1-2 catcher combo in baseball.
  16. Nava seems to be breaking out, as Reddick did the first half last year. Reddick cooled off the 2nd half, but he's hitting well so far in Oakland--their best hitter. You can't give up on these guys too soon. They need to stick with Nava to see where he goes.
  17. BABIP--just for batted balls in play. Everything else is factored out. I would assume errors as well.
  18. You won't remember when Ike was asked what Nixon had done as VP. He said if you give me a week I might think of something. You could say the same for Henry, Lucchino and the front office the past few years.
  19. He's been picking up Gonzo's paycheck lately, but it's still early.
  20. Pawtucket has the best record in AAA right now. That's probably why McDonald is with the Sox. He isn't needed in Pawtucket.
